recently...my nephew confided that he doesn't want to go to the meetings anymore.
he told his parents.
reply from dad - typical party line - "live in our house - attend the meetings - or leave".
doubtful and liz's nephew
If you've got no place to go just ignore your parents if you can. Start living your own life. Say you are trying to be intellectually and emotionally honest. I find this a good notion to keep in mind to encourage myself and also to rebut emotional blackmail. it works - JWs stop in their tracks and I quickly move on. However as you guys are very young it may take some practising.
doubtful its hard not to be discouraged when you are faced with a pile of books you have not read or studied. Tell your teacher about your situation or get a doctors note to say how you are feeling. This will also document the pressure you are experiencing.
i'm an atheist, my wife's a jehovah's witness.

hi mindseye - welcome.
If limited to these 2 options, I'll welcome #1. I don't see it as sad at all. From this vantage point, an individual can take a page from the existentialists and create their own meaning in life. Life is invigorating when it is yours to create |
so, i'm sitting at my desk one morning, about a week ago.
the desk is right beside my sliding glass door in my new ground floor suite.
the drapes are wide open and i'm sitting in full view of anyone coming up the driveway.
they missed a good opportunity. Witnesses here are so vigilant. The feld ministry conductor even asks if all the basements were done.
note: the following is not meant to be construed as a recommendation but to demonstrate the sharp contrast between any authentic bible translation and the new world translation.
for those of us who participate and or read the threads on this board, i understand and appreciate that all here have different views on religion, the existence of god, and of the catholic church.
i believe each individuals convictions should be treated with the utmost respect and dignity.
I think blessed gives the text a foreignising element which adds the sort of distance people appreciate. Happy in contrast makes the text more understandable and current and sometimes people prefer this.
In short it is all down to personal preference as you guys are indicating
i went to the assembly for half a day today.
does truth change?".
"the truth does not change," she said, "but our understanding of it changes.".
If God's Word does not change and God's Word is truth, then truth is also unchanging. If the collective doctrines of the Jehovah's Witnesses are considered truth and the doctrines are regularly revised to allow for new understanding, then how can the doctrines be considered truth if truth is suppose to be unchanging? |
great reasoning Gary
this is my first post.
the first portion is my story, and toward the end, you will find the section pertinent to the title of this thread.
(starting with the portion in bold print).
Hi doubtful and welcome- you raise some great points

Like I asked before in a previous thread, how can you (anti) non-existence? You can only (anti) idea/belief. |
well my answer would be that to the extent that God exists in the minds of believers and in the stories they tell, and in the experiences they attribute to him - he exists. So this is what an atheist is opposed to and arguing against. This to me is freeing - it frees the experiences of god from god and suggests that a multitude of other things are going on some of which science can attest. As a woman I'd prefer to look at the other possibliites science and biology open up to me and forge different directions.
i think i may have reached another crossroads.
the most tolerant woman in the world and i were discussing it last night.
i've seen my loss of faith like a relationship breakup, i've done the gut wrenching fear bit and i've been heavily invested in the anger and angst phase where i've sought out people who believed as strongly as i once did and challenged them (like an ex-lover calling up for a shouting match.
best wishes to you qcmbr

I think it is wise to consider the hidden extras when buying. Option 2 seems to have lots so I think option 1 seems a safer bet - a stark, raw option - but hey I prefer to supply my own dressing
