Hi AudeSapere, I'm not a doctor or a pharmacist either, but I do work in the medical field as a Med. Tech. and I just wanted to say that I agree with everyone to be very careful of statins. I've heard nothing but bad things about how dangerous the side effects can be for some people. A good friend of mine started getting severe muscle cramping in her legs shortly after her doctor prescribed Lipitor for her. She didn't connect it with the Lipitor immediately, and the muscle pain and weakness got worse and worse until she couldn't even get out of bed. She stopped taking the medication, but missed two months of work and now has permanent muscle damage. Apparently she was one of the few who experience rhabdomyolysis (muscle destruction) as a side effect. What makes it really scary though is that she was only on it for a couple of weeks! So *please* look at all of your treatment options before you make a decision.

Medical People: Lipitor vs Zocor (Simvastatin)? Which do you recommend??
by AudeSapere ini know we have a good representation of medically-trained people on this board so i want to put out this question:.
when treating a person with high cholesterol, which do you prefer: lipitor or zocor (simvastatin)?
if a person begins treatment with lipitor, is it necessary to use it for the rest of that person's life?

What year Did you Stop Attending Meetings - How Long were you a JW ?
by flipper ini'm trying to compare some statistics and figures on this to share later in the thread to see if more long-time witnesses are exiting- or are newer witnesses exiting after a shorter period of time.
and - are more people exiting in the last 10 to 15 years than before.
so your answers would be helpful in looking into this .

What's a really good movie you'd recommend that most people probably haven't seen?
by A.Fenderson inwhat's a really good movie you'd recommend that most people probably haven't seen?.
my personal recommendation: synecdoche, new york.
it's one of those movies that words fail utterly to capture--which really is the hallmark of a good movie, i suppose.

Newbie: Roll Call ---- Oldies Returning: Roll Call
by cameo-d ini have noticed a lot of newbies lately.
(i also noticed that after being absent for a year happy1975 is making a return visit.).
so, if you are a brand spanking newbie, post here and tell us a little about your interests, your state, your new direction in life, your favorite things, whatever you want to say---this is your thread.. .

I like to lurk a lot more than I like to post, but I like the idea of getting all the newbies together. So, hi everyone!
Right now I'm reading Crisis of Conscience - highly recommended, btw. I also asked my mom, an active JW, if she had ever heard anything about the WTS being involved with the UN. She was shocked, said it had to be a mistake, and asked their P.O. about it! (Or whatever the P.O.'s are called nowadays.) She said he acted completely shocked as well, and also said that it sounded like something apostate... Now I'm feeling guilty for sharing with her b/c I don't want her to get into trouble over my questions. She's definitely not at the point of leaving the JW's any time in the near future. So just be careful in presenting your findings to your family members who are still in!

guys, when you were JW's did you feel sorry for the subjugated sisters?
by highdose inin my cong i could name more than half the brothers who seemed to revel in squashing the sisters back into the door mat where they belonged.
nothing personaly irrated me more than being treated like a lower form of life simply because i didn't have a penis!.
but i never saw any brothers make a stand, or try to treat the sisters better.

I don't know how the brothers felt, but that was just one of the factors in helping me to decide that this religion was not for me. Even as a teenager I remember taking a look around and thinking - you want me to subjugate myself to that??? Hahaha, buh-bye now. :) As a "worldly" person I like to think that my husband and I work together as a team. We each have our strengths and weaknesses, but neither of us is inherently "better" than the other. Just my two cents as a former "sister".

Lol, I know exactly what you mean! The originals are still the best, imho. Anyone remember Crystal Pepsi? That was a big thing for a short time when I was a girl.

see what happens for "all" who venture into the wicked world
by booby inthis tripe from the june 15 tower.
how many of the witness kids "and adults" get into trouble right within the congregation.
just recently talked to an old friend still in whose witness son in law left his daughter for another and subsequently his daughter got hooked up with that ladys husband.

Broken Promises, I agree and think you summed it up very well. Unfortunately everyone makes mistakes, but I think you're especially vulnerable (a/k/a gullible) if you've been extremely sheltered your entire life. And like you said it's always easier for JW's to blame it on the big, bad world than to take responsiblity for their own actions.

Jamie, good question. Maybe temporary insanity?? Seriously, though, it was a combination of pressure from my parents and the fact that I've been out so long it was easier to only remember some of the more positive aspects of the religion - old friends, feeling of having found a truly good group of people even if I didn't believe it was the only "true" religion, etc. Unfortunately, this is the only religion I've ever really known, and even though I didn't agree with all of the JW teachings I really did believe that the WTS was sincere in trying to help others. Yep, I thought they were a bit misguided at times, but overall the best you were gonna find in this imperfect world. Of course now I realize how extremely naive that was, but I guess that's what a lifetime of indoctrination does for ya.
Again, I'm really grateful for this site - thanks everyone!

QFR: Should marriages be arranged for true Christians in the congregation?
by sd-7 inin many cultures, arranged marriages are a common practice.
often this involves the parents of both parties making specific arrangements for their children to marry upon reaching a certain age.
sometimes there is money or property given to the parents of the bride as compensation for the loss of her efforts in the household.

Wow, I was totally taken in for a minute there - great job! I agree that the only thing that really tipped me off was the reference to the form.
