so i've asked this question to witnesses in the past (super no no question to ask by the way but hilarious responses) to bosses and coworkers, and random people of different faiths and i'm curious to know how mixed of a response this community will give.

Allow me to interject here. It seems to me that scripture teaches that man is tripartite: body, soul and spirit; the soul being our personality, i.e., mind will and emotions, the spirit being that which gives life to the body and personality and allows for communication between God and man.
first death = cessation of bodily function and soul consciousness (sleep being an appropriate metaphor)
Second death = destruction of body, soul and spirit.

Yes, I was aware that Russell borrowed from Barbour and heralded Christ's 1874 presence till his death in 1916. And I am sure he believed in the chronology he taught. Unlike most, I think he had a relationship with both Father and Son...but I also believe that he, like Harold Camping, died a broken man in his attempts to prove Jesus was mistaken when he said no man knows the timing of the parousia. Sad really.

Brandon Harper is simply a contributor on another forum. I thought his take was interesting but not necessarily in keeping with my perspective.
I checked out the Bible Student site you used in your response. It seems to me that they are still promoting Russell and things he promoted i.e. 1874 for the second advent as well as his 6 volume Studies in The Scriptures series, pyramidology etc.
How does this fit in with your thinking?
Personally, I believe Jesus set up His kingdom post ascension in AD 33, that the second Advent is still future and that 1874 and 1914 are irrelevant to the gospel and salvation. By the way, next week is ascension week and I am preaching on the significance of the ascension this Sunday.

Let me suggest that you don't need a new religion. You don't need any religion. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life!" Christianity is a grace relationship with a person. He who has the Son has life. I John 5:10-13

How do Jehovah's Witnesses members know the Governing Body has not become the 'evil slave'?
Never once, in the entire history of Jehovah’s Witnesses or the International Bible Students Association, has there ever been any period during which they legitimately represented any deity’s interests on Earth. The Governing Body cannot possibly have become ‘the evil slave’ simply because that implies it ever worked in any capacity other than in the interests of evil.
From the very first issue of Zion’s Watch Tower, the publications from the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania, Inc. and then from the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York, Inc. have contained abundant evidence that the authors have not been willing to “wait on Jehovah” but have instead run ahead, haughtily offering as “the truth” and as “unmistakable testimony” from the Scriptures what were, in fact, 100% fallible and incorrect false hopes.
The publications criticize other religions for doing this same thing, citing Genesis 40:8 as the reason why these religions get their prophetic predictions so wrong. The Governing Body claims they are examining the signs and seeking to determine in what ways prophecies are going to be fulfilled: that is divination.
There is only evil from that organization and from its leadership. Anyone who remains associated to it will be supporting those who bind up heavy loads upon others (“wait on Jehovah”) that they themselves are haughtily and hypocritically unwilling to budge even with their little fingers.
The fruit of false prophets is predictions that do not come true. (Deuteronomy 18:20-22; Matthew 7:15-20) When Jehovah’s Witnesses actively ignore the mountainous history of their religion’s false predictions from false prophets, or pretend that such predictions are not example of prophecies from divination rather than interpretations received from Jehovah, they demonstrate plainly that they trust the Governing Body more than they trust the Bible. (Ezekiel 13)
They are an evil organization still actively bearing the poisonous fruit of false prophets into the world.

How do they know any of the invisible events of 1874, 1881, 1914, 1918, 1919 1922- 1926 took place. Because that is what Watchtower told them.
For starters, there are no dates in the Bible.
Everything is established by eisegesis alone. The first resurrection began in the spring of 1918 and Christ rejected all of Christendom in the fall of 1918, and chose the directors of the WBTS at Brooklyn headquarters in 1919, is all extra-biblical, i.e., WTS mythology forming the basis for WT authority.
You can make the Bible say anything you want to if you can add your own church history onto the scriptures and call it Bible-based.
The most humorous example of this kind of interpretive abuse is found in the sounding of the trumpets in Revelation 8-11. When the first trumpet sounded, a third of earth's trees and grass burn up Rev.8:1-7 because Rutherford gave a talk at a convention in Ohio in 1922.
