Funny, I never thought of this. This is not true for all languages. In my language they say "sister/brother last name" during the meeting but after an before the meeting they use the first names. Sometimes they say "sister/brother last name" jokingly because it sounds so "serious".
I believe it might have something to do with culture?

There's been a lot of research by scientists and sociologists on this so caution is the word here.
flipper do you have any source for this claim? I just find it boring and ridiculous sitting through a meeting after I woke up. You see through the manipulation and lies, I don't think it has any negative effect other than that you might get irritated. Once you know TTATT I think you are pretty much immune to their deception.
This is of curse my personal experience so some source to your claim would be very interesting.

Regarding giving false hopes to you daughter, I think if this is a risk. Going could be a bad idea, some have had relatives reconnect with them when they realized that they will never come back. It will be a setback in this regard if you give your daughter hope.
Also, if you decide to go I would suggest as many others have. That you make it clear to your friend why you are going so there wont be any misunderstanding or any idea that you are approving their decision to become reinstated.
But as I said before, I don't see any reason to fear the JW indoctrination after learning about TTATT as many of the other posters here do. If you think you can help your friend by going to the meeting I think you could do it, but remember to include the effect this will have on your daughter before make a decision.

Judicial committee letter to elders
by Israel Ricky Gonzales inwarning: this is rather lengthy.
i thought i would post this information that i took with me to my judicial committee.
the elders promised that we would talk about everything that was bothering me, yet, we ended up talking about less than 10% of it.

After he went into the kingdom hall, the presiding overseer and the elders of the congregation asked him while he was in the back room and said: “Do you believe in the governing body?” In reply Ricky said to them: “I will also ask you one thing. If you tell me, then I will also tell you if I believe in the governing body: Will only Jehovah's witnesses survive Armageddon? Yes or no?” But they began to reason among themselves, saying: “If we say, ‘Yes,’ he will say to us, ‘What about all the people who never got the chance to hear the good news, and what about the children?’ But if we say, ‘No,’ he will say to us, ‘Why then do you preach? Why do you claim that you are doing a life saving work if they will survive Armageddon anyway?’ ” So they answered Ricky: “We do not know how Jehovah will judge.” He, in turn, said to them: “Neither am I telling you if I believe in the governing body. -

People have been reinstated to save loved ones from the ORG. If you want to attend a few meetings to support and help a loved one I find that very kind.
Hope you manage to plants some seeds while you are at it ;)

The talk and the "attitude" towards inactive once where: be kind and gentle with them. They don't need to be told that what they did was bad, they know this already. We need to help them back with love. Showed a video of how a inactive one was afraid to attend the memorial because she thought she would be received badly and then when she did go she was hugged and love bombed. People where admonished to seek out and help "weak once".
Don't think there was a lot of porn mentioned either, not much of that when Jesus lived ;) Think it came up briefly a few times, not sure.

that's why, as you will notice, it has that new thread smell.

When you perform mitzvah you "bring a little of G-d" into the world
Why would this be important to a secular Jew since he does not believe in said deity? Or wouldn't it?

It's not about identifying with points of doctrine or making claim to or denying belief in this or that concept. It's about doing, responding, living, many enduring as a Jew.
It's the opposite. It's want you DO, not what you believe.I understand what you mean by this.
As you said earlier; it is the values that define you as a Jew, or as you said in this post; what you DO.
But no matter what you define "Jewish" as, my question will still remain (maybe in some other form).
[insert practice/belief/value here]"is the point to Judaism"
If being Jewish is referring to:
Your values
What you do
How you dress
Your religious views
Or something else, the question is still going to be:
What about someone who is born into the tribe and who does not practice/identify with said thing?
If the answer is yes he is still a Jew, that means that the answer you gave is not really what makes someone a Jew since they can be so without said thing.
If the answer is no he is not a Jew, that means that there is a distinction between what makes some Jewish by birth and by practice/beliefs/values.
Which was the original question I asked you; what is the distinction? And that would also be the answer to the question.
Since I got the impression you don't think there is any distinction I am wondering if there is a third option that I have overlooked? Or you are incorrect and there is a distinction.
Do you understand my question now? It has nothing to do with how hard it might be for me to grasp the idea of a religion without beliefs or doctrine or even belief in God, I can entertain all these ideas.
We could do the same to philosophy if it was a tribe; what is the difference between someone born into it and someone practicing it? Philosophy has no God, no religious rules or rites, no leader, no religious beliefs. I don't want nor need any of these things to be present in Judaism, my question is outside that entire argument.
Hope this clears it up!

Maybe this will help:
CHRISTIANS...What you believe is what matters.
JEWS...What good you bring into the world is what matters.
CHRISTIANS...Your personal salvation is a priority.
JEWS...Bringing healing to where it is needed is the priority.
CHRISITANS...If you believe in the wrong doctrines it can cost you eternal life.
JEWS...Beliefs hold no power to give you something you don't possess or have the power to achieve on your own.
CHRISTIANS...You are more enlightened with your convictions than that of others and must convince or even bring down those who disagree with your views.
JEWS...You are enlightened by all you meet for all are created in G-d's image (so to speak), and you must protect and fight for the right of freedom of conscience for all.Can you still be a Jew if you don't identify with any of these points?
