There is a book of excerpts from Jewish and Christian apocryphal writings called "The Other Bible." Although it doesn't contain the writings in their entirety, it would give you a working list to go look up.

Am only now discovering/reading the Apocrypha
by Muddy Waters ini was never a born-in jw, got baptized when i was 20 after being raised and belonging to a denomination of a protestant church.
so i never even knew that there was a "catholic" bible or extra bible books (the authenticity of their belonging in the canon or not is a debatable issue, and one i certainly have no answers about it!).
i knew through my study with jws that there were some "extra" books written, but since i believed everything the wt said hook, line, and sinker, i just went along with their explanation that they were not part of the bible canon.

Evil Spirits
by LizLA indoes anyone on this forum have knowledge about casting out demons or evil spirits?
there's at least two of them that have been harrasing me even before i was a jw.
i recently attended a deliverance church to find some help but it was apparent that the holy spirit was missing from that church.

Are you willing to offer an introductory lesson on the language you speak?

JW Cable TV Installer Counts His Time.. Home owner very pissed off !
by Hairyhegoat inthe directv guy came by today to install our new dvr.
a pretty simple install as i already installed the telephone line, and the amp/switch box is about 5 feet below where the extra line needs to run.. .
so all the installer needs to do is give us the new dvr receiver, run one coax line, plug it all in and leave.. .

I wonder if he'd cry religious persecution if the company told him to stop that behavior.

Regarding My Book of Bible Stories, I appreciated how a guy on YouTube pointed out that in the parting of the Red Sea picture, the Israelites are smiling happily as they look at the soldiers drowning in the water. He pointed out that this is not a good message to convey to children, and that if he were in the Red Sea situation, he would be horrified, scared, and relieved, but not smiling. This reminded me of the Armageddon pictures where the Jehovah's Witnesses are smiling happily as they walk away from all the other people getting killed. Something seems wrong with the smiles in the pictures. I would not use that material to teach children.

Hi DylanBeam, I am what the JW's call an "Interested One." This means I got together with a JW to discuss their beliefs and went to their meetings. You asked how to study the JW publications. In my case, when I would read a JW publication, I made sure to do my fact-checking and compare the publication with outside material on the same subject. I wanted to get all sides of the story, so I read everything I could get my hands on. As far as recommending a specific publication, I would need to know a little more about where you are in this journey.
Here is something to keep in mind: If you go so far as to get baptized as a JW, and then later change your mind and decide you no longer wish to be one, they will do what they call "disfellowshipping" to you. This means all JW's, including your grandmother, will be required to stop speaking with you except for "necessary business."
I enjoyed Raymond Franz' book. He was a member of the small group of men, called the Governing Body, who lead the JW organization. His book, as mentioned by another poster is called "Crisis of Conscience." It's available as a pdf online.

And I'm not trying to build a theory.
If that is the case, just to be clear, you are decidedly -not- applying the scientific method.
Which would be what?
Information about the scientific method is readily available online. It involves concepts such as hypothesis, falsifiability, theory, etc. If you refuse to apply these concepts to the subject under discussion, I'm just stating up front that you are not applying the scientific method.
As for science, there is nothing in science that I can see that contradicts His teachings, and some things that support it. (more to come, I believe) Matter can transform to energy (and I assume vice versa, if according to Einsteins theory, there is the same amount of matter/energy in the universe at all times... just in different forms). Standing wave theory supports the possibility of this transformation or rather, our perception of solid matter. (putting on and taking off the flesh) Many accept the possibility of other (intelligent) life/beings in the universe(s), even other dimensions - which might be another form of energy or beings.
Is that more along the lines of what you're thinking?
I'm sure those ideas are interesting and relevant, but I was not so much thinking about listing various things that sound "scientific" as I was about actually applying the scientific method in the discussion.
It isn't that I refuse to speak in scientific manner, but I am not a scientist, so I don't have the knowledge and I don't know all the rules.
Having a scientific conversation involves developing a better understanding of the rules if one doesn't know them. I've barely scratched the surface myself, and I'm sure most of us here are still learning. On the other hand, if you refuse to even attempt to learn the rules and apply them, you are choosing -not- to communicate using the scientific protocol. If that is your choice, I was asking what your alternate protocol is for communicating what you mean by "spirit."

If that is the case, just to be clear, you are decidedly -not- applying the scientific method. With that one sentence, you are refusing to have a scientific conversation about what you mean by the word "spirit." Do you have another protocol by which you prefer to communicate on the subject of "spirit?" Are you able to articulate the rules of your protocol? You started saying that spirit might be energy, but energy has a certain meaning in a scientific context, which puts you in a scientific conversation that you refuse to engage in -- since you are not trying to build a theory. How then do you propose to communicate your meaning of "spirit" if not scientifically?
