It made it to the Associated Press!!! At first I thought the settlement -linked to its confidentiality condition- would be the end of it, so I was angry. I now see that Kimberly's triumph is deeper: She set a legal precedent at the Supreme Court level and the WT can not hide anymore behind the First Ammendment.
Kim wrote that appeals by abused members are being filed; Appeals that the WT is reportedly NOT contesting!!!
I'd like to see this cult shrink to insignificancy, because it is often lethal. But most of all, I want to see their "two witness rule" as applied to child abuse disappear forever.

article on settlement not in our paper, just the online version
by Mulan ini went through our morning paper, twice, but the article is not there.
it is online though, but you have to have the link.
the front page has no information to get you there.

If two witnesses are lacking, the accused is deemed innocent, charges remain confidential and - silentlambs says - parents who warn others are subject to disfellowshipping for slander. Disfellowshipping is an extreme penalty that means a total cutoff of relationships by family members, friends and business associates who are Witnesses.
I think the article touched the core of the problem. Why was it disapointing for you Mulan? Other than it was not on the front page.

Question about Settlement of Child Abuse Cases.
by Blueblades ini have two points to make that i feel are valid.
correct me if i'm wrong.
1) where are the funds coming from to pay out these settlements?

I was reading Simon's post about MAD on the thread and all of a sudden the thread disappeared! What's up? - Randy
I also noticed this morning that the settlement thread disapeared. Settlements usually come with a very long list of conditions. Silence must be one of them. As long as the precedent is set, more victims may seek this route through Kim & Norris.

ALERT: All Child Abuse Lawsuits have been settled. Millions cashed out???
by What-A-Coincidence inre: http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/8/116108/1.ashx.
a bethel insider in the know told me that all of the child abuse lawsuits where the watchtower bible and tract society was one of the defendants were settled back in the beginning of this year.
i questioned it and called napa myself and they were absolutely settled back then.

Actually, the ruling gives us everything we need. This is a big ruling for JW abuse survivors, likely to create precedent in other states where cases are filed. Other recent rulings on this same issue were appealed to the court of appeals and the California supreme court, who ruled against WTS. I will see if i can get these in one PDF packet for a thread re these issues in one spot, but I'm not particularly good at the tech aspect. As to the earlier rulings on the same issues, it is my understanding that WTS has decided not to appeal to U.S. Supreme Court. We're still looking at patterns showing WTS practice of cover-up in these circumstances. If you know of circumstances of cover-up, please email me at the address below. Kimberlee D. Norris [email protected]
GREAT! Kim may actually be the catalyst to bring change to the WT. (I was not aware she had two IDs in this bulletin).

How do I get a Witness to do some deep research on Russell? Any Pointers?
by NotaNess ini feel most witnesses don't know of the history behind russell and the beginnings of the society.
they're bent on "origins" of things, but we know that the wts keeps material and knowledge to a minimal on the origins of the society, and specifically russell.
to a co-worker, i hinted at the pyramid memorial about russell, and he said he didn't know what i was talking about (a 20 year jw veteran).. any pointers on how i can ease the subject into "forbidden" conversation around the witnesses at work?

I wonder why all of the posts by "Concerned Lawyer" were removed?
I hope the terms of the settlement do not include advertising of her services or requesting information in this forum.

Question:
How significant was the decision to reject WT claims of "cleric confidencialty"? Did it only apply to this case? To the Napa County? To California? To the entire USA? I guess I want to know if this was a full-fledged legal precedent that other abused sueing parties can use across the country.

Wife finally sees truth about "the truth"
by jakes inwell it has finally happened.my wife is not going back to the meetings again.as you would probably read in my previous posts, i have written a book about my experience in the watchtower organisation which is on the verge of being published.she still tried to cling to what little belief she had in the borg and did not want to read my manuscript.we discussed many of the issues and concerns i had about the watchtower but most of the times it ended in a heated argument.. i was quite surprised when she approached me about two weeks ago and asked to read my manuscript.after reading it she handed it back to me and said she fully supports me in publishing this book.her eyes have been opened to the deception and lies.i think she and a friend had a bad experience calling on one of her so-called jw friends.furthermore, she did not attend this past weekends circuit assembly..
hooray!!!.
all i have to do now is to introduce her to all you wonderful people here on jwd.. jakes.

Now this is where I concentrated on the logic. What about all those Witnesses who died refusing an organ transplant back when it was banned. Dont you think it was a tragic, needless and senseless loss of life? Organ transplants are now a matter of personal choice.
Truth has no expiry date.

...they're offering $10,000 to anyone who can provide a genuine, living transitional form supporting evolutionary claims.
Of course, the pannel of judges is creationist so don't expect decades of scientific proofs and hard facts to be aknowledged.
