LOL, well Ding, somethings are best not being vocal about. Like, what you plan to do when entering the washroom...like, what you plan to do with that kleenex when you pull it out of your pocket. I'm sure the silent approach works well, in this.

I thought it was a sacrifice of lips...a voluntary offering.
I do see how it has been spun to read as a commandment in the publications. But the scriptures says that we are commanded to love one another, but when that law is broken we are not under threat of punishment. I guess that is why the inactive are not punished.

Heard something strange last week. A speaker in the congregation said that you must preach. He stated that this is a commandment.
I was wondering, if the Society has ever printed it that way. I have heard that it was a voluntary sacrifice. Has anyone ever read it from the publications that way?

Is shunning scriptural? At all?
by Open mind init's obvious that the jw view of shunning goes way beyond anything called for in the bible.
1 cor 5:11-13 says,(nwt) "but now i am writing you to quit mixing in company with anyone called a brother that is a fornicator or a greedy person or an idolater or a reviler or a drunkard or an extortioner, not even eating with such a man.
for what do i have to do with judging those outside?

I tried to paste this before, hope it works this time. If it does, this is my first successful paste on this site.
The following are the UN's comments on intolerance. They are bang on when they recognize Religion as being intolerant especially with this shunning application.
- Fighting intolerance requires law:
Each Government is responsible for enforcing human rights laws, for banning and punishing hate crimes and discrimination against minorities, whether these are committed by State officials, private organizations or individuals. The State must also ensure equal access to courts, human rights commissioners or ombudsmen, so that people do not take justice into their own hands and resort to violence to settle their disputes. - Fighting intolerance requires education:
Laws are necessary but not sufficient for countering intolerance in individual attitudes. Intolerance is very often rooted in ignorance and fear: fear of the unknown, of the other, other cultures, nations, religions. Intolerance is also closely linked to an exaggerated sense of self-worth and pride, whether personal, national or religious. These notions are taught and learned at an early age. Therefore, greater emphasis needs to be placed on educating more and better. Greater efforts need to be made to teach children about tolerance and human rights, about other ways of life. Children should be encouraged at home and in school to be open-minded and curious.
Education is a life-long experience and does not begin or end in school. Endeavours to build tolerance through education will not succeed unless they reach all age groups, and take place everywhere: at home, in schools, in the workplace, in law-enforcement and legal training, and not least in entertainment and on the information highways. - Fighting intolerance requires access to information:
Intolerance is most dangerous when it is exploited to fulfil the political and territorial ambitions of an individual or groups of individuals. Hatemongers often begin by identifying the public's tolerance threshold. They then develop fallacious arguments, lie with statistics and manipulate public opinion with misinformation and prejudice. The most efficient way to limit the influence of hatemongers is to develop policies that generate and promote press freedom and press pluralism, in order to allow the public to differentiate between facts and opinions. - Fighting intolerance requires individual awareness:
Intolerance in a society is the sum-total of the intolerance of its individual members. Bigotry, stereotyping, stigmatizing, insults and racial jokes are examples of individual expressions of intolerance to which some people are subjected daily. Intolerance breeds intolerance. It leaves its victims in pursuit of revenge. In order to fight intolerance individuals should become aware of the link between their behavior and the vicious cycle of mistrust and violence in society. Each one of us should begin by asking: am I a tolerant person? Do I stereotype people? Do I reject those who are different from me? Do I blame my problems on 'them'? - Fighting intolerance requires local solutions:
Many people know that tomorrow's problems will be increasingly global but few realize that solutions to global problems are mainly local, even individual. When confronted with an escalation of intolerance around us, we must not wait for governments and institutions to act alone. We are all part of the solution. We should not feel powerless for we actually posses an enormous capacity to wield power. Nonviolent action is a way of using that power-the power of people. The tools of nonviolent action-putting a group together to confront a problem, to organize a grassroots network, to demonstrate solidarity with victims of intolerance, to discredit hateful propaganda-are available to all those who want to put an end to intolerance, violence and hatred.

I remember that the GB around the late 80's printed in the WT, that Advanced Education was OK, as long as you pursued it with plans to be a full-time minister (pioneer).
This backfired on the GB. Then the GB took the words back. Gradually it came out in talks, and subtle points in the articles.
Now, it's very serious and affects the Parents position/standing in the congregation.
Bottom line....Pioneering is dying, Missionary service is dying. The ORG is opening up this service to Retirees, who have worked and can financially support themselves in this work.

In Canada, most hospitals, and schools that have Religious affiliations, are managed by the Government. That changed in the late 70's.
So it wouldn't be looked down upon. Just be careful about that higher learning, eh

Ridiculous elder ideas and rules
by Juan Viejo2 inin an earlier thread, i went off topic for a moment to share excerpts from an email i received from an active sister living in the midwest usa.
she mentioned that the elders in her congregations were extremely conservative and criticized the flock for using certain colors of highlighters in their magazines.
she also reported that they were all over the sisters for wearing stylish boots or tennis shoes during the winter months.. i know that some elder groups can be very liberal, supportive and loving toward their flocks - while others are exactly opposite to the point that they become overbearing and oppressive.. what have you experienced as far as ridiculous, over-the-top rules and ideas enforced by local elders?.

Yes, JT, I can relate to that one. We visited a congregation and sat on the right side of the aisle. We were told that because this cong was small, we should sit in the middle. We just said that our cong is big so we will follow the big cong rules.
It is crazy that rules are enforced and they act as if it is scriptural.

WT Society Appoints Elders/MS Based on " Functions " Performed - not ....
by flipper in........... holy spirit or any " fruitages of the spirit " like love, kindness, mildness, meekness , etc.
shown by men considered for elder or ms positions.
qualities or true positive character traits are not that important to the wt society in appointments of these men in jw congregations.. no, the real " qualifications " that a jw man needs to exhibit is being able to report 10 hours a month in knocking on people's doors offering wt and awake magazines !

Well, I must say that I agree that the qualifications for a Spiritual Man (Elder, or Shepherd) in the congregation today is far from being spiritual.
What I see is those outward functions ...microphone carrying, magazine/literature counter work, Sound department, commenting etc. The 10 hrs per month seems to be mandatory.
The cong servants that I grew up to respect in my early years, and I am going back over 40 yrs. are very different than the ones today. Going back those years were men that I grew to respect, and made me want to reach out. However, they are not serving any longer, and neither am I. Today, the men serving are pitiful. Mind you not all of them, but, the younger ones today are so pitiful. I see such men abusive with their children, and wive's. I see them displaying anger, and they are so far from being Christlike.
I woud describe those men like Auditors. Company men that ensure that the policies, rules and regulations are practiced. Many in the congregation remain respectful of this arrangement, but, cringe at the thought of approaching such men with problems.
Will this change? Not with the GB Methodology. They want to see publishers out of this organization, not real men, and women dealing with the problems of real life.
