Great question! I think there were a few in my JW life (left at 21) that genuinely cared about people in the congregation. Of course most just got a high off of being in charge, being naive that they were part of a cult. And then there were the the douche bags . . . . I think the only time I was afraid of the elders was when my mom would threaten to take me to them. It was always over weird things like forgetting to study (highlight) my Watchtower, or for questioning silly things like "Why are we leaving so early after the meeting today." Interestingly enough, during that phase of my mom making all the threats, she was a pioneer cheating on her best friend's (also pioneer) husband who also happened to be a pioneer and MS. One of these days I'll have to post my "life story". It's pretty unbelievable.

Does this happen to anyone else?
by doublelife inthis doesn't happen a lot but every once in a while, on a day that used to be my meeting night, i'll get a weird feeling.
it happened today.
it's hard to explain what it is.

Welcome kgirl!
The same thing would happen to me shortly after I left. It maybe lasted three or four years. I was born and raised in the cult, so Tuesdays and Thursdays were my dreaded evenings for almost 22 years. I probably missed no more than 2 meetings a year as I was unfortunately dragged to the meetings by an over-zealous mother. When I think about it my body actually gets that uncomfortable, sore feeling I got as a kid from sitting still so long. It's sad to think of how much of my childhood was wasted sitting at these mindless, pointless meetings. It takes a little while for your body and mind to readjust after all that. Now it's very rare that I ever think of the meetings on those nights, and cannot picture myself ever committing to such a demanding religious schedule again.

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I'm so sorry for your pain. I've been out of this cult for 13 years, and cannot believe it is still in existence. I think the longer you are out, the more you will realize how crazy this religion is. No matter what your family says, we DO care very much about you.
BTW - Don't you dare go to that "announcement" tomorrow. Those people are absolutely nuts, and thrive on humiliating anyone who can see over their "power". Try to go out and do something tomorrow night to keep your mind off of things a bit. Hope your family wakes up some day.

I was born into the religion and left when I was about 21. We had a special needs talk that focused on the "single sisters" in the congregation, which happened to be mainly just me and my roommate (who is still in the cult 13 years later). We were constantly being bothered by the loser men in the congregation. Most were at least twice our age and of course, big losers. One was in his 50's and had 4 kids, and somehow thought a marriage to a 21 year old could work. (Of course he never showed interest in anyone over 30.) Anyways the elder went on to say that instead of complaining about the lack of brothers, start appreciating the single "brothers" we have in the congregation and give them a chance. These single perverts all starting turning around in their seats and grinning at us, as in "are you listening girls". I got up out of my seat and blurted out loud "I'm tired of this shit!", and walked right out the door. I left all of my literature right on the floor and never went back. It was the best decision I ever made!

The moment I knew it was crap....
by Brocephus inalready had doubts from the time i got pubes... but i was about 15 and we were studying the revelation "book" for the upteenth time.
i realized for every actual bible verse they qouted there was 2-3 paragraphs of conjecture, assumption, faulty logic and just plain stupidity.
that's when i began to plan my escape.

When at a circuit assembly an entire talk was about the evil movie . . . . . . . E.T.! A puppet alien who likes Rieces Pieces candy is something every Christian should be cautious of.

How about this for a quote . . . . "How do you think Jehovah feels about divorcing your abusive elder husband?"
