yes, research narcissistic personality disoder. It runs in my family. That is one disorder (I'm guessing among many) that will be attracted to this religion.

The Specialness Of Being A Jehovah's Witness
by minimus ini figured out why many people become jws or remain in the religion.
they actually believe that they are special!
they look down on everyone else because they alone are god's people.

How many people on here have low self-esteem?
by Chemical Emotions ini do, so i was just curious.. i know the org tends to attract/cause/contribute to people having low self-esteem, so i figure a lot of people must have it as bad or worse than me..

Well, I almost started this with an apology for replying to three threads in a row, so I would say yes.
I think low self-esteem has more to do with the kind of parents that are attracted to the JW religion or choose to stay in it (if they were born in it). I have low self-esteem when it comes to real world accomplishments because being raised in the relligion is such a handicap to being a successful person.
I used to have very low self esteem when I was a young adult (early twenties), which led me to relationships with abusive, unattractive men. The way I was raised I thought I had no say in what happened to me. If I met someone really grose but they seemed familiar, I felt obligated to be in a relationship with them - especially if they used any kind of emotional blackmail.) That happened 3 times. It was such a grose experience that I'm a celibate person now.

Atheists..... throwing the baby out with the bath water ?
by snare&racket inthis saying permeates this forum with higher frequency than most.
despite being an open atheist amongst lots of religious people in my life, i have never been accused of doing this and i have never heard this saying attributed to my choice... appart from here.. i thought it would be best to clarify why i (and i assume others) decided to leave the bible behind after leaving the wt society.. realising the wt society was wrong desroyed my world, for me it meant so much.
i had given so much to it too, it just had to be true!

Do you really think there is a big man in the sky? Religion is superstition.

Although I had one friend I talked to at each meeting which was a life saver. (She was the closest to my age.) Although, she was a little odd and sometimes she wouldn't want to talk but usually we spent time together.

I disassociated during the meetings. You couldn't tell from the outside. I was one of those kids who was dragged to the back to be hit regularly at each meeting as a young child. By the time I was a teen I was very skilled at sitting there disassociated. (Of course I was too old at that age for my parents to get away with beating me at the hall.) I didn't learn was diassociation was until many years later. I'm only mentioning it here in case others may realize they might have used the same coping skill. It's pretty interesting. Of coure, I have no respect or love for my parents but I find the coping skills humans develop interesting.

This is just my personal opinion and maybe there's a grain of truth in it. It's my opinion that many ex-JWs focus too much on how corrupt the religion is. It is corrup but there are always going to be organizations like that. The real issue, in my opinion, is why did a person join? For ex, my parents only joined while I was a minor. Some people may think it's great they left, but they have the same personalities that wanted to raise their children like that. In my particular case, both of my parents have narcissistic personality disorder. They're even worse now because NPD gets worse as people get older. I look at why my family is so abusive in the first place. Blaming the religion feels like scapegoating the real, deeper issues where denial could be really active.
Ok, that's just one person's opinion.

I cannot believe my father called me to ask this!
by serenitynow! inso my father, a jw bum who abandoned us when we were children to be with his pioneer whore, called me tonight and left a message.
this is surprising because i have not seen or spoken to him for a couple of years, other than to leave a message a couple of weeks ago to tell him that i had to hospitalize my sister for being suicidal.. i found out about a week ago that one of his very good friends, a brother whose family used to go to the hall with us and used to be close to when we were children is dying in the hospital after having a couple of strokes and a heart attack.
they've been talking about taking him off of the ventilator for a few days.

This post isn't going to be particularly enlightening or anything. Narcissists lack empathy and are stunted at a very, very young age of development in that regard. Everything I read in professional books about dealing with a narcissist is that it's best to get away and stop contact because they're always harmful. It's their nature. Some people choose limited contact, but there are more risks with limited contact. Our society makes it a taboo to stop contact with toxic or abusive or sociopathic parents. Even Stalin's son was criticized for saying bad things about his father. (If I'm thinking of the correct totalitarian leader. It was one of them.) Also, I have read that narcissists are attracted to religions/cults that make them the chosen ones and everyone else punishable or bad. Of course, because it makes the narcissist feel superior. I think the JW organization is very attractive to narcissists.

Does anyone else have parents who were only JWs until you became an adult?
by myusername inmy parents joined when i was born and left when i became an adult.
they're very controlling people.
i recommend the book 'if you had controlling parents' because i think people raised as jws will relate to it.

I recommend the book 'If You Had Controlling Parents' because I think people raised as JWs will relate to it. Although, every single person's story in the book ended when they went away to college. That freedom never comes for JW children. They're never expected to start their own lives and make their own choices. Anyway, it seems to me some people only join the organization so they can have a socially acceptable reason to be extraordinarily controlling with their children.

@VanillaMocha73, elders abuse their families too. That's probably why they ignore it.

this time i actually covered it with other reading material, with the thought that i'd be helping people to stay away from it.
