What do People Mean Exactly By "Spirit" and "Spiritual"

many people distance themselves from formal religion but say that they are a "spiritual" person.. .

similarly theists talk about the "spirit" as if it is something that is self-evidently true.. .

i wonder if anybody would like to have a go at defining what they mean by these words?

For me ''spirituality'' has nothing to do with religion... There is nothing ''spiritual'' about religion... That's what used to annoy me about the dubbies... Being ''spiritual'' mean't knocking doors, reading the mags, attending meetings...

I believe that we are ''spiritual beings'' trapped in a physical body... There is more to life than our existence now... There is a lot you can read on ''spirituality'' but for me it's that peace I feel when i'm connected to the spirit realm... Material things have no value (for me) when you have inner peace and tranquility...

Cofty you seem to be a very ''scientific'' minded man and I admire that... I'm too busy floating away with the fairies! Lol. With ''spirituality'' it has a lot to do with faith... Faith in the unseen and un-touchable... I understand that you have to ''see/hear'' with your physical eyes/ears... Spiritual people ''see/hear'' with their spiritual eyes/ears.

I know I probably don't make sense... But I have biscuits and tea so I'm happy.

Saturday Morning Musings ...

one hot, hot thursday, in july of 1987, i worked a half day, drove from wilcox county to mobile county to pick up a sister, then hit i-10 for new orleans to attend the convention which began the next day.. the evening traffic was unbelievable; when i finally arrived and pulled into our hotel parking lot, i was shaking like a leaf in the wind.

we checked in, and after showering, i fell into bed and slept like a drunk person.. the next morning, friday, was a complete blur as we made our way to the superdome.

i don't remember anything that was discussed that day, just the searing heat as we returned to the hotel.. after a long shower, i again fell into a deep slumber.

Oh how I remember the conventions!

I hated them! With a passion!

How much babysprout hated them, sitting all day getting more and more irritable... There is only soo much a toddler can play during those long hours.. The looks we would have because I kept giving her food and drink... Then when she waas soo exhausted she would just cry and cry... The long journey home and then to start again the next day!

We usually had wet, cold weather for the conventions... We would be wrapped up in blankets shivering! And the conventions were usually in July!!!! There has been a handful where it was hot and that was awful. Should have been at the park enjoying the hot weather with a picnic, not listening to crusty old men...

There was a supermarket next door to the football stadium we used to go to and soo many would descend to have a cooked breakfast and lunch... During the sessions, we would go over and find the cafe full of dubbies drinking tea and eating cake... This used to eat into the sessions, so all the congregations had strong counsel not to go... There were still quite a few that went! Lol... Took no notice of that council... Then a few years back Bethel sent letters out to the congregations saying that the stadium would not be renting their stands out to the WT anymore... So they found a stadium miles away with nothing around it... No supermarket, nothing! It was horrid, like a prison! I swear they did that so the R&F wouldn't wander off to find food and relief from the constant drivel...

Judas and Unforgivable Sin

i'll be the first to admit that i haven't done the research on this one, and i can't remember the answer from my jw days - but there's something bothering me about the scenario of judas and his betrayal of jesus.. considering that the betrayal of jesus by judas was foretold in prophecy, it was essentially set in stone.

it was going to happen, it was an absolute because divine prophecy is correct.

judas had to betray jesus in order to fulfil prophecy.. now, i've always personally believed that a person does not sin by an act that they cannot avoid, but this seems like kind of the motherload of standing on the traintracks.

It warms me to the bone when Christians argue about who's right about the bible and are absolutely convinced the other one is wrong and have diametric viewpoints.

At least athiests all agree! LMAO!

There are many Christians who agree... It's the ''evangelicals'' who like to tell everyone they are wrong, and that you HAVE to believe in the Jesus they believe otherwise you are going to hell with Buddha.

like last summer, i've registered to participate in a fundraising event for the national ms society called the ride across minnesota (tram).

donations made in my name will help me qualify to make a 5 day 300 mile bicycle ride across the minnesota landscape.

like so many others that i knew, i thought the watchtower society had it right, that their answers were the correct ones.

Assisted suicide

we are watching a program about author terry pratchett and his coming to terms with alzheimer's and assisted suicide.... i am a believer in that we as human beings, who have free will, have a right to decide when and how we die... why can animals be put out of their misery when dying a painful death??

why can't we as humans make that decision??.

in belgium assisted suicide is legal, but if you go out there and your loved one goes with you, when your loved one comes back they stand a chance of being prosecuted.... i said to carrot ''humans should be allowed that right to decide when to die''.... carrot replied with ''it's illegal because you will have people just doing it so they are not a burden on their family''.... it seems to be a very touchy subject with people, especially on this program.. i would be very interested in some thoughts on the subject.... peace.

This made me think of the movie Million Dollar Baby.

I have never seen that film, will take a look.

We are watching a program now where two groups of people are arguing it out. Carrot is totally against it. I am for having that right to decide. I believe that it should be legalized in every country so when at that point where you are suffering in an unspeakable way, and cannot stand it anymore then medical staff can assist. Through a drip. But only when that person makes the decision to go.

People are traveling to switzerland when they still have a quality of life to die... Just because they are frightened they won't be able to get there to die and will suffer a horrific death. That IMHO is wrong.
