Don't forget Seattle--
SAND IN EVERYONE'S UNDERWEAR! AT ALL TIMES!
i read through the article on the watchtower's official site about christmas.
the usual "christmas has pagan roots and so is wrong" argument was presented.
however, i noticed another point that was made which i think is unbelievably ridiculous.

SAND IN EVERYONE'S UNDERWEAR! AT ALL TIMES!
today on dr. phil, he says to a woman who has not spoken to her brother and sisters for 12 years:"withholding emotion is one of the most mean and vicious and aggressive things you can do.".
i think he'd have a field day with jws who shun friends and family members who choose to leave the organization!.
love, scully.
But don't you get it Scully -- shunning is an expression of "LOVE" !! For if you don't shun, you're merely ENCOURAGING the wrongdoer to continue down the "broad and spacious path leading off into destruction". So all that silence we hear -- that's true Christian LOVE, JW style!!
Gopher stole my thought!
Meanwhile this nice love of course causes people to come back--you have no support in the real world, you have to go back in. It's the only thing they know most often.
As for shunning, I remember studying in one of my classes, it was either sociology or child development--or both--about the shunning practices of other cultures, and throughout history. For example in Victorian England, as a form of punishment for troubled youths, whenever they would do something "wrong" they would be locked in a room for a time, then when let out they would be treated as if they did not exist. No one was allowed to talk to them or make any move to say the person even was alive. Many of the children wrote about this practice later that they would rather have been physically beaten then have to deal with this.
Also in some of the Pacific Islands I believe the worst offenders were cast out of their tribe and forced to live alone. If they tried to come back to the tribe, they were again treated as if they did not exist. Often times the "offender" would wander off and simply disappear (the notion being they killed themselves--how often have we heard of shunned JW's doing that?). The point being this was the WORST punishment you could inflict on someone. It's so true!

I don't think they are banning toys that have to do with fantasy--although a good christian would avoid such overtly fantasy laiden things like Harry Potter and the LOTR. These are just spiritistic. *shudders* Wow I still remember the party line!!
No in all seriousness. I think the article is objecting to the notion of hiding toys or santa myths because they are fantasy. Don't you remember their whole line about how lying to children damages their psyche. (No crap sherlock, just like lying to your kid about living paradise forever damages their psyche. The only difference is the kids grow out of it and the parents usually never do).
As for attacking toy-makers...it's an easy ploy. Many people in the "world" object to the commercialization of Christmas. It's an easy in that attacks a faceless entity that is easy to discredit. Oooh EVIL TOY MAKERS JUST TRYING TO MAKE A BUCK! Who can't get on that bandwagon?
I loved it...very action packed. Some of the battle scenes were great!
Spunky I have to agree-Legolas is a total hottie Elf boy...yum! Orlando Blom *drools*
But my favorite character, for obvious reasons of feminist rhetoric, has to be Eowyn. Must be that whole unrequited love bit that resonates with me...lol.
Peter Jackson has made three lovely films here, very visually pleasing.
i've been out of the org in mind for three months (formally for only two weeks) but i find that i often feel that old familiar impulse to supress myself if i start to say something that could be construed as negative to the organizaton.
do you still feel that?
like, i might hesitate to tell my neighbor that i didn't associate with my dad for six years because of the df/da policy.
I guess I am a little different in that I don't have a massive amount of rage toward the society. I think it's a religion that has hurt a lot of people, but lots of relgions and groups have done that. If it makes any sense, I don't think they deserve a distinction as being more hurtful than any other group of misguided people who do things on God's behalf.
This doesn't mean I don't speak up when I find fault with doctrine, or practice, or when those two things don't line up. It's hard for me, and in my feelings irrational, to have a sweeping hatred of EVERYTHING associated with JW's. And there are still people who are JW's that I respect and like. I just feel sorry for them for having such a hurtful way of life.
I dunno, I realize this isn't a popular view sometimes. I realize there are some people who were hurt a lot worse than I was by this organization. I think there are a wide range of emotions, and intensity of emotion based upon our personal experiences while we were in.
Eventually you are going to find your own level of rage, guilt, disgust, etc. Don't discredit any of your emotions, just try to understand why the way you feel the way you do and you are well on your way to recovering.
On a personal note, I've really enjoyed your posts Seattle, please keep them coming.
even when i was a jw, i enjoyed hearing holiday music.
some of it is religious, some of it is just "holiday cheer" music.
but it's fun to listen to, and sometimes those songs just stick in your head.. do you have any particular favorites this time of year?.
I like a lot of them, they are so damn catchy you can't help but hum them--especially if you work in retail!
I have to say tho, I dig Peggy Lee's "Rockin Around the Christmas Tree." Good Holiday cheese!! And of course anything Bing Crosby or Nat King Cole sings in the way of Christmas song is good stuff.
As for modern artists, Harry Connick Jr. has a new Christmas CD that's very good. And I love Destiny's Child's version of Chorus of the Bells. It's good alright!
And even tho it's not a true holiday song, they do play it a lot at Christmas, Louis Armstrongs "What a Wonderful World"
(Can you tell I work in retail?)
I am going to go see it this afternoon--I can't wait!!
I didn't watch them both back to back, but I did pop in the second one on Sunday night just to get me all hyper...which it did.
Maybe the reason some of you like "dorks" or "nerds' is because you still want to be with a Jehovah's Witness.
Hardly!
Like JWbot, there wasn't one JW guy I was attracted to...well that's not true, plenty of eyecandy but nothing of substance I wanted to settle down with. Empty drones mostly. I have no time for people who must first consult with a body of elders, my field service time card, or a stack of handbooks before he can ask me out.
Seattleniceguy--
Baby you're gettin me all hot and bothered now!! "Dork in shining armor" *drools*
okay, feel free to skip this message if you don't like long stories.
i'm in a writin' mood, so i thought i'd try my hand at entertaining the readers of the group.. a couple weeks ago i went downtown to check out an exhibit on sustainable technologies.
i was particularly impressed by a computer keyboard manufactured from carrot and celery fibers, using starch as a binder.
"With a steady stream of scripture that danced about in those favorite books of Daniel, Elijah, and Revelation, sprinkling in some Matthew 24 for a slight Jesus flavor, Yaakov made the case for the future of the state of Israel, the nearness of Armageddon ("I can already see things coming together!"), and the true meaning of the transfiguration."
I Love it!! You have quite a way with words...great images...fighting midgits--GOOD STUFF!
Not a waste of my time at all--really enjoyed reading it, thanks for sharing!
