  Have your JW Relatives Explained about Generation/Overlap Change to You ?

  after reading on the way out's thread about his mom explaining the generation overlap to him it kicked this idea into my head to make this thread .

  i thought it would be helpful to see if anybody here has had jw relatives or friends try to explain this " generation overlap " theory to you as a faded or inactive witness and what happened in the conversations.

  so please feel free to post your experiences.

  on my visit to Bethel last week, someone who has regular contact with the GB explained it to me and stated that the FDS was being careful not to be date setters, because that get's them into trouble. But that there was a need to clarify the meaning of "generation" and that it referred to a group of people who shared an experience and that it did NOT infer an unending period of time.

  I mentioned to him that that it was not clear from reading the snippet in the magazine that that is what they were implying and that it seemed like the comment was sort of plopped in the middle of an unrelated article. He did not comment on that.

  I told him that the subject of the generation is so deep, it would be nice to have more in depth coverage of the subject so that we could all understand the FDS' reasoning for the new understanding.

  It was clear to me from my visit, that they do sincerely believe they are carrying out God's work and that there is no malice - at least in this man - ... I think they are a very imperfect set of men.

  My jury is still out about whether they are really God's Channel.

  I've always loved the line, "Reading the Awake is just like getting a college degree." Yeah, right.

  The information contained is so superficial - Witnesses do not have any social or cultural context for what they observe. If I do bring up those types of concepts, I get doe eyed stares and the sound of crickets....

  They have nothing to add to a conversation about those types of issues unless they have indeed gone to college and experienced a wider world. It would be nice if there was real discussion about real subjects within the congregation. But there is none. The one thing I do appreciate about the Catholics is their view on social justice. At least someone's got that right.

  It was all I could do to hold back and not roll my eyes or burst out laughing. Seriously? Most JWs I know are brain dead and couldn't think their way out of a paper bag.

  from what i've noticed 'wordly' teens or very young adults won't follow jw's.most teens/young jw's are born in,so boasting about the theocratic youth is actually boasting about jw children lol..

  I have to agree. I was baptized at 16, under peer pressure. If I had to do it over, I'd stall until I was moved out of the house. I'd say a fair amount of any emotional issues I've had in my life are due to this feeling of being trapped into something I'm not totally convinced of. I've always wondered what was wrong with me. Now I know, there is nothing wrong with me, it was just a decsion made by a child. Now, however, I have to live with the consequences.

  Is it true I knew what I was getting myself into? Yes. But, was it out of my deep love of God? No. Therefore, I would consider my baptism invalid even though the Organization does not recognize this sort of situation.

  How common is swinging among JWs?

  my wife and i recently heard about two couples we know who switched partners in the past.

  we then got to talking about a different couple we ate dinner with a while back who i thought gave off the vibe of wanting to swing.

  my wife said she got that vibe too... thus the question: how common is this in wt-land?.

  @Prov 1320: AMEN - I would love an invite. :-) I'm single now, so I can swing to my heart's content.

  I had a similar question - if this kind of thing becomes known, how far do the elders let it go before it becomes actionable? I can see letting a kiss go - but how about several? or how much touching is allowed before it falls into the grey abyss of "loose conduct"?

  Last year or the year before in OREGON (ORE - E - GONE) there 3 or more young couples who got caught - several were df'd but not all. Swingin' is still alive and, well, swingin'.

  in julie & julia, ms. child's collaborator says it doesn't matter; julia says it does matter.

  i can see its being important when writing a book but how about when cooking up daily fare?.

  I think the point of Child's comment was that since they were writing a cook book presumably for people who couldn't cook, they needed to measure so the receipe was consistent and turned out the way they intended. If I am learning a new technique, or a new receipe, I measure. Once I understand the basic idea of a receipe, I don't. I fundamentally don't ever measure when I cook. I think people who are natural cooks work based on principals of cooking and flavor rather than measurements.

  How would the diehard witnesses view this ?

  this video was sent to me earlier today, and it really hit a nerve with me,,,,, i just couldn't stop applying it to the witness belief of df and da.. i've known quite a few witness parents over the years who just left their kids "on the roadside" because they no longer.

  wanted to be a part of this religion.. why is it that genuine human reaction/emotion is dropped when children no longer want to be a jw ?.

  this father seems to be quite a guy, notice how he yells at the security/medical person near the end no doubt to leave his son alone !.

  Conscious Class vs. Fading...

  as i have stated a number of times - i'm really struggling.

  i would like more than anything just to fade away and life my life.

  however, i am not willing to give up my family, specifically my nephew who needs me to stick around.
