the title of this series of threads is rhetorical.
i am going to answer it with my own experience.
before i do that, i want to discuss what we are told through the literature and the instruction that is given during meetings, assemblies and conventions, for the reasons why people leave the truth.. the watchtower of 15 november 2008, in the article help them return without delay indicates people leave because of the following:.

i feel there are some weaknesses in the legal defenses that the watchtower society uses when enforcing shunning on former members.
one is that they claim that getting baptised makes someone a jehovah's witness and implies that they are willing to live by watchtower rules.
however, they don't use baptism as the criteria for counting their members.
Very, very interesting post. I believe the elders will soon be looking for a way to DF or DA me, so this is very useful. I haven't been in circus for over 6 months now, so I should be able to use this as I'm considered inactive. The only hold up with this letter I can see is this:
Within the past few years, the WTS made an adjustment to how they announce DFings and DAings. I thought nothing of it at first, but now realize why they did this. All they announce at the meeting now is, "Brother So-and-So is no longer one of JW's." They don't actually mention anything about your moral character or anything like that, and they don't specifically say to cut off all communication with that person. The only way I can see around this would be to prove from their own literature that they command the R&F to cease talking with anyone who used to be a witness but no longer is. Any thoughts on how to incorporate that into the letter? I figure they could use the excuse that they are only announcing the termination of your membership, and nothing about your moral character. Thoughts?

a real tragedy here yesterday; regardless of our feelings about the religion itself, we lost some good friends and genuinely nice people yesterday; these were some of "the good ones"--why is it always them??.
http://www.wfaa.com/news/local/accident-80138632.html.
southlake four people died saturday after their car flipped over into a six-foot-deep pond in southlake, police said.. just before 11:20 a.m. saturday, the toyota sedan drove through the intersection of lonesome dove road and burney lane, crashed into a metal fence, hit a tree, and landed upside-down in a pond on the grounds of a mansion.. "they came through this stop sign and, from eyewitness accounts, they never slowed down," said neighbor byron copeland.. copeland said the residents of the property raced to try and help.
I have to say I am shocked by some of the comments that are on this posting. Why are some of you worrying about how the JW's would react if an xJW died? 4 human beings died. the end. I am actually appalled by some of the heartless comments on here. Why is our compassion for human life being tainted by hatred for the organization? Do you feel the same way about people in Iran who die every day from bombings. Do you think that because they are part of the muslim religion, they don't deserve our compassion? Granted the muslim religion has some extremist terrorists who would kill without a second thought, but the majority aren't like that. The majority of JW's aren't cold heartless people either. People died. Human beings. Life. That should be all that matters. Something to think about: Does the WTS still have so much control over your life that you can't feel compassion when one of their members dies? Is your hatred of the religion tainting everything else in your life? Any of you who were witnesses at one time know that you really thought you were helping people. Why do people who think they are helping us not deserve our compassion when they die? What's with this mentality of "They wouldn't support us so we won't support them"? That just makes us no better.
And another thing, someone posted that they know they are in a cult. Not true. The majority do not. I thought it was the "True Religion" not too long ago myself. That's the vicious part about cults, is often times you don't know you're in one.
My heart goes out to these people. I hope their families are able to cope with the loss they have just suffered.

i knew a few families that wink wink did not celebrate gift giving for christmas.
instead, they celebrated "family day".
.
My family did. We never celebrated it on xmas, but we would usually have it once a year. We would wrap presents, and have a special dinner with sparkling apple cider etc etc.

since my fade, i have decided to do what all jw men and some jw women do.
i have grown a beard.
i have more compliments on it from people i work with and come in contact with than ever before.
I am on the third week of my first real beard ever. I like it. I just left the WT and decided to grow one. My girlfriend just bought me a beard trimmer for Christmas. Sweetness. I'm lovin it. And the best part, it looks good.

do atheists celebrate christmas, the celebration of christ's birth?.
if so, why?.
I just celebrated Christmas with my girlfriend and her family. None of them believe in Christ: That he was/is God/God's Son. We still celebrated. Nobody I work with (over 60 people) celebrated Christ's birth. We celebrated Christmas. Christmas doesn't mean what it did 50 years ago. Nobody I know puts up a tree and lights and gets presents etc. in honor of Christ. I would say that for at least half of Americans, it is a Federal holiday where one can get together with family and enjoy time off. So the assumption that one is celebrating Christ's birthday is off. Today Christmas and Christ's birthday are two seperate things. That's how I see it at least.

when you buy a blu ray player or other hd devices, you will need to purchase a cable to connect it to your tv (or however your system is configured).. salespeople will typically try to sell you a "monster" cable or some high priced product.
when buying my blu ray player for $79, they tried to sell me a cable for $59.. beware!
with digital signals, you either get the signal or you don't.
Hands down the best place to purchase cables is from a place called monoprice. I don't want to say more on it as I don't want to advertise, but google it and you'll find great deals.
With HDMI cables, what you really need to pay attention to is the gauge. Cables can have gold plating and all the bells and whistles, but if it is a low gauge, it will show digital artifacts or cut out completely. I have a walmart cable that would lose the signal if I upped it to 720P. I had to keep it on 480P just to get it to work.
Gauges go from high to low. i.e. 24 gauge is a very thin wire, whereas 14 gauge is very thick. So the lower the gauge the better. That goes for speaker wires too. The problem is most people, including Monster Cable, don't advertise the gauge size. Also, the longer the wire, the lower the gauge should be.
To give you an idea of how good that website I mentioned is, I paid $20 for a 25' DVI to HDMI cable, which is unheard of. It would have been over $100 from Monster Cable.

i'm a great fan of aphorisms.
zen has some of the classic ones.
the moral consequences of doing whatever you do is that you will be the sort of person who did that.. "it's best to ride the horse in the direction it's going.".
One hour spent angry is 60 minutes of lost happiness.
i love circular reasoning.
it's so easy to make up anything you want.
one of my favorites is when i asked an elder about bible canon:.
I love circular reasoning. It's so easy to make up anything you want. One of my favorites is when I asked an elder about Bible Canon:
Me: "So how do we know we have the right Bible? Who decided these were the books we would use?"
Elder: "There were Jewish Councils that were created to establish Canon from Apocrypha."
Me: "How do I know I can trust those Jewish Councils?"
Elder: "Because the Jews were God's people."
Me: "Says who?"
Elder: "The Bible."
Me: "......................."
Any other favorites out there?
