  The urge to convert people

  where does the urge to convert people to ones own view come from?.

  i grew up a jehovah's witness and jehovah's witnesses are always right.

  that's where i learned to always be right and it took me years to realize that i could also "agree to disagree", although i still often forget about this.

  I think perhaps talesin confused you with someone else?

  On the OP, I've observed it seems very much human nature to want to push their way of thinking on others. You see it all the time in a basic form of arguing over brands. You prefer Chevy? Ford is way better. You mix Pepsi with your rum, Coke is way better. Even on behavoir levels, extroverts don't get introverts and apply negative labels because they don't act like them. Or vice versa. And we quickly judge others based on dress, appearance, lifestyle, what they drive....all based on a perception that our own ways are the "best" ones.

  Politics and religion are the more extreme forms of this negative nature. That's when things get ugly.

  Idle question about Abraham and Human Sacrifice

  i don't have my usual resources in front of me, so i can't fact check this, but there's been something bothering me.

  one of the things mentioned quite often as evidence of the wickedness and evil practices of the false religion that surrounded ancient israel is the practice of child sacrifice (baal and molech being the frontrunners as i recall).

  but ...... didn't god tell abraham to kill his own son isaac as a human sacrifice?

  Let's say a news story broke today that a father told his oldest son he must sacrifice the youngest son in order to show his loyalty to him. And without some emotional duress the son complied, but at the last second the father stopped him. Would the public response be apologetic and say: "ahhh, but notice he did not allowhim to kill the youngest son, how wonderful"?

  Don't think that needs answering. You gotta wonder why some hold their almighty god to such lower standards.

  Refuting the ARGUMENT BY DESIGN.

  it's tiresome and it doesn't add up but it's one of the most popular arguments for god's existence, "the argument by design.

  " jehovah's witnesses and other believers point out a wonder of nature like the eye and compare it to a 'lesser' mechanical wonder of human design like a camera.

  the supposed conclusion is that this natural wonder is evidence of creation by a powerful designer; god.. .

  I'm starting to *like* pantyhose again :o

  i haven't worn pantyhose for ~20 years, except for the odd special occasion in winter.

  field service really ruined me for pantyhose.

  sitting on those hot sweaty vinyl seats, getting up every so often to go out in the steaming heat....and freezing my jewels off in the winter...omg...i hated hose!!

  Mom would put that friggin snow suit on me, and the teachers would make sure I had it on before leaving school.

  Yep, sure do remember the ol' snowsuit Miz. The one that has been handed down to you after 3 siblings have used it for years. Worse were those damn strings running thru your suit attaching your mitts together. Hated, hated that.

  An older sister in my hall didn't believe in shaving her legs. So you'd see all this black leg hair smashed up against and some sticking out of her pantyhose. The meetings in which she was in your line of sight we particularly tortorous.
