The Herald/Sun and the News are very rich corporations. If they have made a false claim then perhaps the WTB&TS would benefit greatly by suing them.

I'd love to know how they are going to make 100 years of Watchtower history and theology based on that one year disappear... I'd love to know the "satisfactory" answer they will give the R & F. I'd also love to see how many people actually walk because of it. Newer converts not so much, but those who "grew up" on 1914? I wonder what the reaction will be...
Funny you mention 100 years. There is a JW on topix who was going on about 100 years yesterday. This guy is very knowledgeable in JW doctrine and some there believe he is there to set the records straight and is direct from Bethel (if not the GB). He said the following
Amazing that Jehovah's first ministry, and his last ministry, are roughly 100 years long.
He made several references to a 100 year link to the first century and of course goes on about how christendom has done nothing during all this time. But an interesting take and I wouldn't be surprised to see this in future literature.

The arrogance in the 15th July 2011 Watchtower.
by ThomasCovenant insorry if this has already been discussed.
i've only just had a quick look at the 15th july wt.
once again i've looked at it from the point of view of the governing body dictating to their secretary, the text to rush down to the printing press.. page 21 para 16/17.

From the Watchtower 1961 9/1
Do not think of this as limited to one who attends a place of worship or goes through some form of religious service or exercise. If one renders obedient service to someone or some organization, whether willingly or under compulsion, looking up to such as possessing a position of superior rulership and great authority, then that one can Scripturally be said to be a worshiper.

Today's WT Study Stupidity About Df'ing
by metatron inin today's watchtower study, towards the end, you had one of those typical comments by a former df'ed witness expressing appreciation for being shunned.
these comments always remind me of a stalinist show trial in which the accused enthusiastically accepts being executed for the greater good (probably to save his family).. after this kind of nonsense is expressed, you will get a flurry of self righteous comments emphasizing how important it is to shun your disfellowshipped relatives, so that they can come back in the "truth".. oh, really?
do any of these people raising their hand realize that, if the "success" of disfellowshipping depends on your shunning, then the "repentant" person is "coming back in the truth" for the sake of their relatives -and not because of fearing jehovah !!!???.

Disfellowshipping is a lot like standing your child in the corner...kind of a time out...so that they can think about things. If we keep interupting their "time out" with association, etc., well....what good is it.
It would be a lot more palatable if you viewed it like that. In reality, it is like throwing the kid out on to the street and saying "fend for yourself and I'm not speaking to you again until I can see that you are sorry and to show you're sorry you can put up a tent in the backyard and do three times as much work around the house as you did before. Then in six months time I might let you in the house and start talking to you again."

New Light @ The 2011 District Convention
by dontplaceliterature in" at the bottom of the image on the back of the invitation raises some eyebrows, but last night in the routine district convention article during the service meeting, i caught that one of the paragraphs mentioned that we would be encouraged to keep a copy of the tract in hand for a discussion during sunday's last talk.
my guess is, there is going to be some new revelation about what the "?
" represents, or some other fangled idea.

This is what they have been teaching about the ten toes -
Watchtower 69 5/15

What possible significance could the ten toes have? These picture all the coexisting powers and governments on earth today, since the number ten is a Biblical number symbolizing earthly completeness. So the dream image relates to our day indeed! We should keep in mind that this image did not become static with the appearance of the final world power. The image had to keep on developing in order to include the weakening influence of the socialistic, democratic elements against the imperial, dictatorial powers of this world. Ever since 1914 the weakening influence of democracy and socialism has gone forward particularly against that part of the iron feet of the image represented by “the king of the north.” The ten toes of the image picture all the nations, not merely those that have thus far gained admission to the U.N. At this stage comes the dramatic climax of Nebuchadnezzar’s dream. The prophet Daniel continues his interpretation; his words have vital meaning for our day: -

This should be interesting because Daniel was given a special gift of being able to interpret dreams, as the JWs are not inspired they do not have this gift so would be wrong in prophecying any interpretation that will be in the future. If they are interpreting it, it must be something that is already occurring.
The feet and toes are made of clay and iron. Daniel does not call this a fifth Kingdom (as he did name the other parts as the first to fourth kingdom) neither does he say the feet and toes are two different kingdoms. What he does say about the feet is that it is a kingdom divided and as for the toes he says this kingdom will be partly strong and partly fragile. This year we have seen a spread of democracy, particularly in the middle east from one country to the next and a fragile fight to establish it. China appears to be in this struggle as well but for the time being has done a lot to prevent this.
Our current world powers is a mixture of communism and democracy.
Another clue is the Daniel 2:43 states
"As you saw iron mixed with ceramic clay, they will mingle with the seed of men: but they will not adhere to one another, just as iron does not mix with clay" Democracy is very much about men (individuals) having a great deal of influence in rulership.

The Queen is still on our Australian coins. My opinions haven't changed, what King Henry VIII did in the name of religion was horrific, not to mention many english Kings and Queens of days gone by.
Kate Middleton was only confirmed in the Church of England on March 10th.
That doesn't mean to say I have no interest in them. I have enjoyed reading novels that include historical facts about the monarchy and was curious as to the wedding dresses worn by Kate and Princess Di.

I have been reading the advice from here saying not to let them sidetrack but she did have such a natural tendency to do that. She would get so sidetrack that she would say I can't remember what the point is I was trying to make so I would tell her. You just know what they are going to say.
She made the point of how the org is a lot softer than what they were in the 70s and 80s and told me what the congregation was like. I pointed out that sounds good but it is not what is coming from the GB and they are in fact getting tougher from what I read. She was talking about others and how some let their children get baptized too young and how she felt that was wrong so I said she may enjoy the upcoming magazine directed to parents about this issue. On the GB being harsher I mentioned the July article that she will read that states appostates are mentally diseased. She said no it wouldn't but it might mention they are spiritually diseased. I said yes that is what I would have thought too but it actually says mentally diseased. Anyway she will remember some of our talk when she sees it in print instead of just reading it with blinkers on.
I did some research on the UN issue the other day and came across the site -thirdwitness. This site makes a stand for JWs views but I was really interested to see the form that was sent out to the Society each year requiring them to list the individuals they wanted accredited for that year. Of course the form was blank but it is headed with the following -
"Year .... Accreditation Form
for representatives of Non-Governmental Organizations
Associated with the
United Nations Department of Public Information"
What the JWs hate about this organization is that they declare that they will provide peace and security and yet they were not a 'member' but actually 'associated' with this. Hardly a library card membership for access.

A JW knocked on my door this morning and she was with her young teenage son, who was dressed in tie, suit and shiny leather shoes. She has been in the religion for 18 years. We had a looong conversation and discussed many issues (briefly). It was really hard to get a word in as she was a good talker.
She started out with her bible and read a scripture then went to a booklet, which was underlined and plenty of notes written in, then back and forth between both. She was very confident and so I let her go on for about 20 minutes. Then I started to explain how I knew what she was talking about and then the conversation was more specific.
I told her that even though I had grown up as a JW and left, I had now been looking closer at the teachings. I said I was very dissapointed about the idea that the JWs were teaching that Jesus was not the mediator for the great crowd. She was very surprised and asked where I got that idea from because it simply wasn't true. I mentioned I had been doing a lot of research on the JW CD Rom. She asked how I obtained that as it was only available for JWs and otherwise illegal to obtain. I mentioned that my sisters were still in the religion. Anyway, as she was the one doing most of the talking she read out 1 Tim 2:5.6 which says how Jesus died for us all. Naturally I said that is how I personally fell about it but the JWs do not. She basically gave me a guarantee that this was absolutely not the case and that is why they even pray through Jesus. She said how she had been a witness for many years and she was now standing in front of me and swearing that Jesus was her mediator, as he was for all mankind. I mentioned how I had another guy who drops off the magazines to me and he came with whom I assumed was an elder once and he confirmed that this was definately the case - Jesus is mediator for the 144,000. She was taken aback but you could basically tell that there must have been some truth in what I was telling her. She said she would have to do some research on it.
We seemed to go from one topic to another - as I said she was a great talker and seemed to go off in every direction, so I only brought up things when I saw the opportunity. I did express my disappointment in the GB and she went on about the F&DS so we had an interesting conversation there. I mentioned about the number of times Armageddon had been predicted, of course she explained 1975 as being interpretations of some JWs only and it was a weeding out time. I expressed my disappointment at the GB not having cleared up the problem (that they created) until after 1975. She said there was only one other time they had stated a year and that was 1914 - she knew this because they were so open about it in the proclaimers book and this only indicated that they knew that year was special anyway. I said that there were several other years before and after that time that were predicted and they could be found in earlier publications that were no longer available and that the proclaimers book had left out much of the early history. I could tell she didn't believe me. I mentioned that this was from the organisation that was supposedly appointed in 1914 but still setting dates and teaching much that is unrecognizable today.
Naturally at one point she said that even though I had a bad experience with the JWs many years ago she thought I was just looking for things to criticize. I explained I was only looking for the correct viewpoints on matters and if I was to trust the GB once again I had to believe what they were telling.
I also mentioned how it was disappointing that the Society had become a member of the UN, even if it was only the public information section for the purpose of research and they resigned immediately only when it had become public. Here again she didn't believe me and said she would have to ask another elder about it. I explained what she would be told but the fact that they did this in the first place was not good.
She started explaining how only JWs did the door to door work and she got really defensive when I discussed issues about that. She told me how effective it was and I explained how she was using the wrong word to describe it.
Anway, when she left she said 'I hope we meet again' and she said she might possibly call again if she found something interesting from her research that she wanted to share.
