I learned to read with Dick and Jane and Sally. How about you?
by Fatfreek ini can hardly believe the prices they're getting for pristine copies of those books they handed out to those of us with scalps populated with lice, hands and fingers encrusted with bits of jelly and dried mud.
they're getting between $100 and $200 per copy.. thanks to google images, i couldn't resist taking another peek between some of those charming colored pages as a reminder to what we were actually exposed to in trying to make us literate.. most of these look contemporary to when i went to school -- the 1940's.
one of them may go back into the 1930's.

My daughter Rachel thinks dragons really existed. She asked me about it a few months ago and I cannot refute the supposition as nonsense. I have no evidence either way. I do wonder about many creatures from myth and wonder if they once had a basis in fact.. maybe we'll never know. The creatures such as the unicorn, griffin, phoenix, dragon etc, have often had me wondering if they or creatures like them once existed. I am not including mythical Greek creatures, as I do feel that they are the result of very active imaginations...plus, there are none that I like! Anyway...dragons are facinating, but I did think, WHY would God mention the great dragon in the bible as a ferocious creature and have Satan correspond to it, if it was mythical and never existed. Surely the CREATOR would know??!

Where is the best place in the world to live?
by highdose incould be just a whim, but highdoses feet are feeling itchy today.
i'm young, unattached was thinking about upping sticks again maybe.. .
can i get any recomendations from anyone?.

hmmmm...I've been fortunate to live in various countries...highdose, I don't know where you are based? CAN you move wherever you choose? I lived in Auckland for many years, and love NZ, although having being born there I can live there....if you haven't been to NZ you must go, even for a holiday. Singapore is lovely but really hot, as is Malaysia. I love Texas, esp. Austin, but it's really hot too. It really depends what you like in a country. I'm currently in Ireland, and it's beautiful, but too damp and cold. I lived in Paris (france)..it's great, but you need to work there full time. I would get a round the world ticket and do some personal investigation! If you have the funds, will, energy, and legal right to move then do so. I love England too.... really beautiful. My mum lives in Lincoln, a medieval city. I love it. Hate London. Too big and impersonal, but a young single would probably love it. Not a place to be unless you make friends really easily. Almeria in Spain is nice too, and yes New Hampshire is lovely. I knows about the sales tax etc., and if I could legally live in the US..I would go there in the morning! It all depends on where you can legally live, as you never know what might happen, and it is always easier do do things by the book, that way you can get the proper aid you may need in time. Best of luck...x

No global warming for 15 years, a key scientist admitted

Wow!...there seems to be alot of negativity in this thread... sad. Well....while I am currently studying global warming as part of my science degree maybe I can throw in my euro's worth! (inflation)... While researching GW., it is important to keep a close eye on the GMST (Global Mean Surface Temperature). This will clearly indicate a rise or fall of temperature on a global scale and rule out anomalies and rogue years etc. From the years 1961-1990 there has been an increase of GMST of 0.8%. This may not seem alot, but when you look more closely, you soon realise that the GMST has increased unusually with parallels in human activity, from the Industrial Revolution era to today. In the Arctic and Antarctic regions, the temp rise has been around 1.5% per century. What can be difficult to determine is whether the recent trend of GMST increase is the beginning of a real long term increase in temp., or just a feature in a series of erratic temperature changes. It is therefore important to look at temperature history. The fossil record, along with the pollen record can aid scientists in determining the long term trend. Still living in an ice age, we are going through a warming period...contradictory as that may seem to many. Now although there have been trends in GW through earth's temp. history going back hundreds of millions of years, a close study of the aforementioned methods have determined that from 300mn years ago to now, there has been increase in temperature, but none as much as during our modern times. There has been a fluctuation in Temperature of 10 degrees C or more, over the past 20,000 years, and the increase took about 10,000 years to occur. This works out at a rate of 0.001 degree Celcius/year, or 0.1 degree C per century. So?? Well, the Current increase in temp., is Five times greater than in the past. Globally, the warming rate is greatest at the poles (1.5 degrees C) and 0.5 D/C at the equator. AS we are living in an interglacial period, the weather will be warmer, but NOT to the degree it is now. Human activity has increased this so much, and although there would be lots more to write, such as the causes of GMST, I hope maybe i have not bored anyone too much and that some may look into it more thoroughly, as it is a facinating subject..

I and the Father are one. John 10:30.
by dgp ini'm not that good at quoting the bible.
i see no value in learning verses by heart, sorry.
however, i just learned that in the new world translation (the organization's bible), john 10:30, jesus is said to say "i and the father are one".

I agree with xbro....this post has become a little nasty. Cofty, you seem intelligent...why the maligning of Stephen and his valid remarks? If I wanted to know about the bible and God, I would NOT ask a self-professed athiest..I would ask a person who has studied the bible. Nor would I ask a butcher information on astronomy..(assuming he is not a qualified astronomer)! Take it easy all. This is a forum, not a site to attack other users. If you want to get personal, take it to personal messaging please! Thanks

response from Ray Franz on generation change
by isaacaustin inthanks for your letter and the thoughts contained.
others had commented on the latest shift of the interpretation of this generation.
as you recognize this allows for an unending extension of time and likely stems from an awareness of the approach of the year 2014 marking 100 years since the date of 1914.. .

GromitSK...
Maybe I worded it wrong...i grew up a good irish catholic girl, and then became a JW...i have always been a spiritual person and the so called truths I learned, no longer true...well I can't prove ALL of them are false, but I have had the wind knocked out of me, and now having NO faith...it is alien to me. I NEED to know there is something better than nothing. Even as a scientist, I admit I believe in a creator and I am not used to drifting about spiritually not having ANY direction. Maybe it was just a comfort, but I fell hook line and sinker and have such a huge void as large as a supernova.....I know many may be critical, but different people need different things in life, and I need God. I just wish I could find him.

I Wish People Would Stop Calling It The Truth
by Quillsky inwhy do you call it "the truth"?
even after you leave??.
it's wrong on so many levels.
-
jdhf
It's funny how this subject came up. While visiting my friend the other week, who is leaving too, we both inadvertently called it the truth. We both laughed and agreed to try to say something else like 'the witnesses' etc.....I am trying to de-programme myself to not say it, mostly as It doesn't deserve to be called truth, or anything that resembles it. It is a really difficult thing to let go of, and for me I think partly as I am saddened that it isn't the truth...and I'm finding now that I don't know what direction to go in. Many who were really indoctrinated find it really hard to let go of this term, among others like 'brother' etc....time will heal the wounds and these terms will be a thing of the past eventually for most who leave. Don't get annoyed at those who use the terms JW's use every day....be patient and sympathetic as brainwashing is a cruel and sad thing to endure and empathy is needed by all toward those brave enough to leave this high control group..x
