  my opinion is that atheism is not a belief.

  The only times I encounter discussions of religion or belief which include the term: ATHEIST...are in polemical contexts.

  That's an interesting point, Terry.

  After you posted this I gave it some thought, and I realized that in real life if someone asks me "What religion do you belong to?" or "Do you go to church?" or "Are you a Christian?" - I never say "No, I'm an atheist" or "No, I'm agnostic."

  I simply say something like "No, I don't have a religion" or "I don't go to church."

  but irony is funny, or intellectual, somehow superior?.

  recently i began to really understand sarcasm and why it is so very ugly.

  Reading the Wikipedia entry doesn't make it any easier to understand the difference between sarcasm and irony, unless you can understand language operating on two levels......

  OMG it's too difficult for me to understand with my brain damage.

  Thanks for the pic, TheClarinetist. I disagree though - this is neither sarcastic nor hilarious - perhaps it's indeed a good but basic example of visual irony?

  There's no sneering, no 180 degrees directed at anyone, he's just being witty, saying what he doesn't mean, in an ironic way.

  alice, i have a sense that you've dug yourself a hole on this forum and don't know how to get out of it.. you would probably like to engage and share your stories as most of us do here, and as you've done in your child abuse thread, but you've created an antagonistic persona that makes it difficult for many to empathize with your real life concerns and experiences.. i suggest that you retire your "alice in wonderland" moniker and return as a normal poster, a jw with doubts.

  For years I have tried to understand the difference between SARCASM and IRONY.

  Sarcasm is "the lowest form of wit", some say. But irony is funny, or intellectual, somehow superior?

  Recently I began to really understand sarcasm and why it is so very ugly. Sarcasm is simply stupidly stating the complete opposite of what you mean, and hoping that your recipient/listener/reader will understand that what you mean is 180 degrees from what you stated. And that the reason for speaking in that way is simply sneering a bit, and hoping your victim and all bystanders will "get" you.

  Irony is more subtle. I love the intelligence of irony, but I find it difficult to explain.

  So how is sarcasm different from irony? Do you have any good examples?

  I understand that Bethel is your lifestyle, your only current income, probably what your JW family outside of Bethel wants for you. But deep down I think you know that's it's not an authentic way of life for you.

  Think seriously about getting out and being true to yourself. Many here on www.jehovahs-witness.net would be willing to help you if you were to reach out to them.

  heres the situation.... met a girl i am tottally infatuated with.

  i could just hang out with her and not have sex but she has not been in a relationship in a year and shes pretty horny.

  im a normal dude so i dont want to refuse her.. i cant decide if im rationalizing my feelings.
