I don't doubt that it is true that students resort to such tactics to pay for thier education. It's just that they always dredge up every rotten thing they can to show that higher education is a bad scary thing. They want JW's to get their education reading their magazines and will use every tactic they can to scare them off from advancing beyond that.
When I was in Bethel, I worked in the hot sweaty bindery with a guy that became a JW just after he got out of College. He got chosen to work in the Law Offices because of his previous education while the rest of us who followed their advice and went to Bethel instead of College were overlooked. He was then sent to Law School.

It's called. "only print information that confirms our foregone conclusions."
A study showing that 1 in 3 college students reads the bible daily would never even be mentioned in the Awake.

It seems like a lot of the things we do for our kids as far as helping them once they are older, is done to ease our own discomfort or even guilt while seeing them make their way in the world.

You're not a bad Mom....it's a huge experiment raising kids. It gets harder as they get older when their decisions are more important and you have less say over what they do yet bear much of the brunt of what they experience (at least thats what if feels like).
I think it might be important not to put too much "life or death" into the decisions they make when they reach a crossroads in their life. Too much drama makes them afraid to make a mistake. He's got from now until he's 65 to figure out what he wants to do. Sometimes the most interesting adults around are the ones who don't know what they want to do when they grow up. Let him know it's ok to try and maybe fail. Let him know that whatever route he chooses he will adjust as needed. A plane going from California to New York is off course most of the time so the Pilot has to make constant adjustments along the way. It's not a straight course between point A and B. It's that way in life. Encourage him to take smart risks and to have a plan B in mind. Then let him know he has a soft place to land should he need it. What more can anyone expect you as a Mother to do?
Hang in there Ma....it will work out fine.

I know how tempting it is to smooth the way for our kids but my first thought is "why did you book the ticket rather than let him do it and why are you calling his boss". I do know the answer to those questions. I have two sons and their Mom used to do this. She'd balance their checkbooks, remind themof appointments etc. I told her that she needs to not deprive them of the life lessons they can learn by making mistakes or having things go awry and then learn how figure out how to make things work for themselves. Sometimes necessity is a motivator. If they are too fat and happy , so to speak, they won't feel any urge to get on the ball, move forward and progress.
This is easier said than done....very difficult to sit back and hope they work things out. It's best to offer advice and hope for the best rather than get in ther and manipulate.

Why Elders leave the Organization and why their Wives stay.
by stuckinamovement ini have talked to quite a few brothers who have served as elders and servants and left the organization.
in most cases their wives have remained in despite the husbands best efforts to persuade his wife that the organization is wrong.
even though the wife can see problems within they continue to press on in service to the society.

Lifes too short. What a miserable situation you describe. Haven't we all seen Elders wives and kids with looks on their faces that reflect they are going through someting similar or worse. I remember how they would have to linger after the late night meetings looking longingly at the closed door where the Elder was in some meeting or other. All they wanted to do is go home at a decent hour for once.

There may be several reasons why an elders wife remains after he leaves. Three that I can think of are....
1. He has seen first hand, over an extended period of time, the inside dealings of the organization. Heard the problems, seen the personality clashes, dealt with the power struggles and egos. Most or all of it, until now, he has had to keep silent about. It would be difficult to convey to her all the subleties and nuances of the conversations and the dealings he has been part of over the years and expect it to have the same impact on her.
2. She has enjoyed the status of being an Elders wife and because of this has had a good share of attention and has been able to make friends and be a bit more popular than the "plain" JW. It might be hard for her to just leave because her husband is burned out. Maybe he'll come back, she hopes. In the meantime she may get to enjoy playing the part of the long suffering Martyr.
3. When you look around the KHall in general, there seems to be a larger proportion of Women with unbelieving mates than there are Men with unbelieving mates anyway. That tendancy already exists. I think Women are more inclined to want to be part of a community and may allow untolerable circumstances to continue because of that desire, than men are. (I'm generalizing here) Women gather together and commiserate with one another ...Men tend to be loners and want to handle things themselves.

Will Embracing the Internet lead to Increased Growth for the Watchtower?
by jwfacts inmore important than the reduction in the size of the new magazine is that the watchtower will be actively promoting its website and encouraging people use it to download magazines.
my concern is that this has the potential to lead to an increase in growth for the watchtower.. the door-to-door preaching work has been one of the most inefficient means imaginable to gain converts, and done little more than tie up the time of active jws.
now, by directing people to the internet, witnesses can spread their message at an alarming rate for little cost.. do you feel that this has the potential to lead to a surge in growth of jehovah's witnesses?

Besty - 400000 visits and 100 bible study requests daily = 0.025% conversion
Just because there are 100 requests for Bible studies per day doesn't mean that many are actually started. Of the ones that are started only a small amount are likely to follow through to baptizim.
