I'm of mixed feelings...I've attended at least four jw funerals since I've been "out"...I went because it was really the least I could do for the person I had cared about in life. But it has weighed heavily on me. I recently had a dream about this subject. I was in the house where I was raised - in my old bedroom in fact, and my neighbour, (a jw), was getting re-married next door. For some reason, my husband was in my bedroom with me and we were both watching the bride walk down the "aisle" from my bedroom window. He turned to me and asked, "aren't you going to join them?" I said, "no...I'm only ever allowed to be present at funerals...never anything fun". Then I crawled under my childhood bed and cried. eeee...I still get the shivers when I think of that dream.

Bridgestone Blizzak WS70 Winter Tires
by Simon inso, after 3 and a bit winters in canada i finally invested in a set of winter tires.
up till now i've had a good set of all-seasons (goodyear assurance tripletred) and they have been very good even coping with a sudden calgary freeze last winter that saw accordian buses sliding back down the hill we were on (scary!
) and general chaos on the roads.. but, driving on the deerfoot on solid polished sheets of black-ice in rush-hour traffic is not nice and you could feel the car getting more than a little vague at times.

It's so cute when a new, 'prairie provinces', Canadian posts stuff like this: "Normally we're in the -10 to -20 range which is about the same cold feeling as -5 in the damper UK." awww...give it a few more years with your block heater Simon...then you'll be wishing you'd settled in the east! ;)

ESSIAC TEA
by megaflower ini have been researching this herbal tea and it is suppose to detox the body and treat a variety of illness.
does ayone have any experience with this 4 herbal tea?
thans for any imput..

megaflower - I have the powdered form of the original tea recipe, though I've yet to make it up. It's not much of a "tea" the way we normally think of it...definitely not something you're going to want to sip on...more like shoot down as fast as you can and follow with something quickly to get rid of the taste.
My experience with it has to do with my father. He sadly died of brain cancer. A few months after he was diagnosed he was completely bed-ridden - unable to walk at all. He started taking essiac and within a few days was back on his feet walking for up to 30/45 minutes at a time. It really was amazing. It didn't cure his cancer, unfortunately, but there is no doubt in my mind that it gave him a few extra months of life worth living...who knows what might have happened had he started on it earlier.
I plan to take it occasionally as a cancer-preventative myself. I'm a wee bit paranoid about that particular disease... I'm not sure what else it is purported to be good for though. And of course, there are going to be a variety of opinions on it. I know it does something for cancer though, since I've seen it with my own eyes.

What's Your View on Tipping?
by minimus intypically, i give at least 20% on my total bill.
if the service or the waitress is especially charming, maybe more.. i wonder, when you sit at a bar/restaurant and have a meal and drinks and then order a take out ( i do this for my mother quite often) are you supposed to tip on everything, including the takeout??.
when i stay in a hotel, i typically leave 2 or 3 dollars per day for the maid.

I think that us Canadians have been unfairly influenced by our American brethren then. If the reason for the 20% minimum tip is because American servers are paid hourly wages below the minimum, why is it that we Canadians need to tip our servers 20% when that is not the case in Canada?? Just askin'....

DRAG ME TO HELL - a cult classic to be?
by hamsterbait ini saw it tonite, and was scared out of my wits, giggling and enjoying spotting the horrendous number of continuity gaffes (i am convinced they are deliberate!).
the cat fight with the gypsy is a classic - she is trying to put a curse on the girl.
during the fight her false teeth fall out, and she attacks her throat with her gums!!

I didn't really care for the "protagonist" from the beginning...which I guess was kind of the point...but when she killed her cat that was it! All empathy gone...couldn't wait for the gypsy to get her. har! I thought it was really fun but not as scary as I'd expected from the previews. I'd definitely recommend it. I love horror films...and cats!

I'm so pissed at myself... (Last Templar...)
by Kudra ini'm so pissed ...that i lost 3 - 4 hours of my day watching the "last templar" on hulu.. (curse you hulu!
ugh- insipid boring love interest, stupid stupid girl (for her actions at the end), completely unsatisfying outcome- especially about her father's friend and her "change of heart" (wtf...) etc.
man that love interest/fbi agent deserved a swift punch in the face in that last scene.. really, i'm just mad at myself that i watched that instead of finishing a grant application i need to do (by tomorrow).

har! I had really been looking forward to that movie, but it was so insipid I had to delete it from my DVR after suffering through the first 45 minutes or so. I mean, Mira Sorvino! What happened? It was baaaaad!

Is health care really better in Canada?
by Bubblie insince, i live in the us, i have always heard that they have better hospitals and access to health care in canada.
what can you say to me the help me out?.

To your question number 1 Gregor - 1. If a foriegn tourist falls ill or injured while in Canada, assuming they don't have other insurance, are they cared for at no or minimal cost?
Good question. I can guarantee that they would not be cared for at no cost, since the costs of health care in Canada are paid for by tax-paying Canadian citizens and you will not receive "free" care without proof of registration with the health plan of your province of residence. Each Canadian province has its own schedule of fees for services, so although Canadian citizens do not see bills for basic care, fees are charged to the provincial health care program, (normally via a third party who administers the claims), by the health care provider according to their provincial fee schedule. Foreign tourists would not be charged less than these same fees, although I'm uncertain as to whether or not they would be charged more. (I think that's unlikely though.) When Canadians travel to a foreign country, our basic health care coverage goes with us; however, we would only be reimbursed for emergency services and then only at the rate that would have been paid had we needed the service in our home province. So, travel insurance is always a must for this Canadian, as it should be for tourists visiting our country!
I'm curious about the premiums other Canadians pay for their basic health insurance. We've never had to pay premiums in Nova Scotia, as far as I know. How are/were they collected? Payroll deductions?

They have even taken away the tooth fairy
by jambon1 ini have just ben told by my jw wife that my daughter will not be able to get a penny for her very 1st wobbly tooth, presumably because the belief in fairys may be damaging to her.
on the other hand, it is ok for 100 adults to discuss in front of my wee 5 year old, matters relating to oral sex in a sunday morning wt study.
absolute bastards.

When my niece lost her first tooth, she wanted to keep it AND get the moolah from the Tooth Fairy. So...she put a little piece of cotton ball under her pillow. She was quite upset the next morning when not only was the cotton ball still there, but also a note, which read: Dear J****, This is not a tooth. Signed, TF
