Good for you E-man. I think I might give it a try myself the next time opportunity arises.

A Gentle Stir Or Shake 'Em Rigid?
by Englishman injust lately i seem to be encountering the occasional jw partaking of a bevvy or two in my local pub.
so, i was wondering, what would i do if a dub came in for a pint of lunch and then, after noticing me, activated his implanted shun-the-apostate chip?
actually, i know exactly what i would do, i would tell him to eff off and use a different pub.. so it was, that on tuesday night, around about 9.

Synopses of the Danni issue
by seven006 infor those who would like a synopses of this issue for what ever reason, i would like to try and put as many of the confusing pieces together as i can.
why they chose to do it at a kingdom hall is understandable.
mark made his post and revealed a few facts in this issue that were suppressed by the gag order.

Thank you. That cleared up a lot for me.
Generally until I have reason to believe otherwise, I take people at face value.

Where were you when you first came here?
by Xena ini noticed in a couple of threads people discussing the impact this board would have on jw's with doubts coming here and reading the messages.
it got me to wondering where most people that post here were at...what stage in their jw/ex jw process...when they started reading and/or posting here.
also curious, when you did come here what was your main focus?

I've been out since 1989. I first came here just to yak at people with a shared background. If this thing had existed when I was feeling my way out of the Borg, I would have reached Jedi in about a week.

Okay Fess Up: What's Your Handle Mean?
by Mindchild inokay fess up: whats your handle mean?.
my handle: mindchild comes from computer scientist and futurist dr. hans moravec: who wrote the book, the future of robot and human intelligence which is a book about when we will be able to construct machines capable of human intelligence and raises the possibility of uploading ourselves (every thought we ever had) into an android body much superior to the human ones we have now.
i entertain the hope that not only will i live long enough to see this happen, i will transfer myself (the complete essence of what is me) into a body of my own choosing and become immortal if i so choose.

ransom sacrifice question
by DIM inlast night in a very very heated conversation with my mother, i explained to her that the wts teaches that the great crowd (non annointed) only feel the affects of the ransom sacrifice but that jesus died for the annointed or something along those lines.
she didn't believe me (she's been a witness for 22 years) and i have no idea where this is explained in the old watchtowers or whatever.
any help would be appreciated!

Dim, here are a couple of relevant quotes I pulled up quickly. They were in our letter when we left. I will try to pull my bound volumes and get more of the context for you. I believe these were both in QFR's asking about Jesus mediatorship for the non annoited.
“So in this strict Biblical sense Jesus is the mediator only for anointed Christians…The ‘great crowd’ of ‘other sheep’ that is forming today is not in that new covenant. However by associating with the ‘little flock’ of those yet in that covenant they come under the benefits that flow from that new covenant.” WT 4/1/79
“They recognize that they are not spiritual Israelites in the new covenant mediated by Jesus Christ.” WT 11/15/79

The King of the North was Abraham Lincoln. The King of the South was Jefferson Davis. 137 years ago the North won.
Get over it.

I Attended a Christian Convention last weekend
by Prisca inwhen i was a jw (born and raised), i was lead to believe that the clergy class of christendom was some elite class who ruled over the meek and mild sheep of the congregation; that they wore fancy robes to do their services in, and generally were every bad thing the wts told me they would be.. they lied.. i attended a christian convention just this last weekend.
it was a non-denominational one, meaning you didn't have to be of a certain faith to attend, neither were some of the speakers who participated.
however, the organisers were from the anglican (church of england) religion so the communion on sunday was conducted according to anglican tradition, but i'll get to that later.. one of the things that hit me first was that you were allowed to wear what you liked.

Going somewhere else is indeed an eye opener. My wife and I have been attending an independent Christian church ever since we got. Early on we went to a retreat for married couples and had a wonderful time. About three years ago I spent a weekend at a men's retreat and it was very much like what you described.
My wife has been going to the women't retreat every year for ten years and won't miss it for anything. All of these events are open to anybody who wants to show up. The most interesting thing is realizing that you don't have to believe every single word that gets said, in fact I've heard speakers contradict each other, then tell us we have to decide what to think! Boy I'd like to see that at the KH.

Wow, great letter.
My wife and I disassociated ourselves in 1989, via a very long letter detailing our belief that the Watchtower is a blind guide.
The question you have to ask yourself is: "Can I live with the consequences?" If you have family or friends in "the truth" this letter will end all contact with them. If you aren't going to be leaving anybody important behind, or can live without contact with them, mail the letter. For us it came down to putting a spiritual relationship with God ahead of all others.
For the record we haven't ever regretted the decision.
