Terry - it's okay. Thanks for the story. It's pretty good.
Maybe not book length - but certainly could be a 30 minute or hour twilight zone or hitchcock episode.
call me smiler.
they none of 'em seem to figure out how bad it's gonna be when they play it.
a pastor, hurt hands and a smile...that's all you really need.. the doc knows what he's talkin' about, as usual.. like he says, "people only look at you once and then never see you again.

we know the "bar" for pubs.
was lowered, 15 min/month pubs are counted.
increases in pubs are decreasing annually, 1.9% worldwide, .9% u.s. .
Disclaimer: I have no idea - but can speculate like everyone else.
Last year = 2011?
It could be due to world events last year - tsunami's? earthquakes? etc.
It could also be an up-tick in high school graduates with no career goals '...so, let's pioneer...' instead of going to college.
Note: kiddos graduating in 2011 were probably conceived in 1992 - wasn't there some sort of 'doomsday prediction' for the JWs in 1992-ish (similar to 1975)?
Last year = 2012?
Same answers as above.

Ingimar, welcome to the forum.
I am going to be nosey...
This is a second marriage for us both.
Okay, so he was married before...
...none of his family are jws, including his three adult kids who never went back to the hall when his first marriage broke up.
Okay. Was his first wife a JW? Why did his first marriage... well, end in divorce?
I am asking because, it may shed some light on his past that may (or may not) help you with what is going on right now.
Just a bit of info - if his first wife is still a JW - he was not really 'free' to remarry, according to JW rules. He may have some issues getting accepted by the other JWs. I.E. he may have to be 'disfellowshipped', and then 'reinstated', prior to his being accepted now - if they learn of his first marriage to a JW wife.
These are all JW B.S. rules.
If however, he was the only JW in the family when he got divorced before... never mind. Everything changes.

This year, my wife got me a remote control airplane, and Batman jammie bottoms. I also got binoculars.
Hey! I missed out on about 40 Christmasses...
my wife, my m-i-l and i were driving over to my wife's aunt's home on christmas day to celebrate christmas - which involved letting the aunt's great-great-grandkids open their presents, and eating an early supper (or late lunch).. we were on the way at around 10:30am to 11:00am to the house.
about a couple of miles away, whilst driving through the neighborhood, i spotted a couple of middle-aged young women wearing skirts down to their ankles, and carrying large handbags (aka 'bookbags').
they were between houses, and walking slowly... pioneer stroll?....
Since we're all taking trips in Mr. Peabody's Way Back machine...
Not dealing with field service on holidays, but in a similar vein - one time my mother and us kids were travelling on Thanksgiving Day. I don't remember the 'why' of it, but we were coming back home to San Antonio, and the big 1952 DeSoto broke down in a city north of here. I believe it was Temple, TX.
My mom was sitting in the driver's seat and mumbled, "Now... who do I know that lives in Temple?"
We all chided her, as she ALWAYS seemed to have some relative living somewhere... but we couldn't believe that she had one here - in this city.
Well, she thought for a minute, and then got out and went to the pay phone and looked in the local phone book. She found a name that looked familiar, and called the number. In a matter of minutes, she had found a long lost relative on her side of the family.
I need to inject that the relatives that she had, were not JW's. Here they were, in the middle of their own Thanksgiving celebration, but took the time to come out and 'save' us. They hauled us to their home (I think we left the car there at the gas station).
I remember it was in the evening, and they had the television set turned on - watching a football game... the Dallas Cowboys were playing (those were the days when the Cowboys could really kick butt).
These kind people, opened up their home to us, and fed us, and let us spend the night with them, all the while, my mom was talking about 'who died' - and 'who lives where' to the relatives and all.
As a kid (well, early teenager), I had never seen so much food in all my life - and it was leftovers - as they had already had their meal. We feasted that evening, but it wasn't 'Thanksgiving'. Not for us. Plus, we got to watch television - in color!
Oh... and to top it all off, one of the men was a mechanic, called around, and found a replacement water pump (the part that had broken), and they replaced it on the car, and we were able to be on our way later the next day.
I tell ya... those 'worldly' people are truly evil. (said with tongue firmly placed in cheek)

I just 'discovered yhis thread - or story. Very good writing Terry.
Keep it up. It would make a great short story - perhaps you could submit it to a monthly short story magazine (do they still exist?).

Anyway, instinctively, I blurted out "witnesses".
My wife sitting next to me in the car, and also saw them, said, "No way!"
"Yes, way." I calmly replied.
"On Christmas Day??!!" she asked incredously.
"Oh, yes! Even on Christmas Day. It's considered a 'special day' for door-knocking." I replied.
My wife studied with the JWs a long time ago - long before we met, so she knows a bit about them. She never got involved though, as she saw through their B.S., and discontinued studying with them.
It's always fun discussing things like this with her, as sometimes I can still shock her a bit.
I guess the really sad part is that I remember being the one walking to the homes on Christmas Day... New Years', etc. and waking up the nice folks behind the doors.

...anyone else get a gift ya shouldve gotten as a kid?
Well, last year my wife bought me a Daisy Red Ryder BB rifle. I still haven't opened it though... I guess I'm afraid I'll put my eye out.
i never have.
i seldom get the "flu" and if i do, it usually happens after everyone else has gotten it.. i know of many people who regularly get the flu shot and they seem to always still get sick..
No. I do not take a flu shot. The last time I did was when I was a teen and my mom succumbed to the panic being spread about the Hong Kong flu epidemic.
I usually do not get the flu - but if I do, it is no worse than those people who do take the flu shots.
we are only a few short months into the "no more announcements - let them read the notice board" at the meetings, and now the effects of that new directive are beginning to reveal themselves: no information being given out regarding someone's loss of a relative, no information about someone who is ill or been admitted to hospital, and definitely no information about families moving out of the area and going to other congregations!!.
however, announcements about "special" christmas day field service must be made!!.
the import of the apostle paul's words really seem to have gone over the "decision-makers'" heads - (galatians 6:10) really, then, as long as we have time favorable for it, let us work what is good toward all, but especially toward those related to [us] in the faith.. coupled with the removal of the weekly group book study, the detrimental consequences of eliminating fellow-feeling and closer contact with one another can only lead to one eventuality - alienating one another!.
"When did they announce that there would not be any of these kind of announcements? Nver heard of it."
See! It's working already...
