I don't think I've ever known an elder who wasn't a tin-pot despot or a weirdo or some creepy combination of both...

Did you ever have any real weirdos ? in your congregation who were Elders ?
by smiddy in.....some of the things he did and got away with , to me now is unbeleivable , and maybe to you.. in all fairness he was well versed in the bible and very clever how he used it to put a critic to rest at the doors and in one instance when i was witnessing with him , he demoralised a pastor of his church .and i was impressed at that time.. but he had some strange ways , he was always looking for someone to break gods laws so to speak .he did set himself up as the policeman for enforcing gods law on the congregations .
( this is my description ) he was known to stand outside bros/sis.
homes to see if he could find something incriminating against them .

This generation will by now means pass away..."
by Jewel ini haven't been to a meeting (other than some cousins' weddings) for well over twenty years.
i've always wondered what the fds was going to do with the "generations" thing once pretty much everybody who had been alive in 1914 is gone.
i get that they've come up with some "new light" about this topic, but when i ask my mom (who's still in) i only get "well, the new understanding is complicated...".

Thank you all for your info, thoughts, and links.
Holy CATS...this IS absolutely inane. I remember seemingly endless bookstudies during the 70's in which we dissected the math in the Old Testament prophets, manipulating it so that it led to 1914 and then...the generation doctine. I remember an illustration of the "feet of clay" passage with everything labeled so that the "feet of clay" started in 1914 and then led to...the generation doctrine. I remember being told that my baby brother would never have to start school in "This System" because the end would come soon because "...this generation will by no means pass away..." (He's in his 40's). I remember giving multiple talks about the generation thing in the Ministry School in the 70's. I remember my elder uncle giving a Sunday talk about this topic (multiple times because we'd sometimes go to other congregations when he was the speaker there).
How can anyone who was a JW then buy this now? I mean, we're not talking about some tangential teaching...this was one of the foundations of the whole doctine, for Pete's Sake!
No wonder Mom doesn't want to talk about this...

I take this to mean that either she honestly doesn't understand the new explanation (unlikely, she's pretty sharp) or she can see (in her heart of hearts) that it really doesn't make sense and she doesnt' want to try to explain it because putting it in words will make is sound inane. I don't want to ask anyone else in my extended family that is still "in" because I don't want my curiousity mistaken for "interest"...I've had to fend off more that a few attempts to set me up as a bible-study in the last 20 years.
Can any of you give me the short and sweet version of the "new light" (and I mean that in the most sarcastic way possible) on this issue?

Hello - new

born-in, as was my husband.
we were both baptized as teens, married when we were teens (he was early 20s) and we were both the "perfect" witnesses.

I'm sorry, but I have to say this re Kim Kardashian (fluff thread, sort of)...
by AGuest inbut i do so to be fair (may you all have peace!):.
if she were my daughter, and kris humphries said to her what he said to ms. kim, when she voiced her concerns (again) about not wanting to move to minnesota (which she did before getting married and he "pretended" to accept), i might tell her he's the wrong guy/man, too.
no, i don't believe in divorce "just because,"... and don't know that i would tell my daughter to divorce him (she made her bed, so to say), but.... what did he say?

A Guest...You need to get yourself some books. Shoot, the Twilight series would be better than watching the junk you're watching. (Psss...you can find all kinds of them at the library and read them for free!)

Is this an anti-JW website?
by keyser soze inwhen i registered here over 4 years ago i thought it would be a good place to interact with like-minded christians who loved jehovah as much as i do.
but after reading some of the posts on here i'm beginning to believe that the sentiment on here is largely anti-witness.
i justed wanted to tell you all what vile and hateful people you are..

If I hear one more person say...
by iamwhoiam in"even if we don't agree with new light, we should ask ourselves, where else would we go?
without this organization, we would never have learned the basic bible truths we have today.".
this was stated twice in commenting and once by our conductor during our wt study yesterday.

You can't say that you are inspired by Jehovah (and therefore infallible) and then when you've said/done something obviously wrong say, "But we're imperfect humans" (elders) or "we just got us some New Light" (GB). You've gotta pick one or the other. You can't be infallible and imperfect at the same time.
And while it's hard to pin down exactly when you can say Russell invented the "religion", he published "Three Worlds and the Harvest of this World" in 1877. If you use that date as a beginning point (and there are arguments that you could start farther back) the "religion" is at least 134 years old.

I always wondered how I could be sure THIS "New Light" wasn't going to turn into next year's "Old Light" when some new "New Light" came out...

Confused...
by raxxxx in.
hiya and... i do not really know where to begin... currently a jw... slightly starting to fade... got a girlfriend baptised... i am baptised also... my head is a mess... i do not know what to believe anymore... never really fully trusted elders as it comes to 'leading the flock'... got burned a few times with their ... decisions etc.
read a few articles in here about their alleged false beliefs... do not really know what to do... wondered if any of you felt like that at any point... when something that you trusted and followed most of your life... does not seem to be what you thought it was... .

Raxxx-
Lots of us have done the fade and most of us know what you are feeling. When you're dealing with the WTBTS, it's not just a religion that you're doubting, but the underpinnings of the way you live your life.
As others have said, take your time and do your research. You'll be scared often and outraged just as often, but if you want to fade as opposed to DA'd or DF'd you'll have to keep your thoughts to yourself.
Come on here and ask as many questions as you like. Congratulations on starting on this journey early in your life...you'll have more time to enjoy the freedom on the other side!

Kids in hospital, JW family still shuns.
by mamalove init was an awful weekend both of my kids were in the hospital with pneumonia.
one had to stay the night and the other was treated in the er.
it was extremely stressful and worrisome to say the least.

I sympathise...very hard to have kids that are so miserable.
I'd just let it ride with the family. It will only up your stress level to take them on right now and it won't change them. Concentrate on your family and take care of yourself, as well. Hope everyone is on the road to recovery.
