  Good for you, ssn587! I would love to have been there and watched you in action lol. I wonder how that JW felt in retrospect after the event. The incident must have unsettled him, being shown up for being an ignorant a**hole in front of so many people, just for obeying WT rules. You were polite and courteous yet managed to get your point across regarding how two faced the religion is. With a bit of luck it will jolt that JW into thinking for himself and realising how ridiculous this shunning rule is. I hope more ex JWs follow your example. Well done !!

  The shunning policy is ridiculously cruel and inhumane.

  Absolutely! I have always felt shunning was utterly wrong even as a Dub.

  Me and Hubby have been DA'd over 20 years but we talk to any JW we happen to bump into and so far nobody has outright shunned us to our faces.

  You jolly well hold your head up high. You are not a second class citizen and have nothing to feel ashamed about. You have a perfect right to speak to anyone you meet. Even if a JW tries to publicly shun you, do what other posters have said, give them a smile and say Hi, how are you? If they refuse to acknowledge you, they will be the ones to look rude, ignorant and stupid to any onlookers, while you will have nothing to reproach yourself about. How could anyone condemn you for being friendly?!

  Anyway, I sincerely hope you won't have to deal with too many shunners.

  for those that don't know, it means mind your own business.

  i often wonder if the borg have any clue as to what that really means.

  it's bad enough that they stick thier noses into your personal beliefs, but it's even worse when they nose into your personal business that has nothing to do with belief.. case in point: my mother would get into my face anytime she found out about any run-ins i had with traffic cops, be it speeding, using a radar detector, fender benders, etc.

  Yes, you are right. What our adult children get up to is none of our business and they are responsible for their own actions, but this in itself doesn't stop us Moms worrying!! It is only natural to interfere if we know something is wrong, especially if we feel our kids are doing something that could put them in danger like driving recklessly.

  I'm sure it relates to her thorough indoctrination with Borg teachings.

  Yes, we know the Borg indoctrinates the parents into believing it is their right to control their childrens' lives so that they don't do anything that will bring the precious Organisation into disregard. Maybe your Mom is worried about appearances in the Congregation, but regardless of that I still think she is just behaving like any normal caring Mom, regardless of religion.

  We Moms can be irritating, interfering, nosey old bats sometimes, but it's only because we love you

  However, I could fill a book with stories of control within the Congregation when I was growing up in the '60s. As the daughter of an Elder my life was everybody's business! Even my Mom's Bible Study seemed to think she had the right to dictate to me who my friends should be. Believe me, it was a nightmare!!

  I could never believe in or worship a god (Jehovah) who was way way more cruel and unloving than I a mere human could ever think of being.

  God of love? The God the bible speaks about even allowed his own son to be tortured and killed. Who could watch such a thing happen, especially if they had the means to stop it at any given time! I doubt there is anyone on this board who would be able to do that - and in the name of love? I've never been able to get my head round that.

  I was taught the God of the Old Testament and New Testament are one and the same. Therefore, to think such a God (and Creator of us all) could force some of his children to brutally murder the others, ripping open the stomachs of pregnant women, bashing babies' brains out against stones and raping young girls that had just watched their parents being horrifically killed, all the while threatening the 'chosen' children with death themselves if they did not carry out his sadistic instructions to the letter, then I feel much happier and safer being an athiest!

  The bible revealed 'almighty god' is the personification of a cruel despot. If we treated our children like he treats his children we would be locked up and never paroled.

  I think this comment sums it all up perfectly!

  When a religion consistantly considers it's own teachings and literature from 30 years ago to be incorrect and apostate, and yet the source they claim to rely on - the bible - hasn't changed, then we can make a fair guess that whatever they are teaching NOW will be considred incorrect and apostate 30 years from now.

  Great point! I can remember back in the 1960s we were told to get rid of all literature written by Russell and Rutherford as many of the old teachings were incorrect and misleading and we now had 'New Light'. Well, guess what, much of the 'New Light' we were taught back in the '60s, and even as recent as the '90s, is now - wait for it - incorrect and misleading as we now have 'New Light'. Anyone holding on to the old teachings being branded apostates.

  I wonder what the 'New Light' will be in 2030 when the brothers are told to disregard many of this decade's teachings for being incorrect and apostate

  do you remember correcting everyone who would ask you where you go to church.

  the jw reply was usually something like....we don't go to a church we go a kingdom hall.

  jw's just have to be different you know.. yesterday i went to my citys museum.

It is a non denominational term and used to describe a gathering of Christian people for worship, which is what JWs are supposed to be, so why do they get so uptight about the public referring to Kingdom Halls as churches as if it is something offensive?

  if i want to forgive someone, it's not necessary for me to punish anyone.

  it makes absolutely no sense to me, why an almighty, loving god would punish his son, for an offense that someone else committed.

  I couldn't agree more, leavingwt. Believers can quote scriptures and provide explanations till the cows come home but I will never be able to accept why all that unimaginable suffering and eventual death of an innocent man needed to take place. Sorry, but that's how I feel.

  Are Animals Resurrected?

  the jws visited me again today, and i have to admit i was surprised when i asked them if they thought animals would be resurrected.. now i ask this question from a lot of different religions.

  most often i ask if people think they have spirits, but since jws don't believe people have them, why bother asking about animals?.

  but i did ask about resurrection, which is the next best thing...i guess.. to my surprise they said no!

  I know the atheists here are going to deep six the idea right off the bat, so this question is for believers -- either JWs or others.

  Sorry, I know that as a naturalistic evolutionist who hangs on David Attenborough's every word, I have no right to comment on this topic but it really gets to me that believers who feel they are made in 'God's image', are so superior to animals that they really think they have a divine right to a resurrection when animals don't. There has been much injustice done to the animal world as a whole over the centuries due to this attitude. Anyone who has been close to animals will know that even rodents have personalities, can feel emotions such as affection and loyalty and even grief. There have been animals who have given their lives to save a human. Why should believers feel these animals should be denied a resurrection just because they are not human?

  HOW TO GIVE A CAT A PILL

  1) Pick cat up and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.

  2) Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.

  3) Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away.

  4) Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right fore-finger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten.

  5) Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call spouse from garden.

  6) Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously.

  7) Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines and vases from hearth and set to one side for gluing later.

  8) Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force mouth open with pencil and blow down drinking straw.

  9) Check label to make sure pill not harmful to humans, drink glass of water to take taste away. Apply band-aid to spouse's forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.

  10) Retrieve cat from neighbor's shed. Get another pill. Place cat in cupboard and close door onto neck to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon. Flick pill down throat with elastic band.

  11) Fetch screwdriver from garage and put cupboard door back on hinges. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus jab. Throw Tee-shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom.

  12) Ring fire brigade to retrieve cat from tree across the road. Apologize to neighbor who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat. Take last pill from foil-wrap.

  13) Tie cat's front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining table, find heavy duty pruning gloves from shed. Push pill into mouth followed by large piece of fillet steak. Hold head vertically and pour 2 pints of water down throat to wash pill down.

  14) Get spouse to drive you to the emergency room, sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearm and removes pill remnants from right eye. Call furniture shop on way home to order new table.

  15) Arrange for RSPCA to collect cat and ring local pet shop to see if they have any hamsters.
