I sued the local congregation
by chukky 594 inseveral years ago, before my wife and i left, my 5 yr old daughter got up during the watchtower to cross the aisle to sit with someone else.
she tripped on the roving microphone wire and smashed her head on the foot of a metal chair.
the bleeding was profuse and an ambulance was called.

Chukky,
Perhaps I should have first welcomed you to JWN.
There is no question as to liability. Obviously if someone trips on a cord that is strewn over the floor, the property owner is liable. As a recovering insurance agent, I am aware of the legal definitions of negligence and assumed risk. It is my own personal opinion that suing for anything above and beyond medical costs when there was clearly not malice involved is not the right thing to do.
My sister in law is a personal injury attorney, and I understand how they make their money. By litigating. They keep about a third of any settlement or judgements. IMHO these are the people who have inspired a culture of suing over anything and anytime there is a good chance of receiving a chunk of money that will make it worth their time.
Again, I'm not saying the KH isn't liable, just that they shouldn't have been sued especially years after the fact.
I sincerely hope your daughter is doing well, and her health problems have been able to be treated and hopefully cured.

Does anyone really think the Witnesses saw that the cord might trip this young girl and didn't care? I'm sure there were many who came to her aid, although I'm not sure since I wasn't there. I would also guess the brother who was handling the microphone didn't intentionally put the cord in a place where she would trip. I would see nothing wrong with filing a claim on the property owners insurance, but to sue for damages over this, in my opinion is not right.

Any Stock Holders out there? I need Financial Advice. No...not which stocks I should buy.
by Voices inok first off let me ease your worry...i'm not asking you 'what stocks i should invest in.
' i have a stock in mind that i have seen progress steadily up and up.
before i could even think about investing, i knew this company was going to take off and it's slowly climbing.

Voices has already researched the company. They knows which stock they want to buy. There is nothing wrong with buying and selling stocks on your own. True, you shouldn't plan on funding your entire retirement through your own stock purchases, it should be in addition to your retirement especially if you're a novice. But this person is wanting advice on how to buy a particular stock that they want to purchase.

There is a book written by an old JW friend of mine who is a TV journalist at a local level. It's called "The Groveland Four" It is an excellent true story about what happened in Groveland, FL during the 1940's or '50's.
It has nothing to do with the WTS, and I may be off topic for mentioning it, but I thought anyone interested in this topic might be interested in the book.

Revelation Prophecy Fulfillments According to WTS.......How Long Has it Been?
by drewcoul ini recently listened to an old fred franz talk that i found online that i remember attending when i was 11 in 1983 in indianapolis.
since i remembered that i didn't follow what he was saying back then, i wanted to listen to it and see if i could understand it now.
(the only difference is he still doesn't make much sense, but now i know it wasn't just because i was too young to understand at the time.).

Kingdom Interlinear = apostate literature?
by brotherunsure inhas anybody else come across jdubs that have never heard of the kingdom interlinear translation?
i noticed this artcle http://www.soundwitness.org/jw/kit_part1.htm and i've found when i asked witnesses about it some never heard of it and other's had heard of it but didn't have one and didn't know if they were still in print and one got all weird and suspicious saying "well what do you want it for?".
when i called the watchtower and asked if it was still in print the guy had to put me on hold and look it up somewhere, he didn't know off the top of his head.

I have both a KIT and Emphatic Diaglott. I have found it eye-opening.
I originally used them to understand where the "Great Crowd" are serving GOD. It is absolutely clear that they are in the "Divine habitation" and not on the earth.

Ahhhhh....I see.
Your principles are subjective. Very nice. You didn't see fit to seek damages at the time, but waited several years, before the statute of limitations ran out to sue.
If you were a principled person, your view of the congregation would have zero to do with whether you felt they were liable for the damages. Obviously you didn't feel they were liable at the time, but as your animosity toward the congregation grew, and after you left, you felt you could go back and grind an axe.
I'm glad I don't know you.

You should see if you can buy the stock through your 401(k). Sometimes there are a few individual stocks you can buy through your 401(k) but it's usually limited to mutual funds or common stock of your own company.
I would look into setting up an etrade account. I have one. You don't need any special license or permit to buy stock. All brokerages have fees associated with trades. You're not going to get out of paying a fee for buying stock.
You will receive a tax form by January 31 of your gains or losses for the previous year. You have to pay capital gains on the appreciation of the investment. You can deduct any losses.
The upshot is you can do it yourself through etrade or sharebuilder, and they'll let you know next January what you can deduct or claim as income on your taxes.
It's not very complicated. Don't be intimidated by it. Normally, I would recommend you go through an advisor, but since you are interested in buying one particular stock, you should be fine just doing it on your own.
Good luck!
