However the NWT bills itself as a literal translation.. The question is does the phrase "in opposition" belong in the translation in that verse.. Clearly Nimrod was evil, that is not in question.

So, God was confronted with a dilemma. On one hand, He had already decreed that only those who are perfectly righteous are deserving of eternal life. Thus He had, in effect, demanded that a very high price be paid for billions of unrighteous human lives. That price was billions of eternal human deaths. On the other hand, God wanted to give every human being the gift of eternal life, even though none of us deserved it, and even though His own high standards prohibited him from giving us that gift.
I don't know why God didn't just lower his standards for who deserves to live? Especially considering the fact that he created us in such a way that it was completely impossible to meet his standards in the first place. The entire thing seems primitive and contrived, IMHO. Sitting here trying to reason it out is about like trying to work out the exact location of Santa's house based on patterns of present distribution.

aChristian are you saying A&E had knowledge of good so they should have known it was good to obey, but no knowledge of bad so as to satisfy the written implication (since they hadn't yet eaten from the ToKoG&B)? If so I don't know how you can seriously hold such an opinion.

Any other churches call themselves the 'truth'??
by Beck_Melbourne inold habits die hard...and quite often in my comments i will refer to the borg as the 'truth'.
does anyone know of any other churches that refer to their own particular church or religion as the 'truth'??
also, does anyone know how it originated...all my life i have used the term...comments like 'how long have u been in the truth?

It boils down to "there must be one true religion and I can't see anyone better than JWs despite all the problems".. This is how my ex-roomate (who learned everything I did) decided to stay a JW. (aside: in reality he didn't want to disappoint his family and didn't want to lose his huge JW party network). -

something is puzzling me about the history of humankind and the stories that have been passed down through generations as fact.
the various histories of how man came to be.. which leads me to the question,.

Welcome to the New Order [tm]! we got no 'lektricity, no runnin' water, no weather forcastin', no trash pick uppin', no music (ceppin kingom melodies) or art or movies or books or tv, no gas fer our pickups or tractors, no airplanes, no trains, no ships, no internet (or as we like to call it the sinnernet).. none o that stuff... but we do eatch got our own tiger and lion, and we got tons of clean swimmin pools, clean windows, fully stocked vending machines, you name it. First of all the transition from apelike to humanlike likely took place over hundreds or thousands of generations. Each generation only saw themselves and a few before and after perhaps. It is most likely that by the time speech developed (and hence oral record of history) they were quite humanlike already.But more importantly, do you have any idea what sort of man your great great great grandfather was? How about any of your ancestors before grandparents or great-grandparents? I'm guessing no.
So why would you expect early man to have reliable information about theirs? -

Sorry my analogy wasn't specific enough. As stated, clearly the bug is outside of the balloon. As such it is a 3d bug outside of a 2d world. In reality the bug must be 'in' the skin of the balloon. From such a 2d bug's perspective, the world is a 2d flat plane extending in all directions. However it is not infinite, it is closed. Now extend the concept to 3d space. Go in any direction and you will get back to where you started. Read the book Flatland to understand where I'm coming from.
