  If the Governing Body Told You They Love You All Very Much, What Would Your Reply Be?

  in a letter in the 2013 yearbook of jehovah's witnesses, the governing body sign off with the words, "we love you all very much".

  these words were later echoed by one of the governing body in an address to french jehovah's witnesses in july this year.

  these words sound so marvellously compelling and heartfelt - goosebump inducing, even.. imagine the governing body wrote these words to you or expressed them to you in person- yes to you reading these very words.

  years ago, when i was studying with the witnesses, my bible studty conductor's sister in ohio died.

  of cancer as i recall.

  so he flew back to ohio ( from san diego ) to be with his family .

  I also remember well how for every natural disaster, my Jw family member (me included) would wonder if there were any JWs hurt or among the fatalities. Case in point, the 2004 tsunami in Asia...our first thought was "I hope no witnesses were hurt, no KH destroyed"...

  Similar thoughts about the Katrina hurricane and other disasters...I feel so ashamed of our coldness and utter lack of empathy and human compassion.

  Contradictory geneology of Jesus

  so i'm reading another carl sagan book and he seems to invariably find a way to slam j-dubs in each one.

  (i can't say i blame him.).

  anyway, in this one he discusses the fact that the gospels give contradictory geneologies of jesus--differing lines back to david from joseph, and a different number of generations.

  Regarding the 2 genealogies of Jesus, the ESV study bible says that most probably Matthew missed or skipped some generations for example 3 generations between Uzziah and Jotham, and he structured the genealogy in sets of 14 for ease of memorization, or literary or symbolic symmetry. It mentions that according to the Jewish practice of 'gematria' the giving of a numeric value to the consonants in a word, David's name would add to D + V + D or 4 + 6 + 4 = 14, and David is the 14th name on the list.

  As for the genealogy of Luke vs. that of Matthew, it says that few comentators today believe that they trace Mary's vs. Joseph's ancestry...so it seems they both refer to Joseph's. Matthew focuses on the royal succession, Luke brings out the actual physical descent.

  Regarding the 2 different people named as Joseph's father (Jacob in Matthew, Heli in Luke), most scholars believe they are 2 different people. One solution is that there was a second levirate marriage, so Joseph was physical son of one and the legal son of the other, so there are 2 lines of ancestry...the 2 men didn't have to be brothers but relatives.

  Another solution is that Heli was Mary's father, but there were no male heirs in the family so Heli adopted Joseph as his "son" when Mary and Joseph married (similar cases 1 Chron 2:34-35, Ezra 2:61, Neh 7:63)

  Before anyone dismisses these solutions, I'm pointing out that the OP asked about any thoughts and I think these among others might be plausible explanations.

  I took the test 2 different times and am also a INFJ, which is supposed to be 1-2% of the population.

  Nice to see a few on the forum are also fellow INFJ's. It's a unique personality :)

  i've been thinking about how the gb controls jws through the use of short phrases or scripture quotes (often partial quotes ripped out of context).. think of the sound-bite responses you know jws are going to give you in response to points you try to make to them.. ones that come to my mind immediately are:.

  -- "the light gets brighter and brighter.".

  -- "who, then, is the faithful and discreet slave?".

  yesterday evening my wife and i were invited to friends house for new year's eve.

  we met them when i was a christian and we have kept in touch.

  they had a few other friends there as well, including the new church pastor and his wife.

  i don't mean to derail this thread any further...can a banned person still read/follow what's posted here?

  i'm also wondering if one can get some type of previous warning before getting banned, either public or by private PM...like in school, detention, suspension, and last expulsion...even the WT has public/private reproof, and then df'ing.

  just a thought...

  As for the topic, i consider myself a theist and catastrophes whether they be natural or man-made, diseases and all sorts of hardship are a challenge to my faith and i'm sure to many believers worldwide (probably not just Christians). i have no idea why God didn't intervene in this particular instance, as i also wonder why He doesn't intervene in many other conflicts/disasters ...near me (illness of a loved one) or far away (war somewhere, children starving, etc.)

  i also feel it's redundant or almost vain to pray for personal trivial matters, so i rather pray for greater problems such as these...the problem of evil is not addressed adequately, the WT tried with the "sovereignty issue, man's answer to Satan's taunts, etc" but we all know how empty that reasoning was. For the present time, i guess the best theist answer would be "i don't know// our knowledge of all things is limited"

  how to find out when and where the scheduled district conventions are without going to the kh and looking at the letter?

  while im fading, id prefer to remain 'in the loop' to some extent so when the still in family asks when 'ours' is i have an answer.

  is it posted anywhere online??

  the jws have their own collection built up over many years, part of their own unique worldwide jw culture.

  i've come across the same ones in america that i've heard in australia, and they pass from legend to myth and finally reality as quoted from the platform.

  This story was related by a "reputable" pioneer in my ex-congo who somehow had heard/knew of the people involved firsthand.

  Two JW guys go out in service one day. At one of the doors apparently doing territory, a man comes out armed with a gun and shoots one of the JWs who dies.

  The man is arrested and interrogated. Eventually he's put in prison. During the court hearings he relates that he commited the murder because he heard a voice commanding him to do exactly that. The murdered man's father was present during this confession and he being a JW is determined to explain to his son's murderer where the voices came from. He visits him in prison and tells him about the origin of the voices...demons :) A study is started with the man and eventually after serving the sentence he's released. (insanity plea??)

  But there's more... This man becomes a regular pioneer but instead of serving 70 hrs (or 90?) he does double the amount of service. When asked why he said that he took the life of a pioneer and now is making up for his lost service...

  It's been a long time I haven't posted on jwn. But I find this news just great!

  Congrats to the group of 7/8? (and many more to follow) for this initiative and I wish you much success!

  Also there is no 'ex/JW" group in my part of the world, so I already filled in the volunteer form to get involved in any way in raising awareness about the harmful effects of the WT.
