I do not think Justmom is an Ex-JW. Either current one or never was. I do not believe a real X-JW could lack that much empathy even if I agreed with the spirit (definately not the logic or theological argument) of the original post.

I would think it is a legal requirement to give any one a chance to claim the bride or more likely the groom. Probably comes from back in the days before Facebook, when a truck driver could have 3 families in 3 different states. If someone in the audience knew one of the parties was spoken for, this would be the time to share that information. Just my guess.. ahhhhh the good ol days.

it struck me, as i guess it has a lot of people, that there are so many threads from both americans and the rest of us that seem to descend into america bashing.
i thought it might be quite nice to have a thread solely (and i mean solely - if this just turns negative i will call foul) on what we think is great about america.
as a brit who has lived and been over a number of times there are many parts about america that i think are great and thought is would be healthy to have a positive thread for a change.. so a starter for ten (with a few gross generalisations thrown in):.

a friend of mine has apparently pre-registered and pre-paid the registration fee for some "life enrichment boot camp".. from what i gather, it's something started by dr phil.. jim carroll was a trainer under dr phil and was inspired to create the life enrichment boot camps and marriage seminars.
the self improvement seminar is an intense life changing seminar that is the perfect place to increase self-esteem, value and worth.
more and more counselors and ministries are trusting the life enrichment seminar (dr. phil boot camp style) and marriage seminar boot camp styles to provide positive healing.
Old Thread I know, but considering Jim Carroll and David Bishop are personal friends of mine I feel I should say something.
First, if you go to LEBC looking for some sort of absolution or an infalliable authority (sound familar?) then Jim, David, and LEBC is going to disappoint you every time. It is not a cult or religion it is just an accelerated 4 day seminar/workshop for people that want to improve their relationships. That being said I have seen more than one X-JW go through and get rid of a lot of baggage. Anyone want to guess what most of it centered around?
Second, a lot of the things you have said about Jim and David are based on truth. They have always been upfront and never hid any of the unsavory parts of their lives or claimed to be anything more than what they are. In fact, being imperfect reinforces the mission that they are there to just help people process their baggage and find their own answers. They never put themselves in a position of being an "authority" in any ones life or even in self-help or psychology. They run a program where the attendees do the hard work, which is why it is called boot camp.
Personally, the program helped me a lot when I was struggling a few years ago. I have seen it help a lot of others since. It is not for everyone and that is ok as well.
Last, it is not financed through an "MLM" system at all. People that went through it and got something out of it are encouraged to refer others and yes there is some costs associated with staff, rental of the space, equipment, etc. None of which is cheap. If you compare what they "ask" for compared to what other similar programs "charge" you will see the difference. About 1,000 people have been going through the program every year for almost 10+ years now. If someone, somewhere wasn't getting something out of it, I would think it would have dried up by now.
P.S. If anyone would like to go and comment, review or give their opinion about LEBC (which out co-ersion or input from me) on here then I have a challenge. You are more than welcome to attend as my guest (I will pay any fees). You won't owe a nickel except your travel and boarding of course (unless you want to crash on my floor next to my dog LOL).

Just read you previous posts. Sounds like he has a hard time with boundaries and understanding that it is ok to pursue his wants as long as he is being responsibile and honorable. I don't think he needs it explained what a good or interesting opportunity is, or that working at the gas station is probably not going to be a lifelong source of fulfillment. It sounds like his issues are with boundaries and dealing with authority. Spending time with his uncle might be good.
I live in Dallas and I would guess I am about smack dab in the middle of your age and his. PM me if I can ever do anything to help out. Community College is very affordable here and if he sticks around he might enroll and find the spark.
As someone that was a 20 year old guy not toooooooo long ago, he probably is still trying to figure out what makes him spark versus what makes those who have raised him spark. I would just encourage any passion he might have at the moment, even if it was running a convience store. We know how far $8 an hour goes, but maybe he doesn't. Sometimes, that kind of thing really gets a young man motivated after a while.
Was he raised JW? It might explain his adversion to college, issues standing up to authority and acting in his self-interest, and also why he thinks he should be content with a low paying job. There is so much programming that a born-in never get's rid of completely that converts never understand. This is a big difference between me and my sister and my parents still. I have been dealing with these same issues my whole life.
