Its not quite what one would expect. Zainichi Chosenjin, that is Koreans living in Japan (left over from the time that Japan annexed Korea and turned it into a colony), but loyal to North Korea !
This Aljazeera film has a look at these people. Zainichi Chosenjin are one of the key sources of foreign currency in North Korea.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=baWvh4eYCig
and in this video, at a soccer match between a Zainichi Chosenjin team and another Japanese team, you see how enthusiastic the crowd can be, as they wave their North Korean flags around;

Kidz in North Korea
by fulltimestudent ineven in difficult circumstances life goes on.
these piks show some of the activities of children in nk.
they are usually not identified, but we can presume that they would mostly be of the children of the elites and their associates in pyongyang.. it is thought by western observers that only people loyal to the state are allowed to live in that city.. calligraphy is an important art form in the east asian area, and nk is not an exception.

School pupils from South Hwanghae province visit Kim Il-sung University in Pyongyang. I guess, its much like
the school groups that visit the Universities I attend.
Its an interesting video from NK TV, as it seems to indicate that the provincial areas have well-fed elite groups also.

Reading through the History written by Ammianus, the Roman historian, for my course, I found this description of the end of a nasty Elder in the city of Alexandria. Its dated to 361CE. And its found in Book 22, Section 11. (Riots at Alexandria) and George, the nasty elder is actually called a Bishop (not an elder) But for the purposes of this post, 'elder' suits the occasion. (Not that I'm (grin) advocating violence against any other so-called elder).
I thought that enthusiastic students of true Christianity would be most interested in the great peace that it brought to the hearts of Christians. (OK, I agree I'm being sarcastic)
Quote:
2. And at the same time, Artemius, who had been Duke of Egypt, and against whom the citizens of Alexandria brought a great mass of heavy accusations, was also put to death, and the son of Marcellus too, who had been commander both of the infantry and of the cavalry, was publicly executed as one who had aspired to the empire by force of arms. Romanus, too, and Vincentius, the tribunes of the first and second battalion of the Scutarii, being convicted of aiming at things beyond their due, were banished.
3. And after a short time, when the death of Artemius was known, the citizens of Alexandria who had feared his return, lest, as he threatened, he should come back among them with power, and avenge himself on many of them for the offences which he had received, now turned all their anger against George, the bishop, by whom they had, so to say, been often attacked with poisonous bites. ( The Penguin translation reads: a human snake who had often made them suffer from his poisonous fangs)
4. George having been born in a fuller's shop, as was reported, in Epiphania, a town of Cilicia, and having caused the ruin of many individuals, was, contrary both to his own interest and to that of the commonwealth, ordained bishop of Alexandria, a city which from its own impulses, and without any special cause, is continually agitated by seditious tumults, as the oracles also show.
5. Men of this irritable disposition were readily incensed by George, who accused numbers to the willing ears of Constantius, as being opposed to his authority; and, forgetting his profession, which ought to give no counsel but what is just and merciful, he adopted all the wicked acts of informers.
6. And among other things he was reported to have maliciously informed Constantius that in that city all the edifices which had been built by Alexander, its founder, at vast public expense, ought properly to be a source of emolument to the treasury.
7. To these wicked suggestions he added this also, which soon afterwards led to his destruction. As he was returning from court, and passing by the superb temple of the Genius, escorted by a large train, as was his custom, he turned his eyes towards the temple, and said, "How long shall this sepulchre stand?" And the multitude, hearing this, was thunderstruck, and fearing that he would seek to destroy this also, laboured to the utmost of their power to effect his ruin by secret plots.
8. When suddenly there came the joyful news that Artemius was dead; on which all the populace, triumphing with unexpected joy, gnashed their teeth, and with horrid outcries set upon George, trampling upon him and kicking him, and tearing him to pieces with every kind of mutilation.
9. With him also, Dracontius, the master of the mint, and a count named Diodorus, were put to death, and dragged with ropes tied to their legs through the street; the one because he had overthrown the altar lately set up in the mint, of which he was governor; the other because while superintending the building of a church, he insolently cut off the curls of the boys, thinking thus to affect the worship of the gods. (Again, the Penguin translation is clearer, reading: "because he thought that long hair was a feature of the worship of the heathen.")
10. But the savage populace were not content with this; but having mutilated their bodies, put them on camels and conveyed them to the shore, where they burnt them and threw the ashes into the sea; fearing, as they exclaimed, lest their remains should be collected and a temple raised over them, as the relics of men who, being urged to forsake their religion, had preferred to endure torturing punishments even to a glorious death*, and so, by keeping their faith inviolate, earning the appellation of martyrs. In truth the wretched men who underwent such cruel punishment might have been protected by the aid of the Christians, if both parties had not been equally exasperated by hatred of George.

It's claimed that:
"... who started the blood sheed in Mecca 500 years before the Crusades? Who destroyed most of the Arab Jews and Christians from 600-1000 AD? Was this some Crusade I am not aware of? Please read your histroy my brother before falling into the propaganda of the radical Right, I know you are not one to fall easy for smooth talk but being politically correct will help us become like Iraq. Do you know while Suddam Hussein was in office we had over 1.3 Milliion Christians in Iraq? Why is there less than 250,000 now and why have 70 percent of the churches been blown up or abandoned? In Syria they are killing off Christians who were living their for centuries, is this the peaceful Islam we are told is here? Please don't let the revisionist historians force you into thinking the Crusades did not have a purpose, the Jews and Christians were being slaughtered by the Muslims."
Please, ÁrbolesdeArabia, would you like to quote your sources for your assertions that Muslim Rulers severely and generally, persecuted Christians (and Jews) prior to the Crusade era? I have no doubt that bloodshed occurred at times, but was it religous or political?
Let me make my own position clear beyond doubt, I do not want to live in a world dominated by the Allah concept of Muslims. (Nor, for the record do I want to live in a world dominated by Yahweh, and his support act of fanatical elders).
But, my understanding of Muslim-Christian relationships prior to 1000 CE, is not the same as yours (as expressed). Nonetheless, you may have better sources than I do, hence I invite you to post them.
I also have no doubt that the present relationship is bad, but lets take the early period first if you don't mind.

Thoughts on Harry Mac's comments re China;
China has a Muslim population of approximately 2 million, though some estimates place the figure around 5,000,000. In some places, even on the pacific coast, there are significant pockets of Muslims.
In Shanghai, in the past, I used to stay in a small hotel in Zhapu Road in the Hongkou district. (Just across Suzhou Creek, if you know Shanghai).
Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMPhwprUgBM
Zhapu road was known as a 'food street,' that is it was full of food shops and restaurants, most of them seemed to sell muslim food from west China (Xinjiang) and the staff wore Uighyr clothing. My breakfast was usually one of the delicious breads Xinjiang style breads. ( Its all changed now as the clearance of the old continues)
Since all town residents are subject to the 'one-child' policy (generally, farmers are not) there does not seem much possibility that China will have the problem that Europe is now experiencing.
In point of fact, China's experience with Islam goes back to Islam's beginning. The Great Mosque of Xian, may date back to the early years.
And the Huaisheng, Mosque in Gangzhou may be even older. Arabs had been involved in maritime trade with China's south even before the coming of Islam, wehich may support that tradition.
Many famous people in Chinese history have been Muslim. One in particular is the famous navigator, Zheng He, whose fleet of enormous ships was spreading Chinese influence in the fifteenth Century.
China, may therefore be an example of peaceful co-existence between Muslims and non-Muslims.

North Korean Refugees in South Korea- Film, "Journal of Musan."
by fulltimestudent inthis week i'm attending a showing of a sk movie, the journal of musan, at the south korean consulate in sydney.. before i explain more, i want to say that in general, the south korean government, has many programs in place to assist refugees fleeing nk.
however, often it seems, these refugees run into a wall of prejudice in south korea.. this film presents the experience of a defector.
it graphically shows the complexity of the situation, particularly (i guess)) if the refugee had been a 'true believer' in socialism.. here's a summary of the story (from wikipedia): .

Saw the film last night, along with a fellow student from my Sydney U class. We both found it emotionally draining.
( Seung Cheul dressed as a defector- would you give him a job?)
At a basic level its theme is survival. The defector, Seung Cheul, ran away from NK, because he and his friend had a fight over food, and during the fight he kills his friend. That's when he decides to make a run for it.
But, in the big city jungle of Seoul SK, its not much different. Without the skills required for life in the contemporary work place, he has to settle for work putting up posters in the streets of Seoul. And, he's not exactly a success at that.
As the Director develops the story, life is just as difficult living on the fringe of a capitalist society. Gang members harass Seung Cheul. His boss sacks him from the poster-pasting job and refuses to pay him.
The Director's attitude is interesting. Some of the NK refugees live by stealing. Seung Cheul doesn't want to take the stolen food and clothes. Is he naive? Is he too innocent? Or, is the Director saying that he had learnt to be honest and now found it hard to be dishonest.
A white puppy is introduced into the story-line. Perhaps it Seung Cheul's only friend? But Dr Petrov who introduced the film says he has talked to the Director about the symbolism of the dog, and the Director says he meant it to represent Seung Cheul's innocence.
Its only when Seung Cheul "adapts" to South Korean society, and steals a great deal of money, which enables him to buy new clothes and "look" western and is thus enabled to 'fit in.' And, at the moment of his success - the dog runs on the road and is killed by a car. Innocence is dead.
Is the Director being very cynical? Survival depends on adaption. OK, I must agree. But, must I lose my innocence to 'fit' into a capitalist society,*** and adapt to it? Is the Directors message simply that life can be a bugger?
If you get the chance, see this film. It's bleak and wrenches at the gut and the heart. But, if you are trying to understand the problem of two Koreas, each representing one of the two systems of the 20th century, it may speak to you.
*** please don't get me wrong. I've managed some factories and that experience taught me that many people simply do not want to work very hard, I therefore concluded that in a communist society, they would not work either and therefore 'communism' does not work and will not work.
