Children - Your experiences of being raised a JW
by jambon1 inyes, it's my favourite subject.
in fact, it fascinates me.
i am also confident that we can learn a lot from peoples experiences & that perhaps even a few families may avoid repeating the same tragic mistakes made by the ill-advised parents of children raised in the jehovah's witness religion.. as some of you will be aware i have had a struggle in the past to free my children of the criminal effects of wts doctrine on the minds of my infant children.

My parents were very inconsistant in their dealings with all of us kids. We had worldly friends. (but not a lot) They could spend the night. I dated worldly boys, (but they constantly worried I'd have sex so I don't know why they let me) I was involved occasionally with after school clubs etc. I hate sports, so I never asked, but I went to the school basketball games and football games with my friends. They always bought us gifts and wrapped them, but not at Christmas, always a week or so before or a week after. They were generous, and bought things all year for us. I actually felt I was better off than most other kids in that way, because I didn't have to wait for my birthday to get what I wanted, and my gifts weren't stuff like clothes, it was things I really wanted. They bought my clothes regularly and they were nice clothes.
They never studied with us. They would be inconsistant with meetings. Either we went constantly, sick or not, or...we didn't go for weeks on end...
Now, the really negative.......DRILLED the JW experiences under the Nazi's into my head...I mean drilled.. I was terrified of persecution, and terrified that the demons knew my weakness and would REALLY torture me even more than others.
As a matter of fact, I have spent my entire adult life afraid to speak my mind on certain subjects because the demons might hear. I couldn't even pray out loud.
Armageddon, armageddon, armageddon......relentless....
Ugly reminders that in ancient times, parents could stone their children for things.
Going ballistic if I began to get serious about a boy I was dating. Examined my underpants when I came home. (ugh. that's abusive, don't you think?)
I could go on, but I won't. Really not pleasant memories on many fronts.

Skeeter, reading your last post...forget my advice because I think you are probably right, he has OCD....My advice will just feed his obsession. I take it all back. I don't know what to suggest. I like Yknot's advice (lol) maybe a hottie old gal will get his motor running in a new direction.

Question For Those Who Have Been Around Awhile...
by BoomTown ini started fading about a year and a half ago after i saw serious problems within the organization and doctrinal flaws.
i was a ms, bethelite, pioneer for the better part of 10 years.. while pioneering as a ministerial servant i married a girl who wasn't considered "strong" in the truth despite being raised in the truth.
anyway for the better part of the last 18 months i talk to her about the flaws when an opportunity presents itself.she no longer goes out in the ministry(more or less for the last year).. .

Be a little careful about the direction to the elders regarding holidays. We all got that from the "Flock" book and the congregations and the R&F do not have this information. How would you explain how you know it if you aren't on Apostate websites? You need to think of a really good and plausible reason to have that information.
Good luck!

Eighteen months really isn't a long time. Take it slow. You are having GREAT success, and you are doing it right. Slowly keep pointing out little things that "bother" you. Make sure you don't sound apostate. Just be doubtful and bothered. I think the plan you have already been working is having really good effect. Just remember that if you push too fast, she may kick into "cult mode" and be afraid to listen to anything you have to say. I am fading unbelievably quickly, and my family doesn't suspect a thing! They are really coming along, but again, they are not afraid that I am an apostate. I make sure that I make positive comments as well as "doubts" to allay their fears. And I drop any subject quickly if they look at me funny. Then I make a tiny positive remark, and wait for a better time.
It sounds to me like you are having a little more "open" conversations than I am having. Only you know your wife and how far to go, but remember that it is so heartening to you to hear her express doubts that you can easily let the dam burst and flood her all at once.
I congratulate you. She will and must decide for herself whether or not to fade. If she still has doubts about whether this might in fact BE the true religion, then the Armageddon stick she has been beaten with is and was powerful...
Best wishes!

I am not a qualified mental health person, but I did used to volunteer at the mental health center. I agree that his behaviour smacks of OCD. If that is the case, (and I am not saying it is, only that it might be, as other posters suggest) I think it has been fed by the org. A couple of years ago at the summer assembly, they had a big part on unbelieving relatives. They brought out a story of Noah and the Ark, and how SEVEN DAYS BEFORE THE RAIN BEGAN THE DOOR WAS CLOSED. (read those caps in a reeaallly SCARY, LOUD voice! They did.) and then basically insist that they are the FIRST ones we should try to persuade!
All the JW's in my hall immediately began campaigns to rush to conversion. Calls, letters, barrages of information. My mom (also elderly, has been all over her unbelieving brother, sending letters, cards, literature, etc. She doesn't want to be BLOODGUILTY (read bloodguilty in a scary voice too!) before Jehovah. I can't imagine how crazy it could get with someone a little offbalance.
Write back and cite Mal 3:6 (it won't paste, but it is the "Return to me and I will return to you, says Jehovah of Armies, and you are the sons of Jacob, you have not come to your finish" or something close to that effect.
Maybe tell him that (here's a good scripture) John 10:27
My sheep listen to my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 28 And I give them everlasting life, and they will by no means ever be destroyed, and no one will snatch them out of my hand
Maybe tell him that it is in Jehovah's hands now....that your dad has done his part....
That the only idea I can come up with.....also, I wouldn't drive myself nuts reading all his emails. I agree with a lot of the posters who advise to send him friendly emails once a week, all chatty and happy, and just don't discuss his. (After all, you haven't read them!)
Good luck with a very difficult problem.

Ray Franz Was Wrong
by Farkel ingod rest his soul.
although i never met him personally, he and i did correspond a number of times, and i have numerous friends who have not only met him, but stayed several days with he and cynthia at their home.
if nothing else, ray was kind, non-judging, and generous.

Farkel, you again write an excellent post and argue the point well, and it is well taken. It is hard for me, (and maybe I am still governed by my old belief system...) to think that they are completly aware of how wrong they are on all levels. That being said, I have always completly believed that they know quite a bit of it is BS. I think the reason they are unwilling and unable to change many policies, is that without them, the R&F will certainly stop preaching, (What would be the point?) stop so many meetings, and really, I suppose, why join at all?
I know an elder, who, when I asked about something that I knew that the rest of the congregation didn't, (That they don't report your time to the org until the 20th or 21st....I had heard this from another JW elder in a cong in another city) said to me laughingly, "Well, some things the congregation can't know. If they knew we had changed the date, they wouldn't turn it in until the 20th and we'd still be calling the late ones!)
It's that kind of attitude the GB has I think.
