What drove you? Love or Fear?
by fade_away inthis has probably been discussed here before, but i'm new so sue me.. i think the religion of jehovah's witnesses has been an amazing but tragic social experiment proving that the mind is most vulnerable to brainwashing when it's in an unhealthy state.
it seems to attract the bipolar, schizophrenic, depressive, and the paranoid.
it preys on negative emotions like sorrow and fear.

I agree with woody22! My thoughts exactly!
Used to be in fear, but now I focus on love. hmmm, go figure!

The Watchtower, a cult that worships the FDS and GB!
by VM44 inwith the continual emphasis that the watchtower places on following and trusting the fds and the gb in particular, one can only come to the following conclusion:.
the watchtower (and the jehovah's witnesses) are followers of a cult that worships the fds and the gb!.
essentially everything in the bible refers to the fds/gb.. everyone must listen to and follow what the gb says.. everyone must consume the "rich spiritual food" provided by the fds and the gb!.

FDS says - "No need to check our work. Besides, it will only make God angry."
by Crisis of Conscience inthough i no longer believe the fds is indeed appointed by god, i guess because of what has been taught to me all these years through the wtbts, i still make an effort to try and look at both sides.
and then i come across this number below, which is how i arrived at my title for this thread.

Here is the concluding part of the paragraph mentioned at the beginning...this is the proof????

OURVIEW OF THE “SLAVE”
We can benefit from this consideration. If we have once established what instrument God is using as his “slave” to dispense spiritual food to his people, surely Jehovah is not pleased if we receive that food as though it might contain something harmful. We should have confidence in the channel God is using. At the Brooklyn headquarters from which the Bible publications of Jehovah’s Witnesses emanate there are more mature Christian elders, both of the “remnant” and of the “other sheep,” than anywhere else upon earth.
REALLY???? (Banging head against the wall)

Notice what the article said about the Boreans just a few paragraphs before....WTH!

. And with what mental attitude did they pursue their studies? With a skeptical attitude, trying to prove Paul wrong? No, they were altogether unlike Paul’s critics on Mars Hill, for we read that they heard Paul’s testimony with “the greatest eagerness of mind.”—Acts 17:11, 32.
These Beroeans listened with a readiness, yes, an eagerness, to believe. Thus not only were they open-minded, but they were wanting to have this “good news” proved true. In fact, for a person to acquire faith he must have “the will to believe.” If he is determined not to believe, then no amount of evidence will convince him; for if a person looks for them he can always find excuses, plausible reasons for not accepting the accountability that belief will bring upon him. As the apostle Paul well said: “Faith is not a possession of all people.” (2 Thess. 3:2) But the Beroeans had the will to believe. They considered what they heard with a receptive frame of mind. As a result, “many of them became believers, and so did not a few of the reputable Greek women and of the men.”—Acts 17:12.
Jesus’ disciples wrote many letters to Christian congregations, to persons who were already in “the way of the truth.” (2 Pet. 2:2) But nowhere do we read that those brothers first, in a skeptical frame of mind, checked the Scriptures to make certain that those letters had Scriptural backing, that the writers really knew what they were talking about.

Were you SPANKED?
by unshackled indon't get all excited...i don't mean lastnight.
spankings were a regular occurence in my family, and don't think that was uncommon for born-in jws.
my parents loved the line "we spank you because we love you.
-
mythreesons
Yes...everyday and twice on Sundays!
Seriously though, Spanking were a normal part of life in our house until I was a teenager. Then it was mind games all the time! I was born-in too. "Spare the rod spoil the child" and "It hurts me more than you" and "I do this because I love you" were all common sayings from my parents.
edited for: also ears flicked at meetings, was knocked through a bathroom stall door, whipped with belts, 2 x 4's, switches (sticks), shoes, closed fist twice to the face, saw my dad kick my mom (he was the P.O.)....and I was "a good kid" that's what my parents told me.

Assembly/Convention Accounting
by dontplaceliterature injust having had my circuit assembly recently, i felt that the expenses in a watchtower-owned building seemed extremely over-inflated.
over $9000 for two days.
there were approximately 750-800 in attendance each day.

From what I remember, this is how it was explained during the "business meeting" during lunch.
They take the costs of maintaining the Assembly hall (ie..utilities, mortgage, supplies) for the year and divide it into the # of days on the weekends the A. H. is being used. Sometimes the hall is only used say 40 days a year. This gives the "amount per day" for the assembly. Then they also add in....plane tickets for "Bethel Speaker", expenses for C.O & D.O. & Bethel Speaker for the week, also expenses for any C.O. and D.O. apartments that the Circuit incurs, that way the home congregation doesn't have to foot the entire bill for the C.O. living on the premises.
Also, sometimes there is going to be renovations or remodeling of the Assembly Hall. They try to factor that in as well, so that the materials (labor = free) can be paid for without any financing. This is just from what I remember. They also add-in a donation to the "world-wide work" which I remember being approx. $500 per day for the Circuit I was in...(that was an amount the elders voted on).
So as far as I can tell and from my experience in the meetings. The prices for the assembly seems quite high, but in reality it's prett legit.

For born in's: how did your parents get you to answer up?
by highdose inmy mum used to smack me on the arm with a rolled up wt when it was my turn to answer, she said it was " to make sure you didn't forget!".
most of the time i ended up just yelling "ow!
" and rubbing my arm, but she never got the message.. another way was to scream at me non stop all the way home after the meetings if i hadn't answered up.

My father...Elder/PO...would take us to the bathroom and spank my brother and I if we had not had our hands up in the first few paragraphs. The standard was if we didn't answer we would be taken to the back (spanked) then once we were home we would get a lecture and the belt. Needless to say we were scared sh*tless of not answering.
As we grew older, the answers had to be in our "own words" if not we would still get the "standard" spankings at the hall and once we got home. That was probably from 4-6th grades. After that he had our spirits broken...I mean we were trained to become future elders and we answered all the time.
Grrrr! I really hate remembering that CRAP!

They really are pooping their pants over these latest "signs"...
by undercover ini've seen a few threads/posts where some of y'all have heard from jw contacts and how they've stepped up their 'the end is close' rhetoric because of the earthquake/tsunami in japan.
i usually take those things with a grain of salt.
there's always some jw whose cheese has slipped that reads prophecy into every little thing that happens.
-

I've been hearing it as well! It's so bad, the end is so close! A JW co-worker started in on me today. So, I just said, "that's why we have to make sure we are in the right place"...I just got a blank stare.

Rock on, Mr. Freeze! LOL I also picked up playing the guitar and it has been fun!
I'd have to say though that my kids are the biggest beneficiaries of our free time...they are in sports, we go to parks, go hiking, and I get to coach my boys teams. It's been great to be a father and just let the boys do what boys do.
