I've lived at my current location (condo in the suburbs) for seven years. I've never talked to them at the door, somebody left a tract in the door four or five years ago, I can't remember if it was JW's, Mormons, or somebody else.

by MsShockJock injust wondering if they still go door-to-door?
i never see groups of people walking around the neighborhoods all dressed up or out in fastfood restaurants on saturday mornings or groups of people driving around in cars.

The Time Is Coming For Progressive Governments To Make Laws Against Oppressive Cults To Protect It's Citizens, Making Lawsuits More Plentiful Against Them

Band - Do you think requiring financial transparency would meet Constitutional muster? I would like to think so, but I don't know all the nuances of the 1st Amendment. I don't think it would be unduly burdensome to require non-profits (including, but not limited to churches) to publish their financial statements, and if gross receipts are above a certain amount the statements would have to be audited. At least people would have a better understanding of where their money is going.

The trouble is, you can't pass a law requiring (for example) parents and children to like each other, or friends to remain friends forever. If my friend decides to become a JW or a Mormon or joins an MLM, I may well decide I don't want to let him in my house anymore. Should he be able to sue me because I don't want to listen to his sales pitch?

Sadly inevitable...JWs glad that Robin Williams died on "this side" of Armageddon

Somehow I don't think Robin William's brand of humor will be welcome in a place run by JW's. For a good example google "Robin Williams on Viagra and oral sex," but don't do it at work.

The Watchtower Corporation has paid off CNN...

JW's think they are the culmination of all human history and that the grand divine plan centers on them. After spending years inside this enormous echo chamber where that message is repeated endlessly, it is hard to adjust to the idea that the average non-witness thinks about Witnesses only when they bang on the door or set up shop in some public place. Most of the time that never think about JW's at all. No one watching this show cares about the religous aspect, they care a lot about catching pedophiles and Walsh's story correctly focused on that.

Just Curious About Something
by EmptyInside insorry, couldn't think of a better title for this post, without it being long.. i was thinking this morning,if ex-jws, who were born into the group less likely to join another religion after leaving.
vs. the witnesses who belonged to a church before joining the religion.. from my own prespective, being raised a witness,i have no intention of joining any religion.
and it seems that born-ins are less likely to join a religion after leaving the cult.. in my own experience,i think it's religious burn-out to tell the truth.

I tinkered with a number of religions before becoming an unchurched Christian in 1972 (was 21). I started studying with JW's about a year later and was baptized in 1973. My wife's story is similar, although she had a firmer background with main stream churches. When we left in 1989 we joined an independent church which we attended (and my wife worked there) until 2009. After a fracas over her job, we left and have not been back to any church since. I'm still a Christian, but feel no need to adhere to, or attend, any particular church.

Why Are People Anti-Semitic?

Some people hate Jews.
Some people conflate disagreement with Israel with hatred of Jews.
Some people hate blacks.
Some people conflate disagreement with current President's policies with racism.
It's all part of an unwellingness to see individuals and engage individuals instead of groups. I think our current identity politics in the US, as practiced by all parties, contributes to the problem. I can't put my hands on the exact quote (it was in a library book I read recently) in a letter to his wife just before the civil war William Tecumseh Sherman complained about newspaper reporters inflaming local opinions and whipping up a frenzy to the point where no one could talk about the situation rationally.
