i have never been a jehovah's witness, but i've dated someone who is and i have a few clients who are.. my comment and question is this, i've noticed that witnesses who aren't even active get very defensive when asked a question or a comment is made about the religion.. did any of you find yourself before you left getting this way when people asked you about the religion.. restorebeauty.

The comment about the ones who are wavering being the most defensive is spot on. I recently spoke with a girl who didn't know I was an ex. It came out that her mom was a JW and that she at 22 had left (not baptized) because she had no friends etc.

I made a comment to get things going about how rich the Society was. She was stunned and said "oh no... it's not to make money or anything like that." I ended up letting a few stats out and she started to deny them, but you could tell she didn't know enough to either defend her wavering faith or to be knowledgable enough to know the facts. I let it slip about Dateline etc and she was quite stunned. I made comments about them being nice people, but "too bad they don't know the facts about their history", to which she stammered to defend, but realized she knew nothing of it either.

It bothered me that she defended them so much, but she was ostracized for being fat and unpopular in her words... she craved acceptance, but even they wouldn't take her.

It made me realize that even for me 5 or 6 years ago after being DFed, I would still defend JWs to an extent as far as "not being a cult" and being misrepresented in the media etc. It took time for that to fade and to be more balanced about it. I will still defend them when people have idiotic statements to make, but will equally expose the real problems.

JWs already have an aversion to zeroes. Imagine the reaction if you submitted a service report like this:

What gets me in their comments is that they are so well trained in Thoecratic New Language. Brothers are referred to as "loyal", apostate signs are "deceptive". So many adjectives are tossed about to qualify everything. The devotion to the "earthly organization" is absolutely astounding. It's a well packaged product that Society has sold people - you are special, you are part of a special organization on earth, it is God's visible organization, but because men are involved, there will be some imperfection. It's not until one is able to do an honest examination without the influence of the organization that you can see there is no basis for the claim of being approved by God. Nothing.

I can sympathize with them to a limited extent. But statements to the effect that these "scandals" will make honest-hearted worldly people look into things and that it will actually add to the ranks of the brothers and sisters, are so naive as to cause one to pause and reflect as to how nonsensical such statements are and regret ever following such a course of non-reasoning in the past as a JW.

As a small aside, it really bugs the hell out of me that they use Star Trek characters as their personas - seems it's ok to "boldy go where no man has gone before" but don't "boldly go out in front of the Organization". Seems to me an honest JW could enjoy the show but wouldn't completely embrace the mythology of other worlds that flies in the face of Earth having been a special creation.

WHICH MEETING WAS THE MOST BORING?

the more meetings you go to the more drivel you hear.

elder's meetings were terrible because all you ever did was gossip about how everyone wasn't doing this or that.

meetings for field service sucked.....enough said on that.

I have to second the motion on the Service Meeting. I hated those "local needs" parts where they were coming down heavy on something that happened. You could connect the dots and figure out what had gone on re: wrongdoing. I remember feeling guilty about stuff that I hadn't even done as they came down so hard in trying to make people crack. It made me ill to my stomach.

Ever lie on your service reports?

did anybody out there lie on their service reports that they maintained the 'national average' when in reality you got .005 hours of service in any given month?

i magically always used to always get "10" hours out in service, while nobody ever saw me at the groups, no one ever caught on, or seemed not to -- maybe they just didn't give a shit.. i always lied so i could keep my microphone 'privelidges' -- that being, the privelidge to walk around at the back of the hall giving my deflated ass a break from those awful chairs they had.

Never lied about my time - usually I was between 8 and 12 hours a month. I now know when the elders sometimes asked me to boost my hours a little and set an example it was because a bunch of dubs like you guys were artificially raising the congregation average!

That said, I've wondered if I could concoct a plan to "go back" and get reinstated, put in lots of field service hours (on paper of course), THEN fade without falling for the trick question. Anyone actually ever tried this?

today i had my jeep towed into the shop..i dreaded the ride in with the driver (im extremly shy).

but we ended up haveing a great conversation about what vehicle i should buy next.. what a perfect person to ask cuz of his job.

he said "dont get another jeep they roll too easy and they catch on fire.".
