'Hellfire' is supposed to be TORTURE....FOREVER.
Not a chance. Not biblical, and not in line with the love that Christ taught us by word and example.

that they (trinity) are burning billions alive...forever?
with worms that live forever gnawing on them?.

free will could have existed quite nicely with a myriad of options available for these free-will entities to freely choose from, with all of these being equally good..
Just an added point from what Aguest said- Didn't God give man rule over all the animals on the earth? (Genesis 1:28) Doesn't that make the treatment of animals our responsibility, and their suffering our fault?

rev 20;4-10 - says those who were true witnesses, did not get mark of beast on hand or forhead, did not worship it's image, came to life and ruled as kings and priest for 1,000 years, the rest of the dead did not come back to life until the thousand years were ended.
happy and holy are those of the first resurrection, they will be kings and priests of god and of the christ and rule 1,000 years.
then as soon as thousand years ended, satan misleads those on earth, and when they surround the camp, fire destroys them.
What would you guys have talked about if the Romans decided that Revelation was not to be part of their Bible Canon?
Maybe less people would have been around who put all the focus on what happens after death, and simply concentrated on living by Jesus teachings and example out of sincere love for God and mankind. Maybe people would have concentrated more on the here and now, rather than deciphering symbols in a prophetic book... (not to mention which parts are supposed to have been, are, and are to come)
Or not.
Many people seem to be determined to live according to what will happen after they die.
As for armageddon, many people seem to miss the whole point about not knowing when the end is coming. If we live according to the love of God and man that Christ taught, then the end doesn't matter to us. If we're changing our ways solely out of fear of punishment, then how can our love for fellow man be considered sincere?
Sort of like this: In many restaurants, everyone gets all crazy when the health inspectors are due to be coming around. Clean! Take temperatures. Follow all safety guidelines! and all just in case an inspector comes today. Then, after the inspection and the pass, all the bad habits rear up again until the next time. None of these people were following safety guidelines out of concern for the health and safety of others - only to avoid the trouble that comes from failing an inspection - so people will continue to get hurt or sick.
Does that make any sense, or do I sound like an idiot?

....or of any beliefs that require faith in an unseen god or gods?.
if humans could go back and see the primordial soup struck by lightning (or whatever it was that actually started it) and could personally observe that there were primitive man-like creatures that spread across the world coming out of africa (or whatever really happened) and that there wasn't a garden of eden ever or a worldwide flood ever.... .....would that allow some of the most staunch believers to put aside their beliefs?.
if men could go back and look for jesus and see what he really was (or was not or even if he was at all) and others could do the same for abraham, buddha and confucious and mohammad and joseph smith and c.t.
I am not talking about Israelite standards. I am talking about the supposedly all-knowing, omnibenevolent GOD! People had/have horrible standards, Israelite or Canaanite or whoever. But worshipping the one above that means that He should be indeed above that.
Sorry, OTWO - and you're right. He should indeed be above that. I think He was; I just don't think the Israelites were capable of understanding what He expected of them. Perhaps they were just better equipped to listen than any of the other nations surrounding them. As we grow, so does our ability to understand.
I don't believe in selective acceptance of the Bible. I could go as far as the creation story being allegory, but beyond that if God doesn't tell us what's true and what's not true, then we have men to mislead us into believing what God meant. It is supposed to be God's book. It says he sanctioned such stuff. Either it is truth or it is lies, either God didn't mind taking the blame or God lies.
God told us what was true through Jesus. We should be capable of reasoning everything else that follows based on the teachings and example that Christ gave us.
I understand that this doesn't mean anything if someone doesn't believe in God at all. These are just my thoughts.

1 john 4:2 - whoever does not love does not know god, because god is love.. .
what does the statement "god is love" mean?
well quite simply that god = love.
He showed us what love is. I don't have to be a Greek scholar to know he was wonderful and if he says that he reflects his father, then I love his Father
NotaCaptive - This is how I learned to love God. When I was younger, I used to think that I loved God. I used to say that I loved God. But I didn't know God, and it was more of a fear about what would happen if I said I didn't love Him. Then, as I was learning about Jesus, and coming to love Him... it was like a click in my head:
Jesus loves his Father! I love Jesus; believe him to be a good man, the son of god, the truth and the living word/reflection of God. I respect and believe in Jesus judgment. If He considers his Father worthy of respect and love, then God must be worthy of respect and love.
I loved God, through Jesus, right at that moment.
That was when I started paying closer attention to the things that Jesus said were misconstrued about the laws of God in the OT. And I started looking at things with new eyes. Eyes of love and faith in Christ; and not eyes of fear.
I guess that's the beginning of how I got here.
Your post struck a chord, and I just thought I'd share.

i'm trying to fade away, but i sometimes find myself in discussions or arguments with jw family/friends/white haired virgin elders.
now, i usually have them beat on things but i'm not very experienced, so i was thinking if you guys could help me put together a list of completely unanswerable questions to pose to my jw friends/family/elders so they can stop bugging me.
if i keep asking them questions they simply cannot answer, then they might leave them alone.
Welcome, Forbidden Fruit - There are a lot of people here who will answer your questions, and who can relate to strategies in fading.
You should read through jwfacts.com to find hard to answer questions.

lol.... have fun with this thread... it's sick if it's true.. http://www.viceland.com/int/v14n10/htdocs/yo1.php.
Not sure if I believe this, but its disgusting if it is true. The first few comments after the article are just as disgusting as well. And then the comments rise into some extremely educated 'retard' name calling.
okay, so i confess to loving the tv series, supernatural.
i'm not all big into the whole angel/demon/armageddon theme (and yes, i recognize the irony that the past two seasons has mainly been about this theme).
i love the show because i love to watch the humor and the dynamics in the relationship between the brothers.
I liked the story Blondie, thanks! I loved that it portrayed people burying dead bodies and children. How could you call yourself worthy of Paradise, and then not be driven insane by the bodies of innocent children in the streets? Of anyone, actually.
MsDucky - My husband started watching with me (secretly - can't let his friends know) because of the music.

I could attempt to design a way to make the world better. But I cannot envision the consequences to all of my design even in the present; much less a thousand/ten thousand years from now. Even experts on child rearing flip/flop many of their views after they see the effects a generation later. At best, I think we can see a few steps in advance by using reason, cause and effect... but we cannot see the benefits and consequences for everyone and certainly not for eternity.
If we're assuming God (an eternal and intelligent designer) exists for the nature of this discussion, then He has vast amounts of knowledge and wisdom to draw upon - about everything in the universe (including the hearts and needs of ALL men, women and children.)
If our free will was limited, how free is that will, really?
