I agree watersprout in principle. If a person is in so much pain and discomfort that nothing at all can be done for them and they want to die then there should be a legal way out. However even if here was a legal way out there is still the feelings of those left behind to consider. The family may not be able to find it in themselves to let a loved family member to go.

Assisted suicide
by watersprout inwe are watching a program about author terry pratchett and his coming to terms with alzheimer's and assisted suicide.... i am a believer in that we as human beings, who have free will, have a right to decide when and how we die... why can animals be put out of their misery when dying a painful death??
why can't we as humans make that decision??.
in belgium assisted suicide is legal, but if you go out there and your loved one goes with you, when your loved one comes back they stand a chance of being prosecuted.... i said to carrot ''humans should be allowed that right to decide when to die''.... carrot replied with ''it's illegal because you will have people just doing it so they are not a burden on their family''.... it seems to be a very touchy subject with people, especially on this program.. i would be very interested in some thoughts on the subject.... peace.

Why do Americans still dislike atheists?
by behemot inby gregory paul and phil zuckerman (washington post).
long after blacks and jews have made great strides, and even as homosexuals gain respect, acceptance and new rights, there is still a group that lots of americans just dont like much: atheists.
those who dont believe in god are widely considered to be immoral, wicked and angry.

Dawkins has done his research. Saying that aspects of the old testament god are not how Dawkins has described him messes with our thinking.

A simple question about Jesus prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane.
by nicolaou inwho recorded it?.
jesus is in the garden with peter, james and john but he removes himself from them and prays alone.
in all three accounts of this event we read that the disciples fell asleep and jesus had to actually wake them up.

nicolau I was not being gently mocking. I was being sincere and was simply replying from the internal context of the logic of the bible.
The account doesn't say that Peter, James, and John slept through the whole thing... just that they fell asleep at some point while he was praying. After all, he prayer the same prayer several times.
good point ding. I love how these points come out when one does an analysis of the verses.

The self-certifying Bible explains very clearly how all that is in the Bible came to be. Of course many Christians no longer accept that the Bible is The Word of God. So this explanation will not satisfy them, and so the plot thickens.
2 Timothy 3:16
New International Version (NIV)
16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God[ a ] may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
too true Trevor. Even if Jehovah did or didn't inspire the bible writers, to me what is being described in the Garden of Gethsemane sounds vey much like "the hero's dilemma" which is an internal conversation an individual has when confronted with unimaginably hard choices. The hero's dilemma is a very common form of art in ancient texts and is always moving as it resonates with us and elicts questions about our engagement with the world around us. It occurs in tragedy and in homer. So this form has a long tradition in storytelling and in myth but conversely it is new everytime it is retold.

Kindly reply to PHILADELPHIA PONOS
by jean-luc picard inpp, i have been reading up your previous threads.
it's getting to the point where i'm constantly having violent fanstacies about hurting them and recently i actually considered buying a gun.
before this job i was non-violent but they are starting to push me to a dark place.

many people benefit form being amongst Jehovahs witnesses. Go back if it takes you to a peaceful place philadelphia ponos. And whilst there also get some professional help if you think you need to sort out the thoughts that seem to be indicatng you need to harm someone. (I am assuming that philadelphia has been sharing these thoughts on the thread where he expressed that he wished to go back to Jehovahs witnesses).
In our congregation we have many families who are benefitting from being there. Imo and from what I have investigated there are not many places like jehovahs witnesses congregations for being in a highly regulated environment that can keep a person in a peaceful safe condition (especially if this is what they have experienced from them in the past) and if this is what they are after.

obviously Jehovahs spirit brought it back to the minds of Jesus' desciples, nicolau. But why would Jehovahs spirit do this? As Jesus says some pretty controverial things even suggesting that he is in two minds about going through with what is ahead.
