What was your most embarassing WTF experience with a fanatical witness??

we've all known those fanatical witnesses who are guilty of pdf (public display of faith) and always have to make a big song and dance to the whole world and let everyone and their dog know they're a faithful witness of jay hoover!.

1) when my mother first came in 'da troooof' this wacky, over zealous 'sister' was studying with her - you know the type.

this woman was one of those not so subtle individuals who would always talk loud in conversation and say the name jehovah a million times even when the conversation could have been about basketball.

There was this young guy ,16 or 17 who came to work where I did as a seasonal helper one summer. He was a pretty chunky kid and seemed a lilttle odd to me. My heart just about jumped out of my chest one day when I heard him talking about Jehovah and asking people about thier view of "world conditions" He was one of these Witnesses that you'd wish would keep his mouth shut because everytime he opened it, he undid all the good the rest of the Witnesses may have done. I took him aside later and told him I too was a Witness and that it would be best to keep quiet about God at work...people weren't taking his Witnessing too well.

Out in the Mechanics shop there was a big bulletin board on the wall above a tall set of storage shelves. Pinned up on that bulletin board were a whole bunch of Porn centerfolds. A bunch of us from the office had to go out to the Mechanics shop for some reason and when we walked in the door, we saw this kid teetering high atop the shelves . He appeared to be taking one of the centerfolds down off the wall. Out of surprise, he jumped down from the shelves and in the process of doing so, a few of the centerfolds he had already taken down, fell out of his jacket. Some of the guys laughed and others were totally pissed off. The kid started appologizing and blubbering all the while looking at me while saying he shouldn't have given into Satan's temptation and he said he would ask Jehovah for forgiveness. People were looking at me as if to say "why is he saying this to you ?" They somehow hadn't made the JW connection between he and I thankfully didn't even know what he was going on about.

Later when things had settled down, I told him to calm down...it wasn't that bad....just stop talking about religion and just do your job and hopefully the whole thing would blow over. It was too late, they let him go... he was just too odd and it was clear he wasn't going to work out.

i knew of one poor person charleen moss (roy baty's sister) who did it seven times.

That's what they used to call him...he was Mad with power...French and short....so it fit !

His wife was sweet as they come.

"E"....she was a shining example of a long suffering Christian Woman with a quiet and mild spirit....she was his saving grace.

Oh my goodness....we are defenitly talking about the same person here . You are not the only one who got read the riot act over the phone. My Dad wasn't a Witness and had to come to my Mom's rescue when "C" went off on her over the phone one night after the Thursday meeting and brought her to tears. He made her go get her Bible and read outloud to him a bunch of scriptures about diciplining children. It turns out he was angry because my newborn Sister was crying so much at the meeting (turns out she was allergic to her formula) He came by our house in a car group the following Saturday in day in service. My Dad happened to be in the driveway when he drove up. With the entire group looking on, he told "C" never to speak to his wife that way again or he would have to deal with him personally. He was holding a rake in his hand at the time and in his anger, had it raised up and was gripping it tightly...he looked pretty menacing. I was in Jr highschool and I thought it was so cool . LOL !

Women who didn't have a husband in the truth came in for a lot of this kind of abuse from him. I saw him a few weeks ago at a funeral...he was a tiny little old man....everyone was talking about how afraid they used to be of him. He was the reason so many either left the Org. or changed Halls. His wife was as sweet as ever.

You had me roaring about the gloomy drizzling climate.

That and having to navigate Meridian Ave. to get to the Hall to go in field service would be enough to make anyone suicidal LOL !

I never did learn what the average hours per month were but the Congregation was one of those in Puyallup. No wonder the Northwest has had such a bad reputation. This was back in the mid 90's.

Puyallup....that's hilarious...who wants to go out in service when it's bucketing down rain most of the time. Between the rain and the doom and gloom religion, and living in Puyallup, it's no wonder so many of the "friends" were on anti-depressants most of the year. (even some of the kids were on Children's Chewable Prozac)

I know a lot of people in the hall you are talking about. I wonder if we know eachother too. I grew up going to a nearby Hall and the PO was a Nazi....his initials are C.M. When he arrived, he cleaned house. The teen agers had to sit in the front row of the hall on Sunday and answer assigned questions at the watchtower study. If your hair wasn't short enough...he'd pull your publishers card. He would take peoples bible studies away from them and assign them to someone else if things weren't progressing fast enough.

One of the Pioneer Sisters who's husband wasn't a Witness would regularly run off with someone and get herself DF'd . A really nice lady but she just oozed with sexuality and couldn't help herself. She'd come back a few months later and her non witness husband who always sounded like he could be Gay...(maybe that was the problem.) would take her back. After her third disfellowshipping, he actually came into the truth and eventually became an elder.

Were you made to rehearse what you would do/say at Armageddon etc?

i remember my parents went through a phase in the 80's of rehearsing what i would say in court if they were trying to get me to have a blood transfusion.

i remember the key comment they wanted me to say was that it would be like being raped, and then i had to be able to descripe what rape was.... i was about 7 at the time...(!).

i also remember having to rehearse a nazi style interrigation senario, as they thought i might need this at armargeddon when the nations "will turn on us!

Highdose....Our parents must have forgotten about what it says in Luke 12:11,12 "When they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not worry about how or what you are to speak in your defense, or what you are to say; for the holy spirit will teach you in that very hour , what you are to say. We had to have an answer for every occasion in case we were called on to make a defense for the "Truth" ...This was no way for children to live...especially when it turned out to have been completely unnecessary.

In the years 1968-75 we Witness kids were prepared for the worst eventuality by parents who were truly frightened for us. "Because they did these things to the least of you my brothers they did it to me" We were taught that this scripture meant that if they went so far as to torture and kill the Son of God...we, his lowly followers should expect the same or worse.

The Witnesses in Malawi were being tortured and killed...we children sat through deathly quiet meetings listening to frightened adults discussing it all in full detail ( bicycle spokes driven through their legs, women raped, babies heads smashed against trees) and they warned us that we would be next, there was no way around it...it had to happen...it was fortold, and Jehovah's will must be done with out fail.

Sisters used to bring different scarfs and coats with them in service so they could disguise themselves if they got thrown out of a neighborhood or Apt. building where preaching wasn't allowed. At one meeting a sister demonstrated how you could use plastic detergent bottles to hide rolled up Magazines in and bury them in your yard or garden for use during the tribulation. One sister, who colored her hair, bought a case of hair dye. Having gray roots during the Tribulation must have been her idea of pure torture. My parents sold our nice house and moved us all into a small mobile home across the street from the Hall where dozens of other JW's also lived while waiting for deliverance. I went through school in a fog...my graduating year was 1975 and they had us thoroughly convinced that we would never graduate or get old in this system. It didn't make sense to look forward to growing up, to plan for anything or even do your homework if the world was going to end any day. Instead we were busy disributing Tracts 1, 2, and then the 3rd one which was to be the final one and likened to when they blew the horns at Jerico for the third time, causing the walls to tumble down.

There was a recession going on, just like there is now. Lots of the Brothers were out of work. The Watergate hearings were going on...Nixon was being impeached, gas rationing was in full swing people were lining up for hours at gas stations to fill their gas tanks. It was a "perfect storm" of events for anyone wanting to convince themselves(and thier kids)the end of the world was comming. For a short time even the book studies were held at rotating locations so that "they" wouldn't see a pattern to our practices and know where to get us when it all hit the fan.

Bible period movies like "The 10 Commandments, The Robe, The Greatest Story Ever Told" were always being played on TV and they used to scare the hell out of me (tribulation nightmares for days) Although they were full of information that was contrary to our accurate knowledge, we had to watch them to remind us of what the early Christians went through and what was in store for us.

It has taken me many years to somewhat get over my growing up years. To this day, 36 years later, I can't watch these Bible Movies . Just from remebering these things, I feel like I need a glass of wine right now.

okay, so we finally decided that we are moving.

this is the plan we are contemplating:.

attend new congregation for one month (go to all the meeting with wt studied in brilliant colours etc.).

I do understand your dilema but my first thought is that it's best for you to be honest and straight forward in your part of this dilema rather than lowering yourself by playing at scheming games. You are an adult and a parent. I don't mean run and spill your guts to them, you owe them no explainations. If you want back "in" .....fine but if you ultimately want to be gone, you are most of the way there already. Going to all this touble to get what you want seems sort of "High School" and to me worse than whatever it was that got you DF'd in the first place. Why are you allowing them to force you stoop to this extreme level ? Who's life is it anyway?

Mr. Coffee

does anybody remember the old apostate guy they called mr. coffee?

back in the late 80s when i was at brooklyn he would dress in a suit, have a book bag, and come and stand in front of the 124 bldg or sometimes over by the towers hotel.

he'd easily put in auxillary pioneer hours.

Yes, I remember Mr. Coffee. He kinda reminded me of Danny Devito. One day as we were all filing into the 124 building for lunch, he was out there as usual shouting his face off. This time a neighborhood lady was walking by with a little ankle biter type dog on a leash. All of his shouting must have startled the dog because he started barking and biting at Mr.Coffee's heels. Much to the delight of the crowd of Bethelites on the sidewalk, Mr. Coffee hopped around trying not to get bitten.

If you listened to him closely you realized that he was using phrases that individually made sense but none of them tied together into any kind of specific point other than he was really mad at the Watchtower. The rumor I heard was that he was thrown out because of something that happened between he and sister Knorr (pffft...of course ) his advances toward her were spurned etc and he got the boot.

Where else would you see such a sight like that other than at a JW Assembly. I don't think any other religion provokes such reactions from it's former members.

i have been doing a lot of thinking and...for some reason i keep saying to myself i should write a letter of dissociation...however at the same time i think its just a waste of time.

so i made a to do or not to do list.. i still cant make up my mind... so i thought i should show the list to everyone and maybe you guys could add to the list things i may be taking into account... thanks... .

not to mail the letter.

You can do all the things listed on your "TO" list without writing a letter that will do nothing except make you feel better short term, but will end in your losing more that just the years you've spent on this so far.

Just play it cool...your leaving isn't an emergency. If you do it right, they might not even notice. We left after being "in" our whole lives, 30+ years of regular attencance in the same hall. It took 2 years for the elders to notice we hadn't been there and to come by our house with the C.O. I always tell people to behave like the British Royal Family does when faced with contorversy. They never complain, never offer any explainations, they make no excuses or apologies for themselves. This way they remain somewhat mysterious and maintain a certain mystique that keeps them from groveling at the feet of their critics. No one knows what they really think about anything so they have no amunition to use against them. Their accusers go away and leave them alone and the whole thing blows over and they go on as normal.

Show up at the Hall once in awhile...practice being very vague and giving blank looks. Offer no concrete answers as to your whereabouts during the meetings and assemblies. You owe them nothing but remember, they are prepared to make you pay big time for not playing the game anymore.

Jehovah's Witness children and creativity...

hey there folks,.

i remember some time ago there was a wonderfully written website which dealt with jehovah's witness children specific type of suppression causing a higher number of very creative children than other religious forms of suppression.

i was wondering if anyone remembered what this link was?.

If JW kids are extra creative, I know from growing up as one during the 1975 years, its because extra creativity likely was developed as a coping mechanisim much like an abused child developes multiple personalities. In order to cope with what I was being taught about the tribulation and those who would be destroyed at Armegeddon, like my own Father, I spent many a night thinking up all kinds of creative scenarios as to how I would save him and my little sisters during the tribulation. It was the only way I could calm myself. My brother completly blanked himself off...wouldn't even respond during our family study or at meetings...as if he removed himself mentally from the situation.

I think things have gotten better for JW kids (hopefully) as I don't think people really believe it like they used to back in the day.The boy creid wolf too many times. There are more born in's now that are going with the flow and gloss over most of the realities of what their religion is teaching. They see the big chunks and don't pay attention to anything that seems a bit too out there.
