I'm about 2/3 of the way through it. I'll put up a longer post when I'm done. Its a good read. She uses nonlinear narrative, and unusual formatting, which enhances the story. It may qualify as literary fiction.

North Korea has better writers. A sample:
"However, despicable human scum Jang, who was worse than a dog, perpetrated thrice-cursed acts of treachery in betrayal of such profound trust and warmest paternal love shown by the party and the leader for him."
That's from the official annoncement. http://www.northkoreatech.org/2013/12/13/full-text-of-kcna-announcement-on-execution-of-jang/

I've changed my mind about this particular case, after rereading what happened. If they want to call themselves soldiers and be treated like soliders then fine by me. They were in a civilian area and out of uniform. The people that arrested them should have stood them against the nearest solid wall and shot them.

Have JWs and other Christians completely missed the point of Matthew 24:4-8?
by Island Man inmany people think those verses are suggesting that the wars, earthquakes, food shortages, etc are all a sign that the end is imminent.
however, a careful examination of the context seems to suggest that jesus was actually forewarning his followers not to draw such a conclusion from such events.
see this interesting article on the subject:.

There is a Bible translation called "The Message" which really captures this aspect of Jesus' comments. It also emphasizes his point not to go following anybody that claims to be the Messiah or His messenger. This translation makes it clear that ANY such claim will be false.

Christmas presents--"We get things all year"??
by WTWizard ini have heard that line of rubbish more times from the platform, especially around this time of year.
yet, given the number of children with few or no toys, about 90% of the time, they get little or nothing year round.
sometimes it is because of poverty, often induced because the parents are supposed to cut back on their work and pious-sneer or donate excessive amounts to the worldwide pedophile defense fund (or both).

We were bad witnesses. We bought lots of stuff for our kids, although I think we part of a fairly "liberal" congregation. We always made a big deal of exchanging presents on our anniversary. As soon as they got old enough to figure out when it was coming up the children started getting excited, much like Christmas. It was a fun family tradition. And we always hit the after Christmas sales so that when school started up again so that our kids could say that got something new and leave it at that.
If we'd lived somewhere else I wonder if we would have been disfellowshipped for giving our son Star Wars minitures and our daughter Strawberry Shortcake stuff.
Stand for Pure Worship, JW's aren't the only ones who give oddball high school graduation presents. The other day I read something from a college student talking about his graduation gifts. One of the comments was "What am I supposed to do with a Cross pen desk set?"

Let's Talk About Sex
by cofty ina old thread was bumped recently in which posters from 9 years ago raised objections to evolution basesd on personal incredulity regarding sexual reproduction.. i remember an elder in one of my old congregations saying something to the effect that "how could evolution be true, if men evolved before women...blah blah" you get the picture.. i have refreshed my memory of a chapter in nick lane's excellent book "life arising - the ten greatest inventions of evolution" and put together a summary.
it would be great if others would add to it - cantleave, adam, tiktaalik, s&r, bohm et al?.
here is my starter focusing on the problem with non-sexual selection.... if the driving force in evolution is the struggle of selfish genes to pass on copies of themselves to future generations, then sex seems counter-productive.

Number of anointed partakers in new yearbook?
by JWOP ini haven't seen the 2014 yearbook on the jw site yet.
i'm looking to see if the number of partakers has increased again (as it has for many years now).
anyone have a scan of it yet?.

My money is on a directive from the GB stating that all persons wanting to call themselves "anointed" will have to receive permission from the GB. They already approve other appointments, why not this one. Although that would raise other complications for them - they would not be able to claim they don't know who's annointed if somebody sues the "anointed".

HALF AND HALF or 50/50
by Terry inthere are only a thousand people left on earth.. about ten percent of the survivors (of some unnamed disaster) have professional expertise of some kind.. 80 per cent have some education, but not any practical grasp of how things operate.. 10 per cent are extremists of varying kinds; a sort of lunatic fringe with knee-jerk "solutions" they propose to carry out.. a temporary leader/spokesman acts as a referee to sort things out.. a meeting is conducted with all 1000 present.. after much arguing, a vote is conducted.. 51 % want to carry out one set of plans while 49% want know part of it.. the thin majority start doing things their way and the minority get more and more outraged.. what happens next?.

A friend of mine gave that speech at a college rally in 1969. I think he became a stock broker.
