WT articles that make you go, "WTF?"

march 1, 2011 wt kool aid edition.... the article: does the bible condemn gambling.

notice the highlighted boxes.... first the indication that the catholic church does not consider gambling itself a sin... and then challenges that because no scriptural passages are given in proof of their assertion.. the very next column though, the wts admits that the bible does not directly mention gambling.

so, um, how do you expect the catholics to come up with scriptures if there are none?.

Good catch and analysis! Their conclusion actually refers to scriptures that talk about money, but they insert gambling there instead. Looks like another poorly written article has slipped by the ever watchful eye of the boys in the ivory tower.

This is actually in the public WT. Good idea WT, alienate more peotential recruits by condemning something that probably 75% of the population engages in from time to time, without any real scriptural backing.

I can see it now - Interview with a JW

Employer: "So I see here you graduated high school, but never went to college, how come?"

JW: "Well, I was told by one of my church elders that reading the Awake magazine is equivalent to a 4 year degree. I have been reading the Awake for 15 years now, so I'm sure I have made it by now"

Employer "I've never heard of the Awake magazine, what is it about"

JW: (Moving into recruiting mode) "The Awake covers news and current events, with the Bible's view in mind. It used to be published twice each month, but for about the last five years, it is only published once a month."

Employer "How big is this magazine?"

JW: "Each issue is 32 pages long!"

Employer: "So before 2005, you read 64 pages a month, and since then you have read 32 pages a month, right?"

JW: "Uhhhhhh"

Employer: "Does this magazine have pictures?"

JW: "Yes"

Employer "How many pages per magazine are pictures or ads?"

JW: "About 6 or 7"

Employer: "So you read 25 pages a month of a religious magazine, and you think that equals a four year degree?"

you will be pleased to learn that during april 2011, publishers who wish to serve as auxiliary pioneers may indicate on the application whether they will be working toward a 30-hour or 50-hour requirement for the month.

this is a special arrangement for the month of april 2011 only.

Slimboy, good point, that is exactly what I was referencing in my previous post. If they permanently reduce it to 30 hours then they have a much larger pool to target. While not many can do 50 or 70 hours, plenty could find 30 a month (or at least the elders could hint to them from the podium that they have 30 free hours). In reality, squeezing in that 30 will cause a lot more stress on many rank and filers. Less weekend time, more pressure to meet the quota, less of a chance to get a real life and/or get out of the org.

we were always told how the demons .

we avoided 2 door cars because it was (obviously) not a good service car.. there are plenty of things that you might think of to add to the list of no-nos for jehovah's witnesses.

Well, seriously, I passed up on plenty of good movies because of their rating.

College, because it was a waste of time, and the end was soooooooo close (20 years ago now)

A decent job at the time, because it would interfere with "kingdom interests" Since when does sitting in a windowless building equal kingdom interests.

The list could go on forever.

I agree with sd-7, a trial balloon to see how the sheep respond. Probably 50% of the pubs will get suckered into this ploy, allowing the GB to toot their horn a few months later with 500k "auxilary pios" in April.

Looks like the hour change may finally be coming. It is a dangerous thing for the R&F though, as the elders will be able to beat almost any housewife, young person or retiree with the argument "Its only 30 hours a month, you can't do that?"
