The Handmaid's Tale
by patio34 ini just watched the handmaid's tale, adapted from margaret atwood's novel.
pretty spooky about bible-based fundamentalist government.
or read it?

Yep! Read it when I was still a good little jw. So funny how people reacted when I told them...'you're reading THAT?!' As if it was any worse than what's in the "Hebrew scriptures"...it's actually tamer. Margaret Atwood is one of Canada's finest writers and The Handmaid's Tale one of her best, for sure!

MARITIME CANADA -- Global news tonite --- KWINTESTAL
by talesin inwell, the reporter came over today, and interviewed kwin for about an hour, and rolled some tape.
they have the info.
from silent lambs, and have apparently contacted 'local jw representatives'.. so , tune in to the supper/evening news, folks, if you are in atlantic canada.

I saw it! I thought you did great Kwin. It was short but it sure will have the dubbies talking...you know how Maritimers like to watch their suppertime news, so hopefully they'll be facing some questions on Saturday. I especially liked the part where you said that they 'must not take a brother to court'. Try to defend that at the doors! Good job!

What books have made you cry?
by Fe2O3Girl inbonus points if you don't mention wt publications!!
the first book that ever made me cry was the grapes of wrath by john steinbeck.
most recently, i was reduced to a blubbering wreck reading the five people you meet in heaven by mitch albom.

Someone shot Babar's mom??! I thought it was sad when Bambi's mom was killed, but elephants are endangered. That IS sad. ;)
As a young girl - I wept over the two Emily of New Moon books - L.M. Montgomery. Also Little Women. A good cry is a wonderful thing. I'm now re-reading the Lovely Bones for my little book club. I find it sadder this time around for some reason. -

Milk, Vaccines, and Carbohydrates
by Kaethra in(apologies for splitting this post up, but i cant seem to get my browser to allow me to post in paragraphs!
) since leaving jws i find i am much more willing to accept health care advice from the traditional scientific sources.
i get a little twitch when i hear someone say i read a book about that and so-and-so, the doctor saidya da ya da ya da (against traditionally accepted advice).

Exactly evilforce! Sensible, traditional, scientifically-backed, and time-tested advice. That's what I believe in. Oh, did I mention they don't "believe in" psychology or anti-depressants either? (They are not scientologists though.) I like them so much, but I think they are somewhat conspiracy-minded...I can't go back to thinking that 'the World' is against me.

So, that brings me to the title of this thread. My above-mentioned friends are against all three. Notmilk.com is one of their bibles. They believe that vaccines have produced only bad effects. They thought the old jw point of view on vaccines was a point in their favour, which made me twitch big-time! As I understand their position, diseases that vaccines were supposed to help to eradicate were already on the decline when vaccines were introduced and vaccination actually resulted in a spike in cases of the disease once it was introduced. Additionally, vaccination has a negative impact on the recipient’s natural immunity. Lastly, carbohydrates are to be avoided. The real evil is low fat products! Don’t even mention “light” salad dressing or you’ll get a good tongue-lashing (and not in the fun way). This despite the fact that neither one of them can claim to have perfect health.

It’s not that I’m against alternative medicines or learning about nutrition. I am very much for both and always have been. I guess I have just become more bristly about accepting advice just because it goes against tradition. I’d like to hear others’ thoughts on this…in particular – what do you think of milk? vaccines? carbohydrates? ?

(Apologies for splitting this post up, but I can’t seem to get my browser to allow me to post in paragraphs!) Since leaving jws I find I am much more willing to accept health care advice from the traditional scientific sources. I get a little twitch when I hear someone say ‘I read a book about that and So-and-So, the Doctor said…ya da ya da ya da (against traditionally accepted advice).’ I get an even bigger twitch when I hear someone accuse “the establishment” of deliberately misinforming the public and/or concealing information just to ‘keep profits up’. Have I become Establishment Girl just because I was denied that as a dub??

I ask because I have a couple of friends who are intelligent and educated (not to mention staunchly atheist) yet believe things that I consider somewhat bizarre. I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate having someone say to me to read “The Research”, as to my mind that means: ‘read the biased pseudo-science that backs up my point of view.’ I guess I did that to people enough as a jw (see: the Creation book) and I can’t stand to have it done to me.

I have two that I'm willing to share...my ass still bears the scar from my four-year-old self, playing hide-n-seek in my uncle's abandoned cabin. I'd shuffled down behind a piece of plywood and there was a broken bottle there waiting for my tender little butt. The most embarassing part of that was the extraction. All the aunts, cousins, and uncles wanted to be in on it for some reason, and I was a very modest little girl! The other injury is from the cat in my avatar. I really should have known better knowing his high-strung, siamese nature. He was curled up all cuddly and asleep beside me one night while I watched a movie. I looked down at his cute little self and couldn't resist planting a kiss on his head, as I had done (and still do!) many times before. He must have been in some sort of nightmare because he tore into my upper lip with such ferocity that I still hear the crunch. He opened up my upper lip almost completely through. I waited in the emergency room for almost six hours and then asked for some tape to put my lip back together, since I needed to go to work in two hours. (Thanks Health Canada, by the way!) I still have the scar, of course...I tell myself it's kinda cute. har! So many people have told me that they would have 'thrown the cat in the river'. The fact that that thought never entered my head makes me proud. I really am an animal lover. It was my fault, not his, after all. I think the people who have said they would throw 'the cat' in the river are mother fuckers...my personal opinion, of course.
