Higher Education: JW's view just one more reason to alienate others

my jw son just turned 18 and is about to graduate high school.

his grandfather (my dad), who has never been a jw, wants to encourage him to go to college and doesn't understand why his grandson isn't interested.. btw, my father graduated from harvard with a bs in physics, has a master's degree and is also a successful businessman.

in education and am a high school teacher.

Its true, crazy but true. Many witnesses are stuck in occupations like window and carpet cleaning. Not that there is anythig wrong with those occupations, but your options are limited when all you know is window cleaning.

In my congregation there are 7 people that have businesses doing carpets and or windows. Of these 7 - 5 are on the servant body in some form.

How open minded can someone be to higher education when they are stuck cleaning windows with no prospect of other employment? To validate their situation/choice they will oftentimes villify other peoples choice to pursue education. It's sad.

The funny thing is to watch all of these 7 businesses try to hustle for the same accounts. Looks like 7 ducks fighting each other for 5 pieces of stale bread at the park.

It just gets dumber and dumber.

My wife's reaction was pretty surprising. She did say " I can't believe they used that example". I caught her reading paragraph 12 about three times during the study. The ride home not much was said about it, aside from my comment that this can't be Gods org if they encourage an abused wife to stay with her abuser.

One sister made the comment during the meeting that this treatment was a blessing. Because it gave Selma a chance to develop Christian qualities. Funny enough is this sister is supposedly annointed and goes around with a holier than thou attitude.

Me: Understandable, but how would you react if "Elders Wife" came over afterwards, and listened to you describe how I had hit you and how you were crushed about it, and she said- "Wifes-Name". " put some makeup on those bruises. You need to stop feeling sorry for yourself. Who is trying to act like a Christian here, you or your husband? What you need to do is be more submissive, lovable, peaceable, and long suffering." Give him reasons to not hit you. Try not to make any points that will get him angry. It might take 5,10, 15 or 17 years but he will come around and see that you are something special."

Her: That's crazy. I would tell her to leave and then I would leave you. Who would be that stupid to give advice to stay with an abusive husband? There is no excuse to stay with someone who hits you.

Me: I agree, let's start our Watchtower.

2005 - The year the Society began its decline (without anyone noticing)!

i've just finished an article for randy over on freeminds.org, which i've submitted to him for review.

the article discusses the fact that the watch tower society is already in decline, and suggests the year 2005 as the turning point.

This is undeniably a great thread. Several have said that the proceeds from the sale of the Brooklyn properties will last the Society for decades. I disagree. They are looking at a large building project in upstate New York (Warwick and Ramapo) that needs a large amount of capital, they still have as many C/O's and D/O's still operating, many of them with health problems, they still have missionaries and special pioneers that they are paying for. They also still have 98 Branches still operating with the associated staff and costs.

Add to the above the settlements for pedophile cases or other liabilities, the loss of revenue from the governmental banning of the work in Russia and Eastern Bloc nations, and finally the increased costs for printing of literature that no one reads. All of these things take an incredible amount of money.

At this rate they will continue to scale back operations in a desperate attempt to stop the financial hemmoraging. I think they see the writing on the wall. Look for more changes to printing operations and personnel and significant doctrinal adjustments as 2014 approaches.

"Brothers and Sisters, are we not glad to be eyewitnesses to the prohecy that is mentioned in Isaiah, where Jehovah promised that he "would speed it up in his own time". Truly things are now speeding ahead to the glorious finale soon to come. (wait for applause to end)

Whats the real reason men want to become elders?

Because that is what is expected of you. The "career path" of a born- in who is under a microscope generally leans towards pioneering out of high school, becoming a MS at 19-20, kissing butt for 6-8 years and then appointment as an elder. Don't underestimate the pressure that is put upon these young men. The congregation and Circuit overseers will groom and encourage young servants to reach out to be elders. I think that the intense pressure comes from the congregations desire to see a "success" come out from the young ones in the hall. Most kids split after they are out of school. This puts more pressure on the ones who stay to become the superstars that their peers weren't.

I know for myself, I didn't want authority, power, and prestige as an elder. I just wanted approval and acceptance from the people that I had known my entire life.

My son was murdered today

i have been on this site daily, almost from its beginning, since i left the jws in 2001, but i have been more of a reader than a poster, as you can see from my post count.

i know few here know me, although i know many of you through reading your posts.

maybe it is not right to ask for support, when i generally stay quietly in the background of this forum, but i want only to speak a human misery of the deepest kind.
