I know this isn't specifically a JW thing, but it does seem cultish to me, so I thought I'd ask you. A family member is considering going, and it's just ringing all sorts of bells to me. What about you?

since i don't know what to believe about "god" right now, i'm wondering what a pagan's take on all this is.
consider this a roll call for any and all pagan types out here.
whether you consider yourself pagan, neo-pagan, poly-theist, wiccan or whatevs, i'd like to hear from ya.
There are others who promised to post as well...

Yeah, I do owe a response, too.
For me, I've got a different idea/concept of the Divine. I was raised Catholic, left, called myself Nature-based spiritual for a while, then discovered Paganism, was Dianic a while, and then back to generic Pagan. I sometimes refer to myself as a Choose Your Own Adventure Pagan, but would be better called Bioregional Pantheist. Just for a little background. Give me five years, that may change, haha!
I believe that if you look down into many religions, you will find a common theme - something along the lines of seeing and treating others as you would be treated and that god is love. I truly feel these two are the essence of religion and the nature of The Divine. Since love (or potential to love) is in all of us, so the Divine is in all of us. The Divine is both within us and without (that would be to say within animals, trees, nature, etc). in many ways we are all mini "god/desses" (but not in the sort of I can turn you into a spider, way). But the Divine is also the sum of all of us (people, mountains, trees, etc) and more.
That's about the best synopsis I can give on my beliefs on the nature of the Divine - heh or the Divine of nature. :)
do you ever or have you ever spiritualized secular songs?
i find that i have done it quite a bit in my life.
i dont really know whyjust recognize that i do it.
Yeah, a few here and there. La Montana (The Mountain - don't know how to make the tilde over the n) by the Gyspy Kings is very spiritual to me.
the mr is a jw-started back into studying 3 years ago, got baptized 2 years ago.
i've never been one, nor have an interested (was raised catholic, now am a pagan - uu).. i'm just starting this thread to see how you all deal with it.. thanks.

Zidd, I'm not sure, I just googled bible, and then looked up the quote. I figured it was a common bible of some sort. I'm very much not up on my bible types... I generally steer clear of all of them. hahaha
I hadn't thought about the significance of the"not bound" statement. Too bad it wasn't in the NWT.
Oh yeah - servitude - that just gives me the willies.
Hmm I didn't know about the comment to the Pharisees. Besides,, isn't alot of what Paul says taken as gospel anyway?
george ________ you are an idiot.
we were both newly married and working full time and enjoyed a saturday morning sleep-in and would you believe this idiot "special pioneer" would drive up with a witnessing car group and knock on our door saying: "hi brother 007, we missed you at the group this morning...." yes thats because i was having sex, thanks for ruining it.
he was a single, rumored gay brother, about 40 years old who could never find the right sister.
Lord Have Mercy! Just open the windows and make sure you're romping all loud and randy - maybe they'll get the clue!
my wife and i became proud parents to a 7 pound 2 ounce baby girl on september 16, 2010 at 4:50 a.m. est..

Shameless bump.. IOW BTTT
a rebellion had begun.
in moses' absence, the israelites built a golden calf and engaged in idolatrous reveling.
the clamor of their immoral festivities was clearly identifiable as improper.
This whole thing is a spoof?? OMG I was reading this and getting all worried that The Mr would be reading this soon!!

jws can divorce, they're just not 'scripturally free' to remarry unless adultery has occurred or the divorced other half goes off and sleeps with someone later if they havent divorced for adultery.
Thanks for the clarification Nelly. The Mr has told me before if we split, he will never remarry (and does not intend to divorce either). So that bothers me... but then I read this bit on another thread
12To the rest I say this (I, not the Lord): If any brother has a wife who is not a believer and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her. 13 And if a woman has a husband who is not a believer and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce him. 14 For the unbelieving husband has been sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife has been sanctified through her believing husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.
15 But if the unbeliever leaves, let him do so. A believing man or woman is not bound in such circumstances; God has called us to live in peace. 16 How do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband? Or, how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife?
Usually in this situation you hear people quote verses 12-14... But then I read 15 and 16, and though I'm not a bible believer, I literally felt relief in those words. Like I could show that to The Mr and finally feel like he'd have biblical confirmation that it's ok...
Of course the NWT's is alittle different:
15 But if the unbelieving one proceeds to depart, let him depart; a brother or a sister is not in servitude under such circumstances, but God has called YOU to peace. 16 For, wife, how do you know but that you will save [your] husband? Or, husband, how do you know but that you will save [your] wife?
But still...
I've just been having a really rough time lately. We are all facade. I think even he thinks we're doing better than we are. I mean sure, I haven't argued with him lately and I can be plenty affectionate or hot and heavy, but my hearts not in it. It's just going through the motions.
this was brought up just in passing on another thread.
but i wanted to see if there are any bethelites or ex bethelites that remember some of the crazy rules we had to follow when we were there..
Yeah, but the nuns, I think, know more about what they're getting into than your average Bethelite... or so it seems by this thread.
