The Bible designed to stagnate people and ruin lives
by WTWizard inand i mean the whole bible, from start to finish.. first, the fear factor.
many that are deeply into the bible are afraid that, if they quit or disagree with it, they are going to suffer forever (destruction or hell).
they are also promised a major reward (life on earth forever, or heaven) if they obey.

this speech is shocking.
13 whereas some in the first century murmured against appointed servants, others were murmurers against jesus teachings.

assuming you run firefox, you need a few extensions for surfing today's internet..
1) adblock - pretty crucial
2) noscript - gives you control over what scripts your browser runs
3) ghostery - control over what 'ad' bugs are allowed on your PC
4) cookie monster - gives precise control over what cookies are allowed on your PC.
All are very useful and needed!

@EntirelyPossible: Pretty much a catch-all Scriptural reason to explain why God does what God does is Romans 9:17-24 (ESV):
17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, "For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth."
18 So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills.
19 You will say to me then, "Why does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?"
20 But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, "Why have you made me like this?"
21 Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use?
22 What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction,
23 in order to make known the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory--
24 even us whom he has called, not from the Jews only but also from the Gentiles?
(Rom 9:17-24 ESV)Basically, anything God does is to show his power and to declare that he is God. The standard of morality that is showed is determined to be moral simply because God say it is moral. If you disagree, who are you? You are nothing. NOTHING. God will do what God will do.

@tec: Right from the 10 commandents.
Exodus 20:5,6 (ESV):
"You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments."

@mP: obviously, you haven't read the account of David and Bathsheba's baby lately (or at all). Let me quote it for you, because it's pretty clear who was responsible for the death of the baby :
2 Sam 12:14,15 (ESV):
"Nevertheless, because by this deed you have utterly scorned the LORD, the child who is born to you shall die. Then Nathan went to his house. And the LORD afflicted the child that Uriah’s wife bore to David, and he became sick." Other translations have it that God 'struck' the baby with an illness of some sort.
Now, this is the account that first greatly disturbed me and caused me to leave the JW's.
My question is this : if we were created initially as perfectly in God's image, and with all that entails, a sense of justice, love, mercy, a conscience etc etc, why does reading of this account and others like it disturb us so much? Why wouldn't we, by and large, go along with the account and deem God's actions as justified or moral? Why is our morality seemingly on a different level?
