the screenplay was an acceptable compromise between the brevity neccesary in converting a book to a film, although one part (the dursley's leaving privett drive to escape the letters and being hunted down by hagrid) was done very badly.. the actors were excellent, and (thank god, nothing against american's, but i object to english stories being americanised for no reason other than american cultural imperialism) an excellent cast of top-quality 'supporting' english, or i should say british (as robbie coltraine is great as hagrid (and big!
Abaddon,
I agree they were not master pieces they were however (especially 4 and 5) good action movies. My problem with the new star wars movies is that they are sanitized and scrubbed clean so as not to be offensive (except for the obviously racial Jar Jar).
My point is instead of a PG-13 rated action film the series is heading towards a G rated cartoon.
Jelly
For those of you from other countries America has a rating system for movies:
G – Kids movies completely harmless (care bares, etc)
PG – Some light antics but no nudity or serious obscenities. Some violence.
PG-13 – a little more adult, violence as long as not to graphic, some suggestive themes (sexual)
R- Women showing Breast can be found in movies with this rating.
X- Porn
XXX- Twisted Porn
with all the talk of politics on the board lately i thought i would share with you some information on an important debate going on right now in the us.
that would be the economic stimulus package.. http://216.33.240.250/cgi-bin/linkrd?_lang=en&lah=28bb2a04d1720e2779197658f7ba7d97&lat=1006869672&hm___action=http%3a%2f%2fwww%2emotherjones%2ecom%2fweb_exclusives%2fcommentary%2fopinion%2fstimulus%2ehtml.
the meat of the article reads:.
Seeker,
I agree with you that this package is bad, it’s not really a stimulus package at all. But my point of contention is that it is not corporate welfare. The money the corporations are going to be getting is from the money they earned, it’s a tax break. Welfare is where you get money from the government that you NEVER earned, i.e. Pork.
I agree with the concept of tax cuts to stimulate an economy (coupled with a few spending programs that focus on infrastructure) but I think the tax incentives need to be more focused. If you make the law so that companies COG is decreased by investment in alternative energy sources they will invest just in order to stay competitive. Tax cuts, when done correctly, can be used to reward behavior and gently nudge industry in a beneficial direction
Richard Murray,
Good point about business passing on cost, very true. I think we need to focus on creating incentives for industries to stay here. Incentives like lower tax rates. I would like to see these tax breaks however be applied with a little more common sense. The current proposal just seems to be aimed at enlarging businesses profit but with little real benefit to the economy as a whole.

I agree Gambler,
The first star wars was great, blood, action, drama. almost perfect. The Phantom Menace was just a kids movie pure and simple and the next one looks like it was written for 13 year old girls.
I want to see someones arm get hacked off by a light saber!!!!

I saw Harry Potter sunday and thought it was very good. I never read the book so I did not have any preconcieved ideas about how the plot line should develop.
LOTR looks like its going to be a great movie.
the new Star Wars flick looks like it is going to suck.

That is the very reason why I think affirmative action is an important program. Over 400 yrs blacks were denied the opportunity to establish themselves. What's wrong with a government policy that just ensures that at lesst in some instances SOME of them are allowed a shot. Really that's all they get is just a shot. If a affirmtive action recepient flunks out of school, then they flunk out. If they don't do a good job they get fired. I don't see any real advantage in that.
AFFERMATIVE ACTION:
Affirmative action is just another form of racism, pure and simple. Not allowing someone a job when they are more qualified than anyone else simply due to the color of their skin is inexcusable; whether they are white or black. The only exception to this should be the police force; they are a special situation that needs some racial balance immediately. There are still discrepancies in the white black community that need to be addressed I feel that this would best be addressed by creating cheap and quality education training (not just tech school but grade school through university also) for everybody (white and black) this would ultimately help the economy also. So basically what I am saying is that I agree there is a problem but in order to solve it we need to deal with here and now and more creative solutions than just repeating past wrongs on a new race. Honestly if you tell a white man the job he is more qualified for has to go to a black man because of 400 years of oppression there is a chance you just made a new racist. Punish the companies that have discriminatory hiring practices make the fines so stiff that companies will be afraid to break the law, that coupled with more readily available quality education is (in my opinion) a much better solution to the race problem.
Destruction just leads to destruction.
UNCLE TOMS:
Condoleezza (sp?) Rice, Colon Powel, Clarence Thomas, and J.C. Watts are all very educated hard working people why would black people consider them uncle toms? Just because they don’t agree with their politics? This is an honest question I would like to know. As a side point at my university there are some black economic professors that emigrated from African countries; these guys are way to the right I mean way, are they uncle toms?
WELFARE: CORPORATE AND PRIVATE:
Neither works. Any time you directly hand money to people whether they are a corporation (called pork) or a citizen (called welfare) they will get into a situation where they come to depend on it PERMENATLY. I think the current welfare laws are a step in the right direction (temporary and coupled with work training programs) and we have already seen the results from them. More is needed however I would like to see more welfare to work programs and state training (higher quality programs also). Sometimes republicans forget that you have to spend money to get people off welfare. As far as corporate pork I also think that is just like welfare. I would rather see tax incentives offered to companies that do things that benefit the nation. Example if you invest in alternative energy (solar panels) for you company that should be tax subsidized; employee training and education should also get the company a tax break. If you make things economically advantages for companies they will do them.
The government should help when people are faced with a temporary need; they should help with assistance and training to move these them from dependence to independence whether they are an individual or a corporation.

P.S. I dont think I every slamed 'welfare mothers' or 'crack babies' in any of my postings.

My point simply put is this:
FREE SPEECH:
I think there is a problem with free speech in America today. Basically there are a large number (not the majority) of people that feel free speech is the freedom people have to agree with their viewpoint. Anyone that expresses a conservative view and happens to be white is automatically labeled a racist. I really don’t think the poster listed any opinions that wouldn’t be shared by JC Watts , Alan Keyes, or Clarence Thomas. Does that mean these men are ‘uncle toms’ or does simply the fact that they are black allow them to state opinions white men cannot and if so is that right. I think not.
RACISM and THE PAST:
Black people were screwed in America. Racism is still a problem in America, both black racism and white racism. To solve this I feel we have to make a choice focus on the past or look to the future. Affirmative Action just basically tries to right the wrongs on the black community by repeating them on the white community. This just leads to less cohesive race relations and more prejudice. It’s the politics of destruction; this happened to us now it happens to you. I think a more positive approach would be to have very stiff financial penalties for companies that engage in discriminatory hiring practices. Companies understand money if you make racism expensive it will go away. However coupled with the vigorous prosecution of laws I believe job training, inexpensive university education, and well funded public schools must be made available to everyone.
Some of the discrepancies in CEO’s are due to several reasons. One the white community is presently bettered educated than the black (more white people go to and finish college). I did not say smarter just better educated. This is due to several reasons one is the inadequately funded public schools in not only black but also all poor neighborhoods. I think that all schools should be funded on the student population and not the surrounding areas real estate tax rev. (What this causes is very rich neighborhoods tend to have amazingly nice public schools with more resources and higher pay for teachers; this naturally draws a higher quality teacher to the richer neighborhoods)
CONCLUSION:
This was kinda long winded but I feel we need to ‘grow out’ of racism by creating opportunities (through training and education), and punishing discriminatory companies; not punishing people for their lack of pigment. I also feel we should not just label people racist simply because they do not agree with our viewpoint.

Bigboi,
I am not sure I understand you 100% (its late and I am tired). Racism is still a problem in America, it was worse in the 60’s and 70’s but it is still a problem that needs to be addressed. My point is that I don’t feel that dwelling on the past, silencing people who voice different opinions by calling them bigots, or reverse racism in the form of affirmative action are solutions.
I would like to see:
1 tougher laws and penalties on companies that get caught for discrimination
Companies understand money if you make discrimination unprofitable it will stop
2 Every public school should get money based on student population and not local real estate tax
This has not only hurt minority children but also the children of everyone in poorer neighborhoods
Okay now on to free land:
The land was free but getting there was not. People had to often sell everything they had to make the trip and many of them did die. In America there is still cheap land in the Midwest if you want to try farming look at the land prices in Utah, Montana, North Dokato and places around there. No one in my family moved out west until 1965 no free land by then we had to buy it just like everyone else.

WonderWoman,
I don’t think you disagree with me I think you misread what I wrote. If someone is Homeless due to mental illness then the nation should take care of them. I think it’s our responsibility as a people. However if someone is homeless solely due to his or her own bad decisions, drugs, lazy, etc. I feel no responsibility to them.
SixofNine,
That is exactly what you said. You pasted his quote on not celebrating Kawanza as proof that the writer is a racist, you mentioned the reason for this is the seemingly disjointed way the line flowed with the rest of the piece. My point was that the whole piece was simply a series of off topic lines on a variety of subjects the common theme were things that irritate the author. I find it interesting that people do not feel Muslims or Jews are racist for not celebrating Christmas but somehow white people are racist for not celebrating kawanza. I think this is what the author was trying to say and it is not racist.
Bigboi
My success and failures in my life have nothing to do with my ancestors and neither does yours. As for the government programs that helped us white English speaking folk when we first immigrated here quite simply there were none, well there was free land in the west you might starve but it was free. Granted things were different and some government programs are necessary it is ignorant to blame the current conditions of any immigrant community on slavery or any issues that happened over 100 years ago.
