That was so kind of you to be friendly with the girls. You might have been the nicest person they talked to all day. I always remembered the people who were polite and didnt slam a door in my face. You showed them that former JWs can be nice people too, and not all exJWs are crazy, angry apostates.

How many of you followed the WTS direction on education years ago and have been screwed by it?
by Julia Orwell ini'm really interested in this question because i've heard for years that if you forgo further education and go pioneering, when you have a family down the track you will get a good job because jehovah will provide for you because you pioneered.
as long as i was a kool-aid drinker, even then, i thought, "how does pioneering pay your bills?
surely education should come first.

My husband is a draftsman, he took an acceptable 2 year program at college. 4 year programs were looked down upon by the JWs in our area. He could have gone to school for 2 more years and been an engineer. He never applied for entrance scholarships to university, and never considered a student loan because he felt debt was bad. He had some of the top marks in the Province, but tried to make due just to get by "in this system" because "the end was near."
Now he wishes he had done things a bit differently! Fortunately our children will be encouraged to pursue their dreams and not have to worry if they are pleasing Jehovah or not.

Jehovahs Witnesses and psychiatric diagnoses?
by Marvin Shilmer injehovahs witnesses and psychiatric diagnoses?.
today i added a new article to my blog sharing information from a 1983 study published in the journal for the scientific study of religion addressing religious affiliation and psychiatric diagnoses.
this article pulls information from an excellent academic study that is often misunderstood and therefore underutilized for its value.

One of my inlaws has been severely depressed for years. He has had 15 or more electroconvulsive therapy treatments and it failed to work. Antidepressants don't work. And he refuses to see a therapist or psychologist because he's afraid they will blame the religion (due to two other "sisters" experiences with a therapist). Sad.

- Have you ever shunned someone and then later regretted it?
Yes, my little sister. She was living with her "worldly" boyfriend. I didn't attend her wedding either, and deeply regret it to this day.
- What, if anything, did the person you shunned do to reach you?
She was amazingly loving and kind, like she always was. She was positive and loved her life, living without regrets. She forgave me for shunning her when I reached out to reconcile. My sister showed me unconditional love, something most witnesses lack.
- Were you ever reconciled? How did that go? Was their hostility and resentment on their part, or love and forgiveness?
After not speaking for a few years, I apologized once I woke up to TTATT. She immediately forgave me, and we have been best friends ever since and speak to each other daily. I later found out she had contemplated suicide after leaving the religion. She had been in an abusive relationship with an elder's son prior to leaving, and I hate to think of her life wasted because of this stupid religion. My sister is the happiest, sweetest person I know, and to think she was contemplating suicide because me and my parents shunned her makes me sick.

This realization really sucks! My husband and I are 30, newly out of "the truth," and we both did not get a degree. My husband took a two year program instead of going for two more years to become an engineer. He was trying to get by without using the world "to the full." So now he's stuck in a dead end, although well paying job. We made some pretty stupid decisions being raised in this religion.

Homeschooling VS public/private schooling
by PSacramento ini was wondering on the views about homeschooling vs public/private scholling.. thoughts?.
-
Nice_Dream
PS - were you thinking about homeschooling? I like the idea of homeschooling, especially for young children. In the city where I live there is a secular homeschooling group that regularly plans activities for homeschooling children of all ages (bike park, hikes, field trips, etc). That would be great for my social 4 year old. But I've been thinking about sending him to regular school or private school, as I worry about homeschooling once he hits high school.
The only private schools are Catholic or Christian in my area, so we would probably choose Catholic if they are kind of liberal. I haven't checked it out yet, and I wasn't sure what it would be like to go to Mass, as I've never been before. So we're still on the fence deciding which school to send our son to.

Believe in God? A Christian?
by OccupyJehovahsWitnesses inhappy almost friday everybody!
so i'm curious, how long has everyone been out?.
do you believe in god?

I've been out for almost three years and am still figuring things out. I've looked into other beliefs/philosophies, and Christianity is still the one that resonates the most with me. The new paradigm of Christianity, which is more theologically liberal, is what interests me.
My husband is an athiest and hates anything to do with religion.

At the end of the video, I love how the JW says "we're done, because you don't want to learn anything, you just want to tell me something that you think is truth but isn't." I guess he doesn't see the irony of his statement.
