In a land so broad and spacious
Free from strife and things vexatious
See a happy crowd vivacious

Disasterous lyrics
we all know that skilled songwriters the brothers are not, so what are your most hated kingdom songs?
the ones that made you cringe when you saw them listed on the km or watchtower?
mine?.
In a land so broad and spacious
Free from strife and things vexatious
See a happy crowd vivacious
in Gods service that is efficatious
Disasterous lyrics
my name is michelle and from the age of 3 i was brought up one of jw.
my parents became witnesses whilst in germany when my father was stationed there with the british army.
we then came back to england where i lived in darwen, lancashire, and attended darwen, bolton and blackburn congregations over the next 18 years.
Michelle thank you for posting and sharing these events. The trouble with JWs in this situation is that they seperate their own wrongdoing from that of people they are punishing through shunning. I have found it is often the people with the most to hide themselves that are harshest in applying the shunning rule.
In your case you are right to be angry, your father's behaviour was disturbing and predatory to his own child and to others. Your mother chose to support your father rather than protect her child. Both your parents betrayed you and both your parents showed a lack of compassion towards you. Their shunning whilst painful has protected your own children from contact with your father who cannot be trusted to behave appropriately and from your mother who would not have protected them. However that being said if you need closure then write them the letter and lay out how you feel and how their behaviour in the past was an act of betrayal. Leave it for a couple of days before posting and then read it again, if you are still feeling the same way then post it.
You are a strong woman who has had tremendous courage and determination not to repeat the mistakes your parents made your children are lucky to have you.
she looks dreadful and the tan isn't even either. How much money has she spent to look so awful. This woman needs help not more tan.
this is one that i've been struggling with since i started hanging out here.
when you get on a thread and quote a scripture with a comment to make a point, the believers who have never been jw's often knee jerk reaction jump all over it, and in essensce say that you cannot understand the passage because you are not a believer like them.. it's as if they are saying what is written and what you have learned about certain passages are automatically wrong just because you were taught from a jw perspective, or that you lack basic reading comprehension.
i agree many of the jw teachings are off, but i can certainly respect more of their interpretations of scriptures than i can of other christian denominations.
I think that the bible is often misused. It is difficult to remember that the bible was written many thousands of years ago. Ideas and accepted practices that were common knowledge then are a mystery to a modern day reader. We take the bible out of the time in which it was written and try to apply modern mentalities and concepts to ancient civilisations and people.
Academics will admit to gaps in knowledge because they are interested in facts and proof these things don't concern believers as much who are more focused on what is said. However I find jw interpretation of scripture very convoluted especially when they do verse by verse interpretations. Their insistence on dual fulfilments including modern day fulfilments can be extremely dubious with very minor events being included.
I find it refreshing when someone admits to ignorance and also more compelling this indicates their interest in truth not propaganda.
i got a text from my mom when i got into work today saying that a brother i've known for a while had died.
he was a bethelite and they found him dead in his room.
he was the same age as me.
So sorry, at 23 he had hardly begun his life. Poor boy.
my mil's circuit assembly was this past weekend.
she came over for dinner to our home after the assembly.
in conversation, it came up that a known pedophile was seen walking to the bathroom holding a young boy's hand-no relation to the boy at all, although that wouldn't make a difference!
If he were truly repentant then he would not do anything to tempt himself or cause concern in others. The fact that someone felt enough concern to spot what was going on and stay in their seat praying shows that he has behaved inappropriately. He should have the common sense to restrict his contact with children and certainly go nowhere with a child on his own. Just shows that god had no part in the process.
Seriously if you have the ability to help a child then it is beholden on you to do so.
well, we spend enough time on this forum criticizing the society don't we?
i think we should even this out by commending them whenever they get something right.. for example, the cover of the 2012 yearbook is a vast improvement on the year before!.
graphics guy: so ed, what pictures do you want on our 2011 yearbook cover?
Yes an improvement but then it wasn't hard they set the benchmark very low the previous year.

Tell the family and tell the authorities. Even if nothing happened this man is giving in to temptation and it may only be a matter of time. What the heck were they thinking a hall full of people and no one stopped him. This apathy is disgusting.
this fading business is hard!
there really is no come and go freely in this aweful religion (prison) as i'm finding out more and more.
i missed a couple of meetings and now i was asked a couple of days ago if i was a available for a sheparding calltm in a few weeks; i told them i'd get back to them.
Thank you I really appreciate your loving offer. However it is not a good time at present but I have your number and once things are more settled I will call you and set something up.
i was moved to put this thread out after talking to a board member here who was treated very disrespectfully from her jw family after her own husband died.
my question isn't trying to pigeonhole anybody or i'm not saying there's a right or wrong answer - the question is designed to just openly discuss the negatives and positives of going to a jw funeral or not, and the implications or ramifications for doing so or not.. i believe it's definitely a personal decision based on different circumstances for each individual.
for example : let's say a person is an inactive jw and they were sexually abused or treated in other inhumane ways by still active jw relatives .
very often it isn't a funeral as the deceased is not there it is generally a memorial service at the Kingdom hall with families having a private event at the crematorium. I would not attend such a memorial service since it isn't really for the deceased it is for the society. The deceased provides the excuse for the service but the society is the subject. For this reason I would see no need to pander to witness sensibilities and be in attendance. I do not feel that I would be dishonouring the person since I would remember them in my own way and what is important is to be available in life not present at death.
I would attend a quiet family event at the crematorium even if witnesses were in attendance since that is a proper goodbye and an appropriate setting. Funeral Directors are able to arrange for private time for the family to say goodbye and I am confident that I can negotiate JW stupidity in this neutral setting.
What I find cruel is the way Ex JWs are excluded from comfort and association after the funeral regardless of their relationship to the deceased. This is the most disgusting example of shunning and shows the depths of cruelty involved. In my family the majority of us are not witnesses and therefore it is the witnesses who would be excluding themselves not the other way around.
