in past posts i have placed god on trial by questioning two issues: 1) the issues in the graden of eden, and the severe punishment of the entire human race for a very minor act of eating fruit.
2) god ordering the extermination of entire cities, including every last man, woman, child, baby, and even livestock.. results: the result on this forum have be mixed as expected, but showed a range from suport to tryuionmg top explain these events with reasoning, logic, or plausibilities.
some felt that i might be losing my faith.
Hi all-
I certainly cannot explain God's nature or actions. There are things in the Bible that occur that trouble me as well. There are certain sections in the Old and New Testament that I wonder about as to how to interpret.
One thing that helps and many of you may have done this already is to research how the books that are in the Old and New Testament were chosen. The New Testament in particular has a very interesting history as to how those books were chosen to be placed in the Bible canon. And, it appears to me, that there definitely is a "canon within the canon" so to speak because there are a lot of books like Revelation, James, Jude, etc. that were controversial but made the canon anyway.
In addition, many fundamentalists groups take the position that "since the Bible is true the Gospel is true". In reality, the books of the New Testament were written over a period of time along with many other writings of the early church. The church did not come to some kind of an agreement on which books to place into the New Testament Canon until around 400AD.
In any case, the purpose of the New Testament Canon was to demonstrate to people what the norm of the Christian faith is and to fight against different heresies throughout the years past and those that would come in the future.

Hi Gang-
I had a 20lbs. Maine Coon named Sugar. He eventually died of complications due to diabetes. (I named him Sugar before he got diabetes not afterwards.)
In any case, I used to give him insulin shots every morning. He was my buddy. When he was a kitten, he hated it when my wife would get in bed with me while I was petting him. If she tried to get in bed with me he would try to attack her. I thought it was funny but my wife did not care for it too much.
Sugar was smart. I miss him a lot.

in view of the mood on the board today, i'll try to make at least some of you laugh with a memory i had this morning...... i'm driving the kid to school, and she sees a vanity plate that says "jericho.
" "mom, was jericho a person or a place?".
wham!
Hi all-
I think that individuals who become JWs as adults do not have the slightest idea what it is like to be a JW as a child. My parents converted to the dubs when they were in their mid-twenties I think.
In any case, I was about five years old at the time that they converted so I as raised in it. I was routinely tortured by other kids at school until I finally got a growth spurt around 14 and got big.
In any case, when I was 11 years old, my sixth grade teacher was giving a lecture on citizenship. One of my obnoxious bully classmates raised his hand and proceeded to tell the teacher that I had told him that it was wrong to fight for ones' country by joining the military.
The teacher looked at me and proceeded to scold me in front of the entire class for those comments which my classmate had said that I had told him previously. Here scolding ended with the statement, "It is because of people like you that my brother got both of his legs blown off in Vietnam."
Later in the day, another teacher came up to me and told me that I needed to apologize to her colleague for whatever it is that I said during her citizenship lecture because it had really offended her. Mind you, I had not said a thing but my views at the time (actually my parents' views at the time) had just been expressed to the teacher by one of my classmates. In any case, I apologized.
When I got home, I was very upset about what had happened that day. So, I told my parents what had occurred. My parents did what they do best..NOTHING.
I would say that the vast majority of JW parents who were not raised as JWs have no idea how difficult it is.

one of the (many) things that started me questioning the borg related to the baptism questions, talk etc.. anybody notice how matt.28 isn't mentioned, even though that is down as the primary reason for field service?.
maybe it's just the assemblies that i've been to.. what's your experience?.
does that invalidate the baptism?.
Hi Rex-
You are correct the act of baptism does not save us but God's grace does.
To Little Toe-
If you want to find out what the Catholic Church teaches about baptism go to Barnes and Noble and purchase a copy of "The Catechism of the Catholic Church". The paperback version is very cheap and the explanations are very detailed.

Hi-
Most of the major Protestant denominations recognize each other's baptisms because they are all being baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit since most Protestant denominations all believe in the same Triune God.
Most Protestant denominations will not recognize the baptism of the JWs as a valid baptism because the JWs do not worship the Triune God and because of the emphasis they place on being baptized into an organization.
In my case, I was baptized as an infant in a Lutheran church and my wife was baptized as an infant in a Catholic church. So, when we started attending the Christian church that we attend now, they viewed our infant baptisms as legitimate and the JW baptism as invalid. If my wife and I had never been baptized as infants our current church would have recommended to us that we be baptized.

this cuote is from the letter to bodies of elders of may 15.
1988. what is acceptable evidence of scriptural freedom to remarry?
hearsay or strong suspicion that one's mate.
The elders were trying to get evidence on an inactive JW friend of mine that he was living with his girlfriend. So, they staked out his apartment with a big van across the street. My friend came out of his apartment to get the newspaper and I guess waved at the elder staking out his apartment. When the elder realized he had been recognized by my friend he hit a car in the parking lot in his haste to get away. My friend knocked on the door of the man who owned the car who had been hit and gave him the elder's license plate and phone number and told him that this is the guy who hit your car and drove away. The elder never came back.

march 24, 2000. to all bodies of elders in the united states.
dear brothers:.
in reporting cases when individuals have disassociated themselves by engaging in nonneutral activities, the following direction should be followed.
This is typical cult behavior. Make a rule that the JWs cannot be a member of the group if they participate in political or military activities and make organizational sanctions of shunning if one does this. However, so as not to appear as a subversive group, make it appear as though the individual came to these conclusions on their own without any fear of sanctions from their religious group.

october 24th is united nations day!.
how should we celebrate?.
http://www.freeminds.org/buss/okies.htm.
Hmmmm-
I say we celebrate by sending the UN story to the PO of every JW congregation. We could have a mass mailing of the Guardian stories.

Just a thought
people leave the wts, willingly or unwillingly(df).. what was that 'final straw' that told you "that's it...enough is enough..'.

'boycott shampoo!
When I read the Watchtower on the 1change in the 914 generation and the leaders of the organization did not take responsibility for their own ridiculous speculations but blamed in on the rank and file. I realized that this was more of the same.
