My Marriage Ending...Or Other Options
by doinmypart ini don't usually post regarding my personal relationship, but i need some help.. i've been married for 20+ years (married young, both of us raised as witnesses), and my wife and i have kids.
my wife feels like i've disappointed her, made a fool of her, and betrayed her when i stopped being a witness.
other than the witness-thing we seem to have a pretty good marriage, but she can't get over the fact that i'm never going to be a witness again.

On a positive note, at least they're making it clear who the leaders are, instead of some nebulous "society". In the 80's and 90's it was common to hear "the Society says...". Now it's the "the faithful slave says..." or "the governing body says..." as an appeal to authority when "reasoning".
Well, actually I'm not sure how that's an improvement, but it is a difference.

In North America there haven't been charges for literature since at least the 1990's. It's rare to hear a JW mention the donation arrangement in the ministry.

Facebook: Local Ruling By Elders in Nearby Congregation
by mentallyfree31 injust heard from a friend that a nearby body of elders in their congregation have decided that anybody who is on facebook will not be able to have privleges in their congregation.. hilarious!.

@MeanMrMustard: Wow. I currently have three elders as facebook friends right now.
The application of the counsel can be inconsistent. In my area it is considered fine if the Elder uses facebook for business purposes.

Why did I get baptized?
As a young teen, my mom, with all good intentions, kept asking me "what is holding you back from getting baptized?" I kept answering "I don't know".
Finally, I got baptized because it was the "right thing to do". I considered it "positive peer pressure". And I felt good about the praise I got in the congregation about my spiritual progress, good talks, etc.

If you could ask one question to an active JW to get them to open their mind about their beliefs, what would it be?
by Franklin Massey inthis question was posed to me by a poster named ice cream.
i don't know my answer yet.

@Pirata, the very first paragraph contradicts the Bible when it says that Jesus was not created. Colossians specifically calls him "The Firstborn of all Creation."
I started a new thread here to prevent getting this thread too off topic:

Since 12/28/2010@Ding,
Please elaborate here, or via a PM to me about The Trinity and what the 'world's' acutally explanation is, if Jehovah's Witnesses have it wrong. I've always been taught that the Trinity was different depending on the person you asked. No one has ever explained it to me the same way as the previous person, and frankly, their explinations were silly, at best (It's like and Egg...apple...or some such illustration). I'll never forget asking my Sister-In-Law (a Methodist) to explain it to me, and she just sounded rediculous. Her boyfriend at the time was Bahai (sp?). He also found her explination silly. But, they do not believe in a Trinity either, nor do Muslims (largest religion in the world (if JWs are excluded from Christianity), nor the Jews. I would like to hear a good, common sense explination.
The Bible is pretty simple when it comes down to it. This should be something easy to understand if it is a fundamental teaching of God.

Since 12/31/2009I don't believe in the Trinity, but there is a thorough discussion of the brochure "should you believe in the Trinity" by Christians who believe in the Trinity:
http://4witness.org/jwysbt/ysbt_contents.php
It's a long read, but addresses the context of all quotations made in the brochure.

Like I said, I don't believe in the Trinity. I think it is a by-product of of trying to unify the concept of God in the Hebrew scriptures with the importance that Jesus had to the 1st C. Christians and the role of the Holy Spirit. That being said, to argue for or against it, it's good to have a concept of what contemporary Christians believe it is.

Okay, I'll take a stab at it.
Q1: If we ever think that the Bible teaches differently than the Governing Body, is it safe to trust our reasoning?
A1: No, human reasoning can be misleading. We should wait on Jehovah and trust the faithful slave.
Q2: If human reasoning is misleading, then how can we trust our reasoning that we have the Truth?
