estimates range from 4 million to 15 million children die from starvation each year on this planet.

that's between 500 and 1700 children a day, depending on what numbers you accept.

still, no matter which numbers you use, doesn't this make you arrive at one of the following conclusions?.

Yep. The problem with the thread is that a non-believer needs proof and evidence beyond the believer simply saying "I just know" or "I know because an invisible being told me it is so". Stating that is no different than saying "I'm right because I say I'm right". In the same sense, a believer will not accept a non-believer's argument of "you're God doesn't exist because I can't reconcile it with evil/suffering". Round and round.

The fact is a believer cannot present evidence that will convince a non-believer to believe. That is why I think the most honest and direct answer was what Psac wrote waaaaay back on page 9:

The honest truth is that I DO NOT KNOW any posible answer as to why God permits evil and suffering that would convince a non-believer. I don't know if there IS one. I think it is valid to question and to ask why and it is valid to search for the answer, wherever it may lead us.

We're just banging our heads against the wall....so who wants to go for a beer?

i curious to know what some of your beliefs are.

i believe that hell is separation from god, not being able to benefit from his protection and loving guidance.

i don't know if i believe in a fiery hell.. .

Stuck at the office right now (aka human zoo) where three female coworkers have been going on and on about shoes...and reality shows...and their kids Halloween costumes...and OMG, OMG...did you hear what so-and-so did?! One in particular has no volume control on their vocal cords, and another's giggle is like the shrieks from a billy goat with his nuts in a vice.

So yes...today I believe in hell.

what was your experience like as a kid on halloween growing up in a jw family?.

i was raised in a jw family but never got baptized.. my father used to make me and my sister put old awakes and watchtower's in the trick or treaters' bags.

we would say: "i don't celebrate halloween but here's a treat for you!

Well that's kinda different. Our family would just shut most lights off and hide out for a while. Ironic really...people knocking on our door and we'd pretend we're not there.

Think the next time JWs show up I'll answer with some bags of candy, chocolate bars in hand... "Hey cool costumes. Mormons, right? Clever. Well its not Halloween but here's some treats."

in his new book "the better angels of our nature" harvard professor steve pinker argues that humans are becoming less violent.

"as europe became more urban, cosmopolitan, commercial, industrialised and secular, it got safer.

perhaps as important is the increasing respect for women violence is a problem not just of too many males but of too many young males... the human race has come to share the goal of finding ways of overcoming the universal appeal of aggression.

Some stat highlights...

• The number of people killed in battle – calculated per 100,000 population – has dropped by 1,000-fold over the centuries as civilizations evolved. Before there were organized countries, battles killed on average more than 500 out of every 100,000 people. In 19th century France, it was 70. In the 20th century with two world wars and a few genocides, it was 60. Now battlefield deaths are down to three-tenths of a person per 100,000.

• The rate of genocide deaths per world population was 1,400 times higher in 1942 than in 2008.

• There were fewer than 20 democracies in 1946. Now there are close to 100. Meanwhile, the number of authoritarian countries has dropped from a high of almost 90 in 1976 to about 25 now.

Outlaw..yeah your idea is better, sticking cats to the ceiling. Though still think there's Lazy Susan potential. How cool would it be to Quantum Levitate the gravy boat over to Gramma at Thanksgiving? Very cool.

The honest truth is that I DO NOT KNOW any posible answer as to why God permits evil and suffering that would convince a non-believer. I don't know if there IS one. I think it is valid to question and to ask why and it is valid to search for the answer, wherever it may lead us.

That PSac, is the most reasonable and direct answer I've heard, from one with a strong belief in God, on the subject of evil/suffering. Well said.
