Justia makes a good point. Frankly, I would have thought people in some quarters would have learned something from Iraq. Yes, what is happening in Syria is terrible. What makes us think we can charge in their and make it better? Recent experience would indicate we have a better chance of making it worse than it already is.

Memorial Day.... still struggling with the idea of war and support
by Butterflyleia85 inso i do respect and am very greatful for the sacrifies those who dedicated their family, lives, etc.
to defend our freedom, lives, and land, but if we lived in a world where we lived as monks or jehovah's witnesses (basicly just the practise of no war).... would that be wrong?.
what's a good lesson or level of reasoning when supporting the idea of war?.

I do remember the Alamo. There have been some great movies about it. Unfortunately they all ignore the fact that the people defending the Alamo were foreign invaders. Texas was Mexican territory, Americans had no right to the place.

Heathen, you said:
In just about every case the US has gone to war under false pretense .
If we took Texas (plus Arizona, New Mexico and California) from the Mexicans under false pretenses we need to give it back to them.

So Heathen, should we give Texas back to Mexico? I'm sure you'll love living in the conditions prevalent just over the border.

Birthdays and hunting
by exwhyzee insupposedly the reason jw's claim that celebrating birthdays is displeasing to god is because the bible mentions a pagan birthday celebation where john the baptist was beheaded.
if that's reason enough to ban birthday celebrations forever, then i'm suprised they didn't ban hunting since pagan nimrod was named in the bible as a hunter in opposition to jehovah who hunted for sport.
most hunters i know enjoy the meat they bring home of course, but mostly they hunt because they simply love to do it.

My first congregation was in Pullman, Washington; a small college town in Eastern Washington. A few of us hunted, and were whispered about by the rest of the congregation for doing so. One of the guys I hunted with was an elder, I think the rest of the BOE wanted to go after us, but couldn't find anything to support their position.

Putting my old HR hat back on for a minute here.
It MIGHT (note emphasis) be useful if you put it in terms of what you did. DO NOT mention the title or the religion. I'm thinking something like "volunteered to run a literature counter at my church, responsible for distribution of material, inventory of items on hand, accounting for funds due from church members" or something like that. Don't put more than about one line on the resume.
Volunteer work looks good on a resume, provided you were doing something that resembles a real job. It tells potential employers that you think of yourself as part of a community and shows (hopefully) some ability to self-start and direct your own work.
Good luck with the job search.

my evangelical christian co-worker is extremely "racist" towards Hispanics
by booker-t ini am getting so tired of my co-worker who is a "evangelical christian" constantly making racist slurs towards hispanic people.
i just don't get it and it is making me very uncomfortable because i wonder what he says about "black" people behind my back.
everyday he makes comments such as "mexicans" are dumb and stupid, "mexicans all can't speak good english", "mexicans have 50 million babies" and "mexicans are all on welfare".

You're right, its not the issue. I don't think it should have been brought up. Would these kind of comment be OK if he was an atheist?
