Good morning!
I just had to weigh in on this discussion. As a former JW and the father of children who are extremely loyal to the Watchtower Society, I may at some point in my life (hopefully decades from now!) find myself in the position of needing their help.
So when I read this quote from the Kingdom Ministry that was quoted above "For example, a disfellowshiped parent may be sick or no longer able to care for himself financially or physically. The Christian children have a Scriptural and moral obligation to assist. (1 Tim. 5:8)," I could feel my blood pressure go up! :)
I have read this quote before and it really angers me. Why in the heck is it these 'Christian children's' scriptural and moral obligation to assist a sick, elderly parent (don't get me wrong, I am glad they can at least do that much!), but prior to that sickness, at least according to the Watchtower, there appears to be NO SCRIPTURAL OR MORAL obligation to show any form of 'honor' to their parent by checking in to see how their parent is doing (but instead they must treat their parent as DEAD)??? Maybe if these children had checked in on their parent, the parent wouldn't have gotten sick to begin with...
Talk about the Watchtower Society twisting things for their own purposes.
Thanks for letting me vent!
