Has anyone ever had a 'Near Death Experience' ?
by 3Mozzies ini'm wondering if anyone here has had a "near death experience" or know of someone that has.
as an example: such as floating above your body during your operation when the doctors 'lose' you and you make a decision to return back to your body even though the bright light and some voice tell you otherwise... .
did it change you/them in anyway?.

Interestingly, when Christians have near death experiences, they usually see Jesus or Mary.
When Muslims have near death experiences they tend to see Allah, or important spirits from the quaran.
When Hindus have near death experiences they tend to see Krishna or symbolic images from their religion.
If everyone all had the same near death experience regardless of their beliefs or religion beforehand, I might be slightly inclined to take the drug blurred ramblings of a dying brain a tiny bit more seriously.
But I wouldn't believe what they saw was real if they were totally awake and healthy at the time, let alone when their mind is at its weakest.
And to answer the question: No I've never had a near death experience. But I did fall out of a tall tree and almost die. And I once dreamt about being in the new system which felt real while I was asleep. . . I just didn't do them both at the same time.

by CyrusThePersian inhere we are at the close of 2010. since i have many family members who are still jehovah's witnesses, and who still believe that the end of the world is coming any minute now, i thought i would post a little list of events, a timetable if you will, of some end-time prophesies and how long ago they were.. .
around 1,980 years ago jesus promised,"...this generation will by no means pass away until all these things occur.
also around the same time jesus said," truly i say to you that there are some of those standing here that will not taste death at all until first they see the son of man coming in his kingdom.

But wait, you missed Zephaniah around 600BC
So Around 2,600 years ago Zephaniah promised: "Near is the great day of the LORD, Near and coming very quickly; Listen, the day of the LORD! . . . "-Zephaniah 1:14

I believe fokyc is reffering to the typo: "qualiftcations" is spelled "qualifications"
This mistake is actually likely to be a result of the image to text conversion done in the PDF mistaking an i for a t.
Not sure what bearing that has on the meaning but apparently it nullifies everything you said.
You know, just like a single scribal error in the bible would nullify the whole book.

On the day you eat...
by PSacramento insince it has been brought up a few time, i though it cool to post this interpretation of this part of genesis 2:.
http://biologos.org/blog/genesis-creation-and-ancient-interpreters-on-the-day-you-eat-of-it/.
one issue that occupied the attention of many early interpreters is found in genesis 2:16-17, where god warns not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for on the day you eat of it you shall die.. the problem is well known: adam (and eve) did eat of the fruit, but they did not die on that day.

So did Yahweh TELL Adam that when he says: "Day" He could mean any random number incuding: 24 hours, a week, a year, 1000 year, a 'period of time' possibly billions of years.
If he told Adam that, then how come he didn't just say: "For in the Millenium that you eat from it" Or: "If you eat it, you'll eventually die." ?
Maybe if the 1000 years = 1 day rule had been mentioned in the Genesis story it wouldn't seem like such a pathetic excuse.
But whether it's Paul changing definitions 4000 years later, or you personally doing it 6000 years later. It's still just some random guy trying to make excuses for the obvious problems in the bible.
Am I allowed to retroactively redefine words to make myself truthful?
Me: "I'll give you 100 dollars in under 20 minutes."
34 years later
Me: "Well when I said '20 minutes' I actually meant '20 years'. And when I said 'dollars' I actually meant 'germs'. And when I said '100' I actually meant 'influenza'.
Remember 14 years ago when I gave you the flu? Yeah that was me fulfilling my promise!"And yet, somehow you find that to be an acceptible way to 'resolve' the problem when god does it. . .

Inconsistant loss of 'privileges'
by Lore ingotta love how giving talks, mowing the lawn, plowing the parking lot, adjusting microphones and counting the money are all considered 'privileges'.. but if you just stop answering questions.
bam no more giving talks, handling mics, or definately counting money.. but no matter what you do.
you will never loose the 'privilege' of mowing the kingdom hall lawn.

In those times, an unmarried woman had few prospects but misery and starvation.
Yup, if only they had some kind of omnipotent leader to provide for them. Or some wise and loving god who could teach them that they are able to take care of themselves. . . Shame they didn't have that.
It was a male dominated society, not very different from what the middle east looks like today.
Yeah, if only they had some kind of just leader who could set laws that weren't biased. Or some powerful god who could smite the crap out of abusive males. . . Shame they didn't have that.
A violated virgin was "damaged goods" on the marriage market and would never be able to have a husband support her.
Yeah, if only they weren't subject to bronze-age superstitions and had a wise leader who could convince them that just because someone has a broken hymen they are not magically poisoned, infertile, unlovable or useless. Or some enlightened god who could make laws just so that women had the rights needed to survive without a husband. . . Shame they didn't have that either.
For the violator to be forced to marry her without possibility of divorce was in order to guarantee her for her economic loss.
If only they had been taught by their loving leader to have compassion for one another, maybe they would have had a system to provide for rape victims that didn't involve enslaving them to a rapist for the rest of their lives. Or some god who could prevent rape from uccuring in the first place. . . Shame they didn't have that
If the god of the bible weren't so darned useless we wouldn't be having this discussion would we?

Father of the Lie

"Leo may be able to shed a light on that, but I THINK that the way it works in Hebrew is that "very day" referres to the day they EAT not that on that day they die.
In other words, on the day they eat of the food, their life as they know it ( life for all intents and purposes) will be over."OK.
But then while we're twisting what people say to make it seem more truthful why don't we assume that Satan was ALSO being all figurative and evasive.
When he said they wouldn't die, he meant that they would 'live on' in our memories and be remembered forever.
The fact that we are still talking about them right now proves how truthful Satan was.
They are 'immortalized' in history.
Hey if you can do it for god I can do it for satan!

I don't think this verse describes an immediate death.
Try some other translation. . . for example: Every other translation on the planet. http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis+2%3A17&version=ESV
You will find that it says: "In the day that you eat from it" (Or 'in the very day' or 'on that day')
Now if someone sets out a bowl of fruit salad in front of me and says: "Careful that fruit salad is poisoned or cursed or something, and if you eat it, you will die within a day!"
And another guy says: "Nuh uh, you won't die from it. But it does taste pretty darn good. And it'll help you poo."
I then eat it, it tastes swell, have a great BM, and then live on for another 900 years or so. . . guess which guy I'm gonna call the liar.
Even if the first guy shoots me in the head 900 hundred years later, that doesn't meen the second guy lied.
And since god never mentioned that they'd live forever if they DIDNT eat it, how do you know they wouldn't have died 900 years later anyway, or even a week later? (And since we are questioning Yahwehs honesty here, even if he DID say they'd live forever otherwise, that doesn't mean he was telling the truth.)

Sure, when he challenged God and said that man would not serve him if you touch his flesh...Job 2: 4
Would you call that a 'lie' or a 'mistake'?
That's no more a lie than if someone asks where Bob is and I say: "In the garage" thinking it to be true and it turns out he was in the basement.
If he ACTUALLY believed that Job would turn against god then he wasn't lying, he was simply wrong.
And if he didn't actually believe it he probably wouldn't have made the bet in the first place.
